I read a lot of books of design and visual communication. Often, they prove either overly academic and textual without enough actual visual examples or they end up being just a yearbook of pretty designs.Connie Malamed's Visual Language for Designers is a remarkable and well-researched book that not only lays out the principles and techniques of how designers communicate with graphics, but includes hundreds of excellent examples from a wide variety of international designers. And refreshingly, there is not a single negative example: Bucking the current trend of writers pontificating about what NOT to do (and often showing BADLY designed examples), all of the included graphics are successful examples of the specific design principles discussed.The book functions on many levels--from beautiful coffee table book to scientific study to design textbook. As such, it should appeal to numerous audiences. The only caution I would give is to those looking for a step by step "how to be a graphic designer" reference. This isn't it. Connie does address basic (and advanced) design principles, but does so through scientific and cognitive lenses. Therefore, when discussing "eye gaze," she doesn't stop at simply saying that one should generally have the eyes of a photo subject look inward on a page. She goes further, referencing "neuropsychological" and "neurophysiological" theories, and then through multiple visual examples shows how to employ this principle to very different ends. Though very accessible and readable, it is still a sophisticated book for a sophisticated audience.Just as with any form of art, it can often be a mystery as to just why a graphic design succeeds or fails. Connie breaks down much of the mystery to show that there is actually a visual language and there are concrete techniques used by designers to communicate effectively--even though I am sure she would agree that designers are not always conscious of their use of this language.After an introduction of how we process visual information, Connie divides the book into 6 principles:* Organize for Perception* Direct the Eyes* Reduce Realism* Make the Abstract Concrete* Clarify Complexity* Charge it UpEach section examines the science of the principle, then discusses how to apply it in practice through various techniques. And on every page the reader is given multiple relevant examples--each one getting its own straightforward description.If you're a graphic designer or the kind of person interested in visual communications or one of those people with the suite of Edward Tufte books on their desk, you need to add Visual Language for Designers to your collection.

This is the best book on meaningful design that I have ever encountered. It's well-written, clear, and packed with a wide variety of examples of thoughtful and powerful design.Graphic designers have the power to make sense of information in ways that transcends language, and Malamed shows them how to do it right.Malamed's approach to the subject is uniquely holistic. She successfully guides readers through fundamental design principles, deep research into cognition, and further research into human emotion. I've never encountered a book that even attempts to juggle all of these important concepts.What's particularly new and useful is the attention given to emotional design. Many information designers scoff at design flourishes as being distracting or unnecessary "fluff" or "junk." Malamed teaches designers to recognize the power of artistry in making designs more eye-catching, more memorable, and more emotionally resonant. There's no need to eschew beauty when it can be a powerful teaching tool.As we continue to be inundated by data and information, I can only hope that more designers pick up and read this excellent book. This is one of the best books around on applying (perceptual/cognitive/research) psychological principals to graphics and visualizations. This book really stands out for three reasons, it's concise (but not overly brief) discussion of relevant psychology (memory/cognition/perception) plus the incredible examples for graphic designers and the set of references. The closest competitors are books by Few Now You See It: Simple Visualization Techniques for Quantitative Analysis (which covers similar psych issues but is horribly wordy) or Information Dashboard Design: The Effective Visual Communication of Data (which reads well but focuses more on clean scientific graphs) or the famous books by Tufte . Relative to other books, this one has a great deal more information on how to integrate art with information. After the book you will see graphics and think about how a designer could have done a better job in guiding the reader's eye to the intended information in a poster or how to design a better handout showing a process like how part of the body works or how to put together a complicated device. The graphics in the book REALLY stand out and support the authors writing. As a researcher I hate to see people state "facts" or "hypotheses" about how people think without providing supporting evidence. This book has a very respectable set of references. So, rather than pontificating about the "right" way to do graphics there are references to relevant (experimental psych) articles.Basically, this book is the complete package. It could be a great coffee table book or on a shelf in a scientific library.

First, this book is gorgeous. Your eyes will feast on the many, full-color, high-quality images from designers all over the world. But more important, the examples are organized into principles that will help you create graphics that help people understand what you are saying and remember your message as well. I go back to this book regularly and always learn something new.

After graduating from Tufts University with a double major in Biology and French, Lisa completed her Ph.D. in molecular and developmental biology at MIT. She has published a number of research papers, most of them focused on gene expression during embryonic and larval development in sea urchins. Lisa is also deeply committed to promoting opportunities for women in science education and research.   Michael L. Cain Michael Cain (Units 4 and 5) is an ecologist and evolutionary biologist who is now writing full time. Not enough problems to help understand material. Not enough examples throughout chapters. Talks about A but the example shows B which wasn't helpful at times.

First of all, why are all of these reviews based on the service of the item? A customer review is supposed to be based SOLELY on the product itself, not its condition, not the seller, not the rental service. Amazon's review guidelines clearly state that "feedback about the seller, your shipment experience, or packaging is not a product review and should" not be a part of your product review. There are other venues for that. Here is a review on the content of the book.My interest | 5 stars: I love, love science. Any textbook based on science is something interesting to me. More specifically, I am deeply interested in anatomy and biology. I have bought many books pertaining to science, mostly for required college classes. This one was also bought for a college class.Engaging | 4 stars: The book is definitely engaging. The cover is beautiful, I enjoyed looking at the picture of a cute animal! The pictures and diagrams within the book are also engaging, and help with further understanding of the material.Ease of understanding | 5 stars: I found the book easy to understand. The titles, subheadings, diagrams, pictures, and general body of the book were easy to understand and made the intimidating facts much clearer.Index | 5 stars: I find the index, table of contents, and glossary very important features of any textbook. If I come across a difficult term, I refer to these areas of the book. If I need to study for a test, I refer to those areas. This book is great and contains all of those parts, making it easy to study from.

