It seems like decades ago that I bought Dobson's fantasy novel Scriber, although it has really only been five years.. I have reread Scriber at least five times. The Flaw in All Magic is so different from my much-thumbed copy of Scriber. (Can a Kindle book be much-thumbed?) It is almost hard to believe the two are written by the same gifted author. And yet Scriber is not without humor and certainly not without suspense, The two books are simply at two quite separate points on the fantasy continuum line between serious (a la Tolkien) and the delightfully silly Myth series by Robert Asprin. (I am talking about a line folks, not the space-time continuum; that's sci-fi.)The Flaw in All Magic is a cannot – put – it – down fantasy mystery. It reminds me somewhat of Barbara Hambly's mysteries. But it really isn't at all like that. This book is fun from start to finish, but without being slapstick or the reliance on clichéd situations we have seen all too many times in fantasy novels. That is not to say this book does not have a dramatic finish; what worthwhile mystery doesn't?Please, Mr. Dobson, if you are reading this, give us more books in the Magebreakers series soon. (I am assuming it will be a series because it is labeled Book 1.) I promise every one of my extended family members will be thrilled with this series.
I think I found this by looking through the steampunk category on Amazon. It's more magepunk than steampunk, with magically driven engines and an airship lifted partly by spells; a steampunkish/dieselpunkish feel to the setting, but with lots of magic-as-technology and an assortment of fantasy races (elves, dwarves, gnomes, orcs, goblins, and so forth).Because this is pretty close to what I often write myself, I read it with great interest. Because it's extremely well done, I also read it with great enjoyment.The protagonist is a man without magical ability who was able to fool the magical university authorities for several years using a combination of sleight-of-hand and bluff, culminating in a dissertation which revealed his deception, and argued that only someone without magic could really understand it, because the flaw in all magic is the mage. Mages, being human(0id), are subject to error, and egotistical blindness to their own errors. (I was reminded of the flaws in computer programs introduced by programmers.) He's a rogue, but an ethical one, a little bit obsessive, and courageous when he needs to be.His sidekick is a half-orc who has come to the island where magic is still freely practiced because she wants to see amazing sights. Her sense of awe and wonder is a beautifully handled part of her character, and asserts itself even when she's in great peril. She's a good-natured character, contrary to orc stereotypes, and despite the fact that she's experienced prejudice her whole life (her orcish relatives see her as too human, and everyone else sees her as too orcish). I enjoyed the fact that she was the muscle in the pair. It's a simple, even a common, trope-switch to make the woman the physically dangerous one, but the main character's easy acceptance of it without any discussion gained the book extra points with me.Both characters are terrific, with enough backstory to feel real and sympathetic, introduced (like the worldbuilding) just when it's needed, and just as much as it's needed for the reader's understanding. Their collegial relationship is a joy to see, particularly since there's no attraction between them, but there is respect.The plot is a mystery/thriller, with a locked-room murder (of someone who mattered to the protagonist); politics (including echoes of current real-world politics of the arrogant, regressive far-right sort); fights, pursuits, and edge-of-the-seat physical danger; and roguish cleverness. The pacing, I felt, was a good balance between keeping things constantly moving and not failing to pause for reflection.On top of excellent editing, this all-around facility with the craft of writing helped push this into 5-star territory for me, and made this one of my favourite books this year. I'm very glad to have discovered another author who I can trust to tell a good story well.
