About the Author

Jacqueline Woodson (www.jacquelinewoodson.com) is the 2018-2019 National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature, and she received the 2018 Children's Literature Legacy Award. She is the 2014 National Book Award Winner for her New York Times bestselling memoir BROWN GIRL DREAMING, which was also a recipient of the Coretta Scott King Award, a Newbery Honor Award, the NAACP Image Award and the Sibert Honor Award. Woodson was recently named the Young People’s Poet Laureate by the Poetry Foundation. Her recent adult book, Another Brooklyn, was a National Book Award finalist. I first read this book a little over a year ago, maybe longer, for my young adult literature class. I had to present on it and procrastinated, of course, so I read it from a critical approach. I don't even think I finished the whole thing--just got close to the end and spark notes the rest.Now that I've read it for pleasure instead of analysis I love it even more! I love how mature Ellie and Miah seem. The reader has to keep reminding themselves (as does Jacqueline Woodson throughout other character's dialogue and their inner thoughts) they are only 15. I like that the thoughts on interracial relationships are viewed through the minds of young people and that the reader can see how Ellie grows from being naive to aware of the problems non-white people face.Beyond the race factor, the love between Miah and Ellie is so real, true, genuine, and easy. They came together because they were meant to. I love that they are essentially the same person in their feelings and loneliness which in turn bonds them in a way no one can understand.The tragic ending upset me but also really humbled the situation. It brought life back in the mix, showed reality, ripping the reader out of the dream escape previously created.Besides the grammar issues, this book is amazing, very fast and emotionally moving. Go read it now. Everyone should be able to relate to at least one character or situation.

This book makes my list of favorite books of all time, so much so that I've purchased it 5 times, yes FIVE. I lend it out and never get it back because its that good.Its a quick read, but a necessary one that pulls at your heart strings.Buy it, read it, love it. But don't lend it out because you won't get it back.

I should have known better...I've been touched by Jaqueline Woodson's writing before.I picked up If You Come Softly after one of my 6th grade students recommended it to me. I read the first few chapters effortlessly, and when someone asked me what it was about, I simply said, "Not much." You see--it's not an in your face narrative. It's simple and soft, and the alternating perspectives are hardly noticed--all signs of outstanding writing. I was halfway through the book before I realized the gentle power of the story.Ellie and Miah attend the same school and have similar views of the world, but they are so different that their sudden love for each other seems impossible. Ellie is the white daughter of a distantly married couple; her numerous brothers and sisters are older and have moved throughout the country. Miah is the black son of celebrities who have recently separated. Both teenagers attend the exclusive Percy School, which is where they meet by chance and fall in love. Despite the stares and whispers, they choose to stay together and learn more about each other. Their love is mature and real (and the author spares us from unnecessary sex scenes). We know from page one that tragedy awaits this relationship, but it doesn't damper the unfolding of their relationship and our interest in the potential of their lives. They love each other innocently and completely, and they tip-toe cautiously into the world of each other's families.Woodson demonstrates a world view through the voices of these two high school characters--they understand more about race relations than most adults do. There are times, however, when their views of races seems too simplistic--perhaps this was intentional, or perhaps this is Woodson's own view. It's too easy to group together all "whites" or all "blacks" and to create stereotypes of old ladies who stare. But the overall message is appreciated.I can't say enough about the gentle nature of this story. How an author can provoke so much emotion in such a delicately written story is truly amazing. Woodson is a masterful writer, and this story is perfectly told.

A beautifully written story about love. That old adage that people "fall" in love is so true. You just kind of stumble upon it. Love happens to any and everyone!

I loved this story. It was beautiful and very sad. I was a bit disappointed that the author didn't delve more into how the characters handled the negative reactions from people who didn't agree with their relationship but overall, the story told an important message.

Jeremiah Roselind is an intelligent black teenage boy who has to attend a fancy prep school. He bumps into Ellie Eisen, a white girl, in the hallway, and they are immediately attracted to one another. Disapproving glances, whispering voices, snide remarks -it isn't the reactions from other people that tear this young couple apart before their relationship has a real chance to grow, but a tragic event.This is an interesting, well-written story about interracial dating. I was saddened by the ending, but at the same time I can't wait to read the sequel, Behind You.

An absolute beautifully written book! It is a book I thoroughly enjoyed reading.

I read this with my 8th grader, and it was not a very compelling story. The ending was so abrupt and unexpected.

