Tuvia Tenenbom, the author of three bestsellers in a row, is a journalist, dramatist, and the founder of the Jewish Theater of New York. Tuvia studied for his doctorate in English literature at St. John's University, earned his MFA in playwriting at CUNY-Brooklyn, received his BS in mathematics and computer science from Touro, and finished his rabbinical studies in Jerusalem. He also studied Christianity and Islam in Israel and New York as well as journalism, acting, theater, and finance (at NYU).

This is the third book of Tuvia's that i have read and by far enjoyed the most.Under all the layers of PC and "good manners" lies the truth. Tuvia Tenenbom has that innate quality of being able to ask anything, say anything without guile. He has an almost childlike appearance & naiveté which disarms all those he interacts with. He is razor sharp however with insights and honesty that are rare and hard to find in this day & age. Yes, truth hurts but it will also set us free. This book is a must for all humans, jewish or not.
Who is this chameleon when not pretending to be someone else? Jewish? Does he ever go to synagogue when not required for an interview? German? Does it express itself other than his choice of beverage? American? After decades can he define it? Is he proud to be an Amrican citizen?Superficial and depressing in the way his earlier 'Catch the Jew' wasn't. It offers no different options even in its conclusion. For example, if determining parentage percentage to be an Indian is racist what alternative does he propose. Keep in mind Israel demands at least 25% for entrance as a Jew and most Halacha (Jewish law) 50%.Tenenbom (Christmas tree?) is always folksy and entertaining but the 'Lies they tell' is not his best work.
To begin with, I have read this and two other books by Mr. Tenenbom in which he engages in first-person antagonizing of his interviewees. His methods are provocative and somewhat unethical, as he frequently lies about his national and religious identity in order to get his subjects' truest feedback. I have serious questions about whether the people he is interviewing are giving their truest answers, or the one they believe are likeliest to satisfy the correspondent. For that alone, his books should be banished, or at least get no more than a single star.THAT said, the books are extremely entertaining, and the author should get double-stars for his willingness to tackle identity politics in a depth that no one else seems to address. The truths he unearths about human nature are achingly painful to observe, which means they have the ring of truth. All people, all relationships, all families, all nations, all religions and all ethnicities eventually have to deal with "membership" -- who is IN, who is OUT; who belongs, and who does not. We establish various boundaries for ourselves in interesting and contradictory ways. For Tenenbom this inconsistency sparks ridiculous outrage, which is itself entertaining to read.For example, in the United States, our constitution establishes that an American is someone born here, or to an American parent, or naturalizes. In Judaism, we are members of the tribe if our mother is Jewish, or if we "naturalize" through conversion. For certain native American groups, membership follows 1/16th "blood." In Germany, there are people whose grandparents and parents were born there, but have not been able to become citizens. It makes sense, in principal, that groups are entitled to determine who does, or does not belong. Yet for some reason, the native American tribal membership pattern is outrageous to Tenenbom. This is ridiculous in itself -- but because it is true to his own personality, it is interesting to read.This book deals with the intricacies, conflicts, and ridiculousness of American identity politics. Written just as Donald Trump was about to be elected president of the United States, and this may date the book, somewhat. But as of THIS review being written, when women are marching in defense of their rights, and Nazis are carrying citronella torches and guns through the streets, when the AltRight and the AltLeft are looking more and more like one another, this book is painfully, heartbreakingly relevant.
This book is written in a very serious vein but at the same time is laced with a certain amount of humour. There are a number of chapters which brings a smile to the reader.The author writes in the first person and relates the meetings that he had with Americans of all classes – from the wealthy to the poor as well as with black and white Americans. He had travelled the length and breadth of the US and visited most of the states. Each state seems to be an island within itself and the people living there were interviewed by the author. All the interviews were spontaneous and in many cases surprising. Tuvia Tenenbom kept an open mind during all his interviews and has the gift of gaining a certain amount of trust from the people he interviewed that allowed them to open up and express personal views and life experiences they had, which they kept secret even from their closest friends and relatives.All his the interviews are anecdotal and laced with cynicism when it comes to judging his interviewees. He always introduced himself as a journalist with another identity, never saying that he is Jewish and that he is from Germany in most cases.Many of the people that he had interviewed seemed pleasant enough until he asked them about their views on climate change, Israel and the Palestinians. Those who were against climate change were, strangely enough, also against Israel concerned about the Palestinians. Some even expressed anti-Jewish sentiments.The book is quite a fast read, entertaining and humorous in parts. It is deserving of four stars and I would recommend it to those who are interested in the heterogeneous population of the US and its characters.
The honesty of Tuvia is admirable, no PC obfuscation for him. He is a courageous investigator not afraid diving into the darkest parts of a city to interview his subjects. Apparently he has an uncanny talent for connecting with everyone. The style in which he tells the story however is somewhat erratic, he jumps from here to there both geographically as well as informatively, which takes away from the subject he wants to depict. An entertaining read but not a deep one.
I wish I could write like Tuvya - because if I could, I would write a better book. His generalizations on the basis of single experiences are not always warranted. As a foreigner to the American scene he does see things that Americans tend to overlook, but he doesn't really have a clue about what makes the USA tick. He obviously has problems with hsi background. He is not comfortable with completely abandoning his Jewish background, nor does he seem entirely happy with permanently leaving his native Israel. His pretending to be a German does not quite come off. So what is he?

The Diaries of Adam and Eve and Other Stories is an utter delight to read. What a gift that great Southern gentleman, Mark Twain had! I enjoyed reading his work so much that it inspired me to write a little playlet and produce it before an audience who also found it vastly amusing-- according to the strength of their laughter.I highly recommend this Twain book for anyone wanting to smile.
I liked the Diaries of Adam and Eve. It is a humorous short story that gave the first man and woman a personality that differs from the well known bible version of them. Adam is annoyed by Eve, at first, and Eve trys to figure out why. This version is slightly different than other versions in the fact that it doesn't have some excerpts that other versions do, but I used it for school work so this version was just fine. I'd definitely reccomend this book to someone who'd like a laugh.
The Diaries are charming and endearing. They are followed by a few short stories of a very different genre - not really dark but sardonic. I would suggest the Diaries Annotated, however, since this version of their diaries is quite short.
This was wonderful. I laughed so hard with Adam and Eve in their conversations. My friend bought it after she read my copy. My minister liked it too. Mark Twain is a wonderful writer.
I don't know if the Diaries of Adam and Eve are well-known among Twain's works, but the works in this book are wonderful--witty, touching, and memorable. A great read!Kathy
