We are in 1947, Gamow is explaining us tricky concepts from math, physics, chemistry and biology. Fantastic. Get ready to have some fun because the whole thing is palatable to any curious person. For example, he starts asking "How to count infinities?" matching the book title. This is just the warm-up wrestling with number theory the purest branch of mathematics. Of course he closes the book discussing the "laws of disorder" like brownian motion and the second law of thermodynamics making this book a huge and mysterious mess, just like the universe.
It is great to see that this book is still available after so many years (this book was written way way before 1988 as noted here). It's also a joy to see so many positive comments on the book. This book is a beautiful piece of work on sciences. As said, if you want to have your children into the world of science, try this book, I myself am a testimony.My personal story with this book is very long. It went back to my high school time in 1980's in China. I was a normal kid just like a typical high-school student in China in that era - love to play around but was bound by the endless homework and exams. I was lucky enough for getting good scores in all my science programs without much trouble, but didn't really have much passion on sciences.This book came to me accidentally when I looked into one of my classmate's book collections. By just browsing couple pages, I was totally into it! The book was a translated Chinese version (of course, barely started my English class at that time), and my classmate got it from the library (thank god, we did have libraries after the deadly culture revolution). It may be hard for you to understand what I did at that time: without a copier, I copied the whole physics part of the book by hand writting! This book inspired me to be a physicist - an idea that has never been changed ever since.Now, >20 years passed, as a physicist working in one of the best institutes in the world. I can't help writing another personal experience on this book. The beauty of this book just can never be exaggerated.Of course, we do not want/need all our kids to become scientists. But if you want them to enjoy the fascination of sciences, even just as a hobby, this book is one of the keys to open the door!As in some reviews, it may be a pity that there is no newer edition of this book, considering much of the contents have indeed been updated now. However, enough books have been messed up by "updates". For this book, enjoying sciences is the most important inspiration to our kids, and they will NOT be confused if they later realize that some contents in the book should have been updated. Renovations/innovations are always the cases for sciences anyway.
Fascinating, even for those who are not math-friendly.Writing style is clear and concise, a bit dry, but the material more than makes up for that.Each individual chapter builds upon the next, but stands on its own, that makes it a GREAT book for travel or lazy lolling days. You can start anywhere, pick where you left off, or read it backwards and it still makes sense.I first read this when I was thirteen. Re-read it again at 60. Its still one of the most interesting little books ever!
I first read Gamow when an undergraduate in philosophy back in the 1950's. Before reading Gamow I got C's in my advanced physics courses. After reading Gamow I got B's. I have felt gratitude for his pedagogical skills ever since.Recently some colleagues have suggested I might give a talk on some elements of relativity and quantum mechanics. By knowledge is very weak concerning, say, the Higgs Boson. But I can say enough to explain the curve of binding energy and neutron absorption and to account for the workings of a light-water reactor. Again, now near the end of my life, I am as dependent as ever on Gamow's pedagogical skills. In my life at any rate, Gamow's popular writings on physics stand as classics.
A short note (trying not to be mawkish) - I read and re-read this book in seventh grade, in 1957. This book changed me. It opened my eyes to worlds suspected but not yet discovered; it became a guide for me. Of course I went into the sciences (physics and engineering), and while that would probably have happened anyway, I must at least partly credit this book. Years later I had the great pleasure of hearing Dr. Gamow (GAM-off) speak at UC Santa Barbara. He was old (at least to me) and his accent was heavy, but that lecture sparkled and effervesced as his books. As others noted, when Dr. Gamow led his explorations into the wonders of physics, he did not hesitate to develop the elegant mathematical concepts along the way, clearly and understandably. He assumed his audience was intelligent enough to apprehend the concepts. There may be more modern writings, more up-to-date coverage of physics for initiates; but I know of none that alternately glows and scintillates as this one does. This book is a jewel, a gift.
George Gamow's book "One Two Three...Infinity" is an good survey of the sciences. I bought this book after hearing Noam Chomsky speak highly of it while being interviewed. His chapters on space, the fourth dimension, and relativity dig a bit deeper than "Hawking's Brief History of Time." Some knowledge of algebra is helpful with this book as seen in chapter five, "Relativity and Time and Space." His exploration of quantum mechanics through dissection and examination of the atom is a good starting point. Gamow stops short of delving into John Wheeler's 1955 quantum foam concept and moves on to the properties of light. It's odd that he didn't cover it in this 1961 edition.