I'm always stoked when I stumble across a promising new author. I just got done reading The Flaw in All Magic - which is Book 1 in Ben S. Dobson's Magebreakers series - and I cannot pimp it enough. Dobson's worldbuilding skills are legit and immersive. It's a fantasy book and an underdog story. It features as leads a much maligned, scrappy hero and an even more fantastic sidekick.In the hodgepodge city of Thaless, on the small island nation of the Audland Protectorate, Tane Carver, for the past two years, has scraped by courtesy of his having parlayed his deep knowledge of magic into odd jobs. It's ironic that Tane doesn't much care for magic; he distrusts it mightily. Except he's got a knack for catching the flaws in how a spell or ward is written. He's so gangster at it that, for four years, he was able to fool the University into believing he was a mage. Except our boy is 100% magicless. But then he got found out and expelled. Hence the past two years of scraping by.But when a student is murdered at University behind impregnable wards, Tane is summoned by his old teacher for a consultation gig. Tane jumps at the opportunity, thinking already of how he can finesse this into more lucrative prospects ahead.The plot description is what convinced me into trying this. And it wasn't too long before the story started giving me a whiff of Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser. See, Tane is the clever, sticky-fingered hombre who partners up with a giant basher. But that's just a first impression;there's a bit more to it than that. The Flaw in All Magic delivers on a string of action-packed sequences, but it's as much a locked room mystery, with the caveat that the author doesn't really play fair with parceling out the clues so that we can all play along.There are three main principals in the cast, all of whom I really liked. Tane Carver is your typical rumpled, smartass detective who is juuuust a wee bit more clever than the baddies and the constabulary and whoever else is in the room. He's been estranged from Constable Inspector Indree Lovial of Stooketon Yard, a University graduate with whom he once had an intimate relationship. Observe Constable Lovial be not at all thrilled that Tane has received special dispensation to work on her homicide case. But, more than anything else, what kept me swiping my Kindle page over is Tane's impromptu partner, the newcomer Kadka of Clan Nadivek. Kadka is half-orc, half-wide-eyed-wonder, and half-I-will-hit-you-in-the-face, and yes, I know that's three halves. I try to never use this word, but Kadka is simply delightful, and I love the camaraderie that quickly develops between her and Tane. Kadka is what makes this an unputdownable read for me. Just her zest alone at being in Thaless and being exposed to so much magic, that ratchets up my excitement for Dobson's worldbuilding. I'm very curious to explore more of not only the colorful city of Thaless but the Audland Protectorate, nation that welcomes all manner of magical creatures.I also want to mention another character I really enjoyed - never mind that she isn't "on camera" much. There aren't plenty of folks who lean towards Tane's side. Surprisingly, the Lady Protector Abena, the most important person in the Protectorate, is open-minded enough to give our guy the benefit of a doubt. This makes me like her and want to see more of her. What a fun read. I tore thru it in one sitting. At the book's ending, a key plotline is left dangling, a dangerous conspiracy left at large. Luckily, there's a sequel in the works, titled The Emperor's Mask.

This book would've been much better as an article. You really get the impression that it was limited content stretched out to fill enough pages to sell a book and promote a board game. I realize repetition is a teaching tool, but the repetition of some pages seemed - again - to be more about filling pages to sell as a book. Not enough good content to recommend reading.
This is my first Book review on Amazon or ever, so I'll try to keep short and to the point.When I first found and bought this book, I thought it was, as the name states, a guide to investing. To my surprise, I found it anything but that.He speaks as he always does on the mindset and how to approach the world of investing, the different types of investors and so on..I found it very irritating that he kept referring to his Rich Dad in every bit of advice he gives, a sort of scapegoat to me. Especially, since Rich Dad is not a real person according to many interview done with him.The silver lining is that there are some solid key points here and there, but what I have to say is that: *it does not take +400 pages to say what he has to say* he is literally rehashing old stories from the first two books and retelling them times and times again.In all honesty, I started this review with a 4-stars review and dropped it to 3-stars in the middle of this review and now at the end of it I'm not even sure if those 3-stars are a correct assessment of the merit of his book.In his defense, he did say he is a Best-SELLER not a best-writer.
It did not really go into depth describing investments. It was more a motivational book about "making money work for you" and "getting out of the rat race." I would have rated higher if there was more concrete advice instead of glittering generalities.
OK, let me start out by saying that I like Robert's way of making you think. I read a few of the Rich Dad books. He changed how I look at money and wealth. I have unknowingly even been implementing much of what he preaches over the past few years and what he says does make alot of sense.Here's my problem with this book. First of all, as with his other books he simply repeats statements and thoughts over and over. He claims it is a learning tool. I agree to a point, but after awhile it really starts to look like he's just filling in the pages to make the book longer.Secondly, he says alot of the exact same things as the other books. no real new info here. Although if you haven't read his other books (and I suggest RDPD first) then this is a good overview.Finally, and most importantly, my issue with Robert is that while he makes great generalized comments he never actually tells his readers what to actually do. He kinda skips around the subject. So when I saw his "Guide to investing" I expected this to be more than the same generalizations. No such luck. He still doesn't quite get into what to actually do in a step by step manner. As such this book is mistitled as a "Guide" to investing." More like Robert's general thoughts toward investing.I can look past his somewhat remarkable ability to retain specific conversations and events from more than 45 years ago...or the way his claims are not really verifiable...or how in one book a story is slightly different than in another book...all of which makes one wonder if he made up the whole background story in order to have a theme for his books. However, I cannot keep reading his books if he doesn't start to present new, fresh ideas and specifics.
