Excellent book! Loads of interesting textile techniques gleaned from working and talking with villagers in the author's home region of Peru.
I am an art teacher, I met the author when I was in Peru. She is a lovey person and the people of her village are beautiful and very talented. I got this book as a reference when I’m teaching weaving.
Nilda has done amazing things for the weaving women of Peru and portrays them with admiration and integrity.
This is definitely a hands-on book, with great detailed photographs and clear explanations giving enough information to really be able to do the techniques being shown. It is also a lot more. Written as a group effort by Nilda Callañaupa, the young weavers of the Center for Traditional Texiles of Cusco, and Sarah Lyon, with the ever-so-able support of the Thrums Books team, I could feel each of them contributing as I read. CTTC has an important history in the Peruvian, and even worldwide, movement to save traditional textile techniques before they are lost to the "progress" that has been mechanizing and maybe de-humanizing the human part of the planet for the past 100 years or more. In nearly all cultures now it is hard to find young people who WANT to learn the techniques, as with more schooling and better opportunities, they have a chance to actually earn a viable living, something nearly impossible to do creating traditional textiles. It IS possible, and CTTC is one of the leaders showing the way. But the struggle is about more than making a living. Textile creating, one of the oldest of human activities, has been a form of cultural expression for thousands of years, is one of the fastest ways to identify where someone comes from, was one of the earliest forms of written expression, with symbols telling stories that were central to a culture. And still are. So while Nilda is telling us how to do a particular technique, she is also telling us why, and what it means. The tubular borders done by the Quechua are one of my favorite parts of their textiles, but this was new to me: "These tubular edgings not only protect the textile from physical wear, preventing fraying and unraveling and hiding the uneven edgings, they also are said to protect the textile spiritually. Most tubular edgings come in some variation of an eye pattern and many weavers explain that these borders watch over or protect the textile from befalling some future harm." Makes me want to put them on everything I ever weave, or bake, or make in any way! And glad I read the book, so I would know that.
Gorgeous photographs, fascinating information about cultural traditions and life in the Peruvian Highlands, and terrific step-by-step for how to spin the Andean way, weave a beginning design, cast-on techniques for knitting hats, and making pompoms and braids. Even if I don't master all the secrets shown, it's great information to have.
What a gem of cultural preservation. A visual feast!

I will start by saying TCF is one of my very favorite podcasts and I got this book to support the author because she puts out great work. My first impression... the book was so small. I buy a lot of books, a lot of Catholic books too, and I was expecting a better value for the price. The content reads like a blog. It’s written very casually... a lot of emphasis on humor but comes across snarky. I like Claire’s message and I love the phrase “catholic feminist.†IMO this book reads for millenials or maybe even tries to hard to appeal to millenials. I have found her podcast presence to be more my fit than the book. I’m just surprised it reads more like a self published e book. At this point, I’m struggling through a book I was very excited to receive. However, I will update my review once I finish it if I change my opinion. I can get behind the message -minus the snark- this one is just not what I expected.
The conversational style and length of this book make it PERFECT to share. I mean, really, I'm a slow reader and read it in a few hours. Mostly because I was devouring it! It elevated my spirit to this place where fires are burning and tears are flowing. In simple language, it cuts to the heart of who Christians are called to be in this day, regardless of denomination, political/social views, or anything else that seems to separate. I could not be more grateful to Claire Swinarski for putting a voice to something many of us feel. I finally feel like I could go to a Women's March one day, and a Pro-Life one the next. I've already bought four copies!
Claire’s definition of feminism is believing that women are endowed with equal dignity as men. While many Catholics scoff at feminism as “man-hating, bra-burning†rebellion, and secular feminists exclude pro-life Catholics from their ranks, Claire declares there’s room at the table for all sorts and that people can’t be boxed up. She shares her personal faith story and outlines her thoughts on what it means to be a Catholic woman. She is a passionate and at times very informal/conversational writer, but digs deep and refuses to be caged by vapid “women’s topics.†I admire her clarity, compassion, commitment, and charity through many difficulty topics. Definitely geared toward Catholic women, but I think can resonate with and challenge others too. I will definitely be reading this more than once over the years because it is packed full of depth and truth bombs. Honestly refreshing and encouraging to read.Service, leadership, women, faith, action, humility, love, courage, Christianity.“Catholic feminists believe in uplifting other women, even those who make us want to roll our eyes. We can’t love only people who agree with us, although wouldn’t that be nice? We have to love the people who don’t agree with us too.â€
As a fan of the podcast, I was excited for this book. It did not disappoint. It reads like you’re sitting across from the author having coffee, but digs into deep issues. The author does a nice job weaving Church teachings into common topics of feminism and social justice. I found practical suggestions for making difference in your community combined with loftier ambitions about changing the world. For me, it struck the perfect tone of loving the neighbor next to you and the one across the world. The author has hit upon numerous themes that are relevant today, and aptly described the tension many Catholic women feel. I have recommended this book to all my friends, and my deepest regret is that it was not longer.
My 29 year old daughter told me about Claire's podcasts. This was the first time that I have ever listened to a Podcast at the ripe old age of 58! Claire is talking about connecting with your Catholic faith in a very fresh and bold way based on scripture. My daughter let me know that this book was coming out and I ordered copies for both of us. I read it in three days! This book reminds me that I can be tuned into matters that support women and live my Catholic faith simultaneously! I also think it is great that my daughter and I will be able to discuss this book that applies to both of us!
This is a book for all seasons and for any woman. Having a similar background to the author (FOCUS missionary, mother of babies, desirous to make disciples in my right now) this book spoke to me and challenged me to pick one thing that God has put on my heart and run with it. Thank you, Claire for these words and putting your heart into this book! All women will benefit from reading this. And it’s extremely quick!
This book spoke to my heart in so many ways and really helped me feel like there's a place for me in the Catholic Church even though often times it doesn't feel that way. Claire does such a great job of sharing her journey of how she integrates feminism into her Catholic faith and how we all can do that too because they really do go hand in hand!
This book takes a real view at struggles that females are faced with in not only the Church but in secular life as well. The author does a great job in explaining how the Catholic Church is truly the most feminist organization in the world.

I haven't tried to make anything from this cookbook yet, but it looks like there are several potential ones to try. I can't seem to get an index or table of contents so I have to page through the whole book to find the recipe I want. There are a lot of typos and you can't always figure out what it is supposed to be, just have to fake it I guess.
This is a perfect size food processor. We store it in a cupboard but it easy to get out whenever we need it for something, even just to grate a bit of cheese. Easy to use and clean as well.
I never heard of most of the foods and ingredients presented let alone wanting to make them
This cookbook is one of the worst written cookbooks I've ordered. Someone didn't catch all of the many type O's I've found. This book is difficult to read because of poor phrasing, the missing information and poor typesetting.
Other Book that I recommended to be part of the culinary library. Well detailed nice pictures and must of all easy to follow. Congratulation to the Author.
Very helpful in making good choices for eating.
Recipes are beyond the norm. Hoped for something more practical. Quite a few spelling errors as well as grammatical. Not very useful to the average home cook.