The two books cover much of the same ground and at approximately the same level, but the present volume takes a more didactic approach and provides a more comprehensive description of the theoretical framework to non-adiabatic interactions and scattering theory as well as recent experimental advances such as velocity map imaging, femtochemistry, coherent control and ultracold chemistry.  Each chapter closes with a set of half a dozen or so well chosen illustrative problems, and each contains a number of study boxes to highlight important concepts or review background material. Since each chapter is written by a different author (or authors) there is a danger that such a volume simply becomes a collection of review papers, but through the inclusion of the study boxes and a common style for the figures and tables the editors, Mark Brouard and Claire Vallance, have done an excellent job of pulling the work together into a coherent whole. The volume is well proofread and extensively referenced. I am sure it will soon be seen on the desk of any young scientist embarking on a research career in the field.  My only complaint is that the book binding is truly dreadful and I have already broken the spine of my copy. When I decided to start working with XNA 3.0, I searched long and hard for just the right book. Something that would get me started specifically on XNA as a graphics programming component of the overall .NET architecture.I found Riemer's XNA tutorial site and was impressed by the quality of both the code and the writing. I was able to learn a lot in short period of time. I saw that he also had a book in the works covering XNA 3.0 and so I decided to research it. Based on what I found, I saw that the book was an excellent complement to the tutorial site, covering lots of detailed information not found in the tutorials. So I decided to order it.Wise move. The book is an outstanding resource. And a real bargain in these times of high-priced and bloated programming tomes. I basically like everything about the book, but there are a couple of things I want to mention that I particularly appreciate:First is the format. The book is organized in a problem/solution recipe format. This works really well because it mimics the way engineers work. It makes it easy to find the solution to a particular problem, but it also makes for fruitful browsing.Second are the code snippets contained in the book. I find that just the right amount of code and context are included with each example. I have yet to find a sample that is either confusing because of a lack of context or that is unclear because the point of the sample is buried in irrelevant code. (Of course, the full source is available online.)I can recommend this book without hesitation to beginning and intermediate XNA programmers who have some experience with Visual Studio and C#. (But one doesn't have to be an expert in these technologies; I think a sound hobbyist or student level of familiarity would be enough if one is sufficiently motivated.) Some experience with the general principles of computer graphics and matrix algebra would be helpful too, but I think these things could be learned concurrently.All in all, max stars, I'd buy it again in a heartbeat.

This book has been very helpful. I was already a little familiar with XNA programming, so this book was a good logical next step. It does not cover game dev from beginning to end, but covers a lot of advanced techniques that you will quickly need to know after you start. I'm building a 3d game and this book has been a very valuable resource for research. Besides examples, i think the explanations are really insightful. Especially when he covers the optimized and non-optimized way of doing things (like billboarding).

If you need to develop in 3D with XNA 3.0 by all means get this book. It can be either a step by step treatment of XNA game rendering for the beginner, or a problem solving solution approach for the advanced user. For my Role Playing Game, I needed an introduction to animation and terrain effects and was treated two large sections on the subjects(chapters 4 &5). His web tutorial is good too.[...]So try both at the same time. Many of the free tutorials on the web, including creators club, are still for XNA 2.0 and are out of date and in some cases are incompatible with 3.0 development. Not so here.The code download has one drawback, chapter 4 is not available on [...].-John

It's a good book but the table of contents crashes on my kindle for Android (running on a Motorola Xoom). As it is a recipe book, it's pretty useless without it.Would give 4 stars if the table of contents worked, as the book delives what it promises.

I have tinkered with game programming of and on for years. It always started the same. I'd want to learn to make a game.I'd buy a book. after a couple weeks I'd quit in disgust. "Why do they make it so freakin hard?" I'd ask every time. I'm sorry but C++ programming and DirectX SDK programming just plain sucks (sadly c++ is better than the alternatives though...) I absolutely hate it. After I started with C# and .NET I just plain won't go back. Id rather not program at all If I had to do that. with C# it's actually FUN! whatta concept?So anyway, I'd go through this cycle. I'd bounce back and forth between books each proposing their way of learning to be the best and each espousing various game engines and I'd always end up stymied at some point because of some technical hurdle I just couldnt get past. Oh I could do the projects in these books just fine (assuming the code actually worked. Which is rare I have found) but inevitably when I'd try to do something outside the framework of the book I was using I'd always fail and be totally frustrated.So I bought this book and I have to admit I was pretty skeptical. A cookbook for programming? thats probably just marketing bull or so I thought...Fast forward to few weeks later after doing the recipe's in the book I find that I am actually making real progress for the first time ever!! Im actually making real components to my own game engine and figuring out how to solve my own problems instead of relying on someone else's game engine. Some one else's crappy code. No more! I'm on my way baby!!!The writing is very clear. All of the code I've used has worked flawlessly which in my experience with these books is simply a miracle.If you want to learn XNA 3.0+ I HIGHLY recommend this book to you. It is head and shoulders above the rest.

Book required for a class in Medical Assisting. It's written by a pro-insurance company trade organization. All hail the holy health insurers. The text is boring. The information questionable... and the homework/testing resources?... wow are they bad. I thought originally it was just a bad professor.. but then I realized she was taking them from the book. And there is no room for deviation from the text.It quite literally kept me from continuing on to add a medical coding certificate to my MA degree program. Not spending any more of my money on this propaganda.