I had to buy this for my son's AP class and I'm sure the book itself is good. I DO NOT however, recommend renting the book. They would only let me rent it for 6 months initially and indicated at the time that I would be able to extend the rental when it expired (since I needed it for 9 months). However, when it came time to renew, they claimed that the publisher wouldn't let me extend the rental and that I now had to BUY the book. If I had known that in the beginning, I would have bought a hard copy so that I could resell it. Now I am stuck with a $100+ ebook that we won't need in three months and can't sell. I'm mad that this was not stated up front and am growing increasingly torqued at Amazon as these types of things seem to be happening more and more. Just buy the book outright and get at least some of your money back at the end. The Kindle version is a rip off.

Content is 5/5 stars.I've downloaded this textbook on a tablet and a desktop computer. When I try to open the book on a laptop of mine, I receive a dialog that titled 'License Limit Reached' with a message "You have exceeded the limit on the number of devices that can read this item" (see attached screenshot).That is the reason I'm giving this e-Textbook a one-star review. I don't feel its unreasonable to want to read this book on a desktop, laptop, and tablet.

I simply could NOT use the $%%$ eBook, alone. I bought the stupid eBook for class. The $%$$ eBook is NOT set up to easily see to read two pages at a time, especially when a pictorial flow chart spans two pages not just one. This is a loose leaf physical book. With a loose leaf text I can follow two or more pages at a time. I can accurately complete the eBook assignments now with ease. I can bring the one paper chapter at a time to class then return it into the notebook. The eBook also does NOT have a great way of looking up concepts which are two paired words like "independent variable." There are wonderful oral resources and animations with the eBook. But, to see the concepts being explained two clear pages at a time is invaluable to my current almost 100 A in class. I cannot believe that this Pearson company has costed me MORE than $600 for a biology course!! This paper copy of the text book should be included in the price of the %%%$$ eBook.i should have a refund from Pearson for the necessity to have purchased this book!!!A loose leaf book is a great idea. To insert my own loose leaf notes without writing in the margins of the text or attempting to manipulate the $%$# eBook features to put in my own notes is good. I do not have to defile the loose leaf pages with scribbling.To those professors adopting a Biology text, I say emphatically, look at the eBook #$$% again!! One must be able to have an expensive computer to see two pages two at a time, a big computer screen, one which is NOT portable to class. The ability to split screen the text with the assignments is not really very good either. I still have to toggle the two screens. Even with toggling, I could not see an entire concept map at one time, which necessitated more money out for this loose leaf book too. God Pearson!! You are not thoughtful.Yes!!!, the e-study resources are wonderful. Animations, downloadable mp3 topics, ... But, Pearson, you are just plain greedy!!$ You HAD to steal for more than $600 an eBook AND this loose leaf text from my poverty.I sleep on the floor. I have one chair and three changes of clothes only.This book should be included with the eBook.poverty stricken j

I rented this book online after seeing it on a list of recommended study materials for the FTCE Biology 6-12 test. I am a Psychology major who, through a series of events somehow ended up becoming a Science teacher.Science was always my favorite subject in school, Biology in particular was my top favorite. Most of the material I haven't seen since I was in high school. When I found out I had to take the FTCE, I was very nervous! However, whenever I came across any concept I couldn't grasp, I turned to this book (which has EVERYTHING). I just took the FTCE on Saturday, and I passed!! I couldn't have done it without this book. Later on I plan to buy this book just to have it because it's such an amazing book. It's well-written and lays out all the concepts in a way that is easy understand, even for me!I'll be passing the name of this book along to my colleagues.

as a wanna-be oil painter with much to learn, I am enjoying this style of the artist. It offers many suggestions on how to properly use the medium without being repetitive.

As a watercolor painter I needed the basics in the way oils work plus the permission to use color in exciting ways and the boost of confidence that Pollards teaching gives. I am very pleased with this book.

Beautiful book. I love Julie's training but wish she would list colors used. It would save a ton of confusion for beginner's.

Pollard is a good teacher, she demonstrates her innovative and complex color use inspirering me to move past local color in my art.

This is not a novel! It is a well done work on the mythology and history of dragons. It is not done as a D&D kind of book, but a pretty well researched book on dragons. As an artist I was looking for something with useful information and after a long and fruitless search I found it in this book. I highly recommend it!

I'm actually currently writing a novel and this was great for research and references. It was very accurate, and the book itself was printed on nice paper and the covers nice. Although be careful, I got some hot chocolate on the cover and tried to rub it out and some of the color in the cover came off. Regaurdless I'm inlove with this book!

This book is such a wonderful collection to anyone’s library if you love mythical and fantastical beasts.

A modern collection of legends for the investigating jr. scientist

I learned a lot about the myths of dragons that I didn't know before. I especially adored the enthusiasm the author manages to convey in some parts of the text.