I’ve read and listen to audio version 3 times and at the third time I found out actually this is the truly the best investment book I’ve ever read.I had read several books from other great investment mentors such as Tony Robbins, the problem is, they are the one teach you to be wealthy as a middle class, but Robert Kiyosaki is the one really guiding me to be a rich man. tho I love the whole book but currently the chapters serves me the best is the first 10 chapters, on my third time reading them I finally learned the core lessons such as:Mindset to become a player in this money gameIt doesn’t take money to make moneyHow following a simple boring formula and make a plan can make me rich ultimately.I truly enjoyed these priceless content, in my opinion people rate low on this book are the ones want a clear answer on “what do I invest in†but it just don’t work that wayFinancial Literacy always trumps hot tips
This book changed my mindset about life. There are many great points on investing with deeper thought effect all areas of your life. If I can only now come up with a great idea to start my own business to get me out of the rat race that I have been trained for 37 years to do, may I find the true path in the B quadrant. I never dreamed the things I have been taught just like poor dad taught his son would lock me into this road. My mind is open and the challenge is before me. Thank you Robert for such a great educational inspirational book. I look forward to teaching my five year old your cash flow game as she gets older.

I am honored to give this book 5 stars because it was extremely well-written with so much of Krista’s years of experience and knowledge. Also, when reading this book, I was so addicted to it and couldn’t wait to read the next chapter due to its valuable content. I could feel her passion when reading this book because of her on-going enthusiasm and wealth of knowledge. She was very detailed and thorough with dealing with buyers/sellers and the pros/cons in each transaction. Her approach in dealing with buyers/sellers in a “buyer or seller market†is invaluable. Great information and I highly recommend it.
She never gives real advice she just keeps saying the same thing over and over again. "Be like me....be progressive" and never helps with real ways to do this. Over and over the same message with no instruction. Waste of money. Same things you already know.
I loved the fact she has creative ways to get started. The book was easy to read and gives tons of ideas which can be implemented. With a little more time and effort you can be at the top of your market.
I will definitely refer to this book over and over as I build my real estate practice a s expertise as a Community Market Leader.

Used book not in the best condition. It's big - 735 pages. Tries to cover a lot but doesn't really go deep enough into how the code works. More a "try this code" thing. Most "problems" are design-oriented. I haven't found a solution to my problems in it, but I'm sure I ultimately will.
I've had this book for a while and I still constantly reference it. I've been working with Flex since 2005 and I usually only get a few good tidbits out of a book like this but the Flex 4 Cookbook has been quite the opposite for me. It's chalked with great examples and techniques. Even if you're a Flex guru, pick this book up. It definitely has plenty of gems in it.

Great book, it is always close to hand on my desk and offers a great resource when you start to bang you're head against the code!
This book is a real disappointment. The table of contents is nearly unusable on a Kindle. The concept of presenting a problem to solve, and then the solution is a great idea, but apparently totally lost on the authors. Most problems statements state the solution as the problem statement. For example, the problem statement for 2.5 is "You want to use a custom item renderer to render data items visually within a DataGroup". To an engineer that sounds more like a solution statement. The question is "why would I want to use a ...". There are precious few explanation in the book of why and when one would want to use the solutions.
This is just one of those books every Flex developer should own. With each release, Flex has continued to prove its pedigree as the best framework for developing rich interactive experiences. Flex 4 is no exception (it is a superb example of how an ECMA based language and XML can be combined into a stellar programming environment). It has been overhauled with features that make creating apps an absolute joy; it's as if the developers of the Flex framework personally listened to the community's feedback and integrated the best suggestions. The authors of this book are extremely well respected Flex developers and active community participants, so it's no wonder they produced a book that covers every important detail each new or seasoned developer should know. I've been stuck on numerous occasions, whereby turning to the cookbook solved my problems so that I could go about my day without losing any hair. This book covers all of the new features like skinning, states, the spark component framework, layout management, animation and Air 2.0 as well as covering features from the previous versions. All in all, if you are new to Flex or just need a tip or two (or thirty), this book is well worth the money and won't let you down.
Flex 4 Cookbook is written to save our time. It consists of hundreds of tested recipes for developing Rich Internet Applications based on Adobe Flex 4 framework. It let's the reader to learn not only techniques of solving problems but also reasons behind them. In my opinion the Flex 4 Cookbook should be the most appropriate for intermediate Flex developers. There are a lot of code examples accompanying recipies which are ready to be taken advantage of in your applications. You can also find many references to additional on-line resources in this book allowing to suplement knowledge and understanding regarding a particular topic. The book is extremely useful and I recommend it to anyone who likes to have a solid off-line reference on the desk.