Having traveled to Negril before, I have a pretty good idea of what to expect on our next trip. Even so, I was curious to see what this guide might offer and for the price it was a no-brainier.I found some useful tips from an insider's perspective and a handful of new places to check out. There's a lot of coverage of hedonism 2, so if you're curious about those shenanigans this guide is for you. (I don't know if we'll be coughing up the cash for a day pass, but I am rather curious myself now.)This book lacks great photos and maps, so it's not that kind of guide, but there are plenty of websites and descriptions of places and various locations to generally point you in the right direction. I definitely feel more confident about my choice of accommodations now (I usually only stay on the West End -this time we'll be at Kuyaba) and feel better prepared overall for the Seven Mile experience.I also found the chapters on local eats to be helpful. I'm a vegetarian and sometimes have had difficulty finding diverse and inexpensive veggie meals on the West End, but this guide has definitely given me a few new places to add to the list. Yah, mon!
The book isn't really written professionally and I think that is deliberate. However, if you want a travel book for Negril there are few and this book does a most excellent job explaining Negril, its people, food, lodgings and alot more. Save big by getting the Kindle version as it's a short read and was priced at $2, while a printed copy was $28. For $2 you'd be crazy not to check it out.
This is probably most useful if you are going to Jamaica primarily to get high and go to nightclubs. It's written in a "dude" sort of tone and the author obviously has spent a lot of time in Jamaica, it just wasn't that helpful for me--but I am old, so for younger types interested in the aforementioned weed and nightclubs, this might be the book for you.
What a fun travel guide! This book led us to off the beaten path cool, hip spots - and steered us away from sketchy places. So glad I got this guide! Lots of helpful tips and suggestions, delivered with a sense of humor. Thanks to Chillin my trip to Negril was a blast!

Let me start out with full disclosure. I have been lifelong friends with the author and fully understand his humor and way of being. George's sense of humor and attitude toward life are ever present in the pages of this book. He presents lots of useful information about how to hang, where to hang and have a fun, yet safe time in Negril and surrounding areas. He gives advice on everything from booking your own flights and accommodations to how to haggle prices with the locals. Throughout the book he repeats the mantra of using common sense, respecting the locals, be safe and most importantly don't be a jerk. I would recommend this book to anyone who is planning a trip to Jamaica no matter their style of relaxation from mild to wild. If for no other reason, those folks planning a trip to Jamaica will find this book full of websites for hotels, resorts, cafes, restaurants, transport services and even the contact info for the embassy should you do something stupid. After reading this book, I am ready to grab my passport, pack my bag and chill on the beach.

After reading it I thought "...well what were you expecting?, the keys to the house of Larry Ellison also?". It has interesting information for a non hacker like me, but much of the security problems are in the Oracle source code, and therefore there is not much I can do about it. Yes, now I know what not to do in the new code I program. You have to be a programmer to make sense of the code listings and have seen like dumps of snifers before. The language used by the author is clear for me.Hope this helps
I was disappointed that there was nothing new in this book that wasn't readily on the internet already. I suppose this is my lesson to stop purchasing books to learn things now-a-days.
The book contains interesting Oracle security topics, but it is old and not all the topics are still valid, I would suggest to buy the book just if you don't have much idea of Oracle DB security.
I've been doing some Oracle research and of course this is the only book on the market that really covers breaking into Oracle with the exception of The Database Hacker's Handbook which came out in 2005. Justin Clark's (and others) SQL Injection Book published in 2009 also covers some Oracle material but not enough to make this book obsolete.I bought this book immediately when it came out in 2007 (yeah I'm super late on the review) but frankly put it down because it was confusing and definitely not suited for anyone that didn't already have a basic exposure to Oracle. I picked it up again in late 2008 after doing the background research on Oracle security and administration. Armed with a better understanding of Oracle in general I attacked the book again, focusing on SQL Injection in the Oracle PL/SQL packages with the goal of going from locating an open TNS listener to getting a shell on the system.The author is well known in the security industry and one of only a handful of Oracle Security "experts", so the skill level was definitely there.Breakdown of the Chapters:Introduction.Chapter 1 Overview of the Oracle RDBMS.Chapter 2 The Oracle Network Architecture.Chapter 3 Attacking the TNS Listener and Dispatchers.Chapter 4 Attacking the Authentication Process.Chapter 5 Oracle and PL/SQL.Chapter 6 Triggers.Chapter 7 Indirect Privilege Escalation.Chapter 8 Defeating Virtual Private Databases.Chapter 9 Attacking Oracle PL/SQL Web Applications.Chapter 10 Running Operating System Commands.Chapter 11 Accessing the File System.Chapter 12 Accessing the Network.Appendix A Default Usernames and Passwords.I think most of the background chapters are "adequate" and the exploitation chapters are very good. At the time of publishing the author released code for vulnerabilities that were brand new. I do have issues with Chapter 5 Oracle and PL/SQL. I think the coverage of PL/SQL is only adequate if you already know PL/SQL. It took me going and reading a lot of other material on the net about PL/SQL to understand things that are glossed over in the chapter. The chapter is good and covers tons of material but from an attacking Oracle perspective more time should have been spent on teaching the reading how to use the "describe" package option in PL/SQL to describe the package to learn how to craft your queries correctly as well as how to research and write your own SQL Injection queries based on published vulnerabilities. More coverage on default privileges and roles would have been useful as well. Again, if you have been an Oracle DBA, you understand this already. If you are an Oracle security researchers you know this already. If you are a pentester trying to get some Oracle under your belt you'll have to go pick up another book or hit the internet to get the background material.The other chapters are good and they cover their stated topics. More examples would have been nice of course. A couple of times we are told to check out the Oracle coverage in The Database Hacker's Handbook. That's just frustrating. While I'm not a huge fan of republishing materials, if information is needed to understand or better understand a topic then include it, its not like OHH was "running long" its very slim for a security book.What knocked the book down to 4 stars was when I went and read the Oracle sections of The Database Hacker's Handbook and it had material that wasn't included in OHH. Given the "slimness" of the book, it wouldn't have hurt the book to reproduce the content from DHH as it is relevant and helps explain the concepts better than the coverage in OHH.
The Oracle Hacker's Handbook (OHH) is a collection of techniques that could be used by an attacker to gain unauthorised access to an Oracle database server upto and including 10gR2. Most of these techniques are currently not public, so OHH is both new knowledge for an attacker and vital warning to those responsible for securing Oracle servers.In a nutshell the new attacks include how to gain the version number remotely, brute force usernames, gain passwords/hashes from the OS, attack the listener, escalate privilege internally through PLSQL Packages and Triggers both directly and indirectly as well as defeating VPD. These attacks are illustrated both directly and through application server. By using these techniques and by accessing the Oracle files directly through the OS an attacker would be able to gain DBA privileges on most secured servers. Additionally using the code examples included an attacker could gain password hashes and then the actual DBA clear text password from the network using the password decryption code included. This will work even with complex quoted passwords.This is the most effective public analysis of security vulnerabilities in Oracle products so far.OHH is a technical book and not really an introduction to the subject though it could be picked up reasonably quickly as the text avoids unnecessary jargon.The book could be enhanced by including more on defense strategies, such as, how to prepare and respond to an attack where the attacker has gained the clear text DBA password.OHH has a free download site for pre-written proof of concept code which will helps avoid unnecessary typing. From a general readability point of view the book is concise and to the point. The sections are logically laid out and the examples have worked when tested. I would recommend those involved in Oracle security to read this book as soon as they can.
When I have started with this book I was amazed and afraid both. By this book all those tricks of SQL injections in Oracle has started to be a public knowledge. So this book is like a knife... you can cut the bread or you can kill with it. :) But let's be honest. It is always better to know especially when you are DBA, because of you are always far behind the attackers who probably spend their lifetime on browsing the code for security flaws. For that reason everyone how is responsible for practical Oracle security should read this book and learn how to defend. I belive that this book will grow in the future and will provide more & more examples. That is the game we use to play. New releases, new bugs, new flaws, new workarounds and finally some vendor final fixes. That is how oracle security process cycle should work. It is worth to be mentioned that in terms of quality, David Litchfield has started completly new period in cycle.

I've read several novels about Morgan and crew, and this was interesting. What I didn't care for so much and which is why I give it three stars is the repetitive aspects. I lost count of the number of times Alex was questioning herself, how many times she thought about a student she cared for, how many times she had to say that her colleague, Karen, was not a field agent, etc.. Ditto with Conley in Manila. How many times did the author have to repeat the nature of the feelings Conley was developing for the Chinese agent who was defecting. Overall, decent but dragging in my opinion.
Felt as if I was reading three stories at once. However all was written very well. The Dan Morgan series is one of my favorites to read, especially that the entire Morgan family was involved. Looking forward to War of Shadows to be available. The Alex Morgan section started out a little bland, but soon became very interesting, then following the vacation of Morgan & his wife cut short by the Russian intervention, tied into what was happening with Alex's situation became interesting to the point that I wanted to keep reading until the end. Am so looking forward to the follow up. The Phillipine portion didn't seem totAlly tied in, but was in itself very interesting.
I don’t usually read thrillers, but my husband has read all of the Dan Morgan books and thought I might like this one. Once again, he was wrong. I loved this book. I knew the setup: Morgan is a former spy who is now a family man and working for a secret international intelligence agency. I knew to expect action--there was plenty of it, and it was a lot of fun. But I didn’t expect the sweep of the story—besides Boston and California, it also takes place in Russia and the Philippines. There’s a moving romance between Morgan’s partner and a mystery woman. There’s also a terrifying germ warfare threat and a nail-biter search and rescue operation. Another joy for me was seeing the family dynamic. I won’t give anything away except to say that Morgan’s wife and his college-age daughter are both caught up in the terrorist plot. I related to the wife, but the daughter was fascinating, and her story broke my heart. The book was rich, fun, and exciting. Can’t wait for the next one.
Another great Dan Morgan thriller. Easy, fast read that keeps your attention. Must read these books in order to follow the character development.
