Part One:Understanding good FitKenneth has you take photos and make a croquis based on your photos, which I think is an excellent idea especially if you would like to know which designs would flatter your figure. I think this is a well written section and the drawings support the contents.2. This is where you evaluate the clothes you wear. This section involves looking at the fit issues of the models presented in this book. He also has you keep a note of what fit issues are similar to yours for later correction. Kenneth also adds his own comments about the garment in a section called Style Comments. I also like that he references later chapters and pages if you have a similar problem and want to jump right in to fixing it.This chapter includes fit issues, style comments and a written RTW alteration section.3.)The smart fitting alteration method,This was a very clearly written section on altering the actual pattern. I only wish he has stated for the grid method you are basically adding or removing the needed amount from a different more accessible area, overall I think this section could have been bit more indepth and include if/where you would not want to use this method.4.)Make a muslin includes supplies needed and how to copy the pattern and complete the muslin. Also what initial changes should be made on the pattern before making a muslin. How to make sure your muslin is on grain,laying out the pattern. This section is also written in very clear detailPart II:Read the wrinklesIn this section he makes muslins from commercial patterns for his models. He teaches you how to identify the wrinkles,pin out the wrinkles-He does not go over which pattern size to start with and why.I think this just may be a kindle issue in general but, Kenneth would start talking about a garment and the garment itself would not be shown until a couple of pages later. The first time this happened I was like ( Wait,What, but she has on a blazer in this pic-not a leather jacket).I really enjoyed his tone of writing it was if an instructer was right beside you, giving little pointers.Part 111 Altering the pattern,Which really puts all of the steps together, fitting and a muslin and correct the pattern, refining the fit during the second fitting and the final fitting.Correcting the paper patternAppendix I:Essential measuring points, with indepth diagramsAppendix II: Wearing a design ease, a written section with a table includedAppendix III: Full Bust AdjustmentAppendix IV:Rotate A DartAppendix V:Three step sleeveIndexThe contents in this book -making a muslin and reading the wrinkles-is how I learned to fit. So when I saw this book I was extremely happy. Now that I have worked with it, here is my view.This book is very intuitively written, and I do enjoy it.If you are a beginner though, this may not be the book for you quite yet I do not think this book will teach a newbie how to read the wrinkles correctly. There are photos but no diagrams showing the wrinkles, no photos side by side showing incorrect garments versus correct fitting garments in section one. You do however get a sense of how the garment should look from the before during and after muslin in section 2The books does not cover coats, or pants. Overall I will say I enjoyed this book but think for others more inexperienced it should be coupled with another say the Sarah Veblen: Fitting Book. It seems they compliment each other extremely well. I like that this book is not just dedicated towards correcting fitting issues like (The perfect fit or fitting for every figure) This one tries to get you to be a bit more independent with fitting.To me, is this a must-have fitting book? No, but I can clearly see how beneficial this will be for others on their fitting journey.

I am a total Kenneth King fan and also a fitting wonk, so this book works for me.However, I would not necessary recommend it for most sewists. It has some editing issues, and a couple of the sample garments that are supposed to be well-fitted still show pull lines. It is a truly deep dive into fitting issues, and for most sewists I think Sarah Veblen's Complete Photo Guide to Perfect Fitting is a much better choice.One exception: if you are looking for a way to alter patterns when you have pinned in an alteration in the middle of a pattern piece (i.e., not connected to a seamline), then Professor King's method is absolute genius. It has been previously covered in a past issue of Threads, but if you don't have access to that, the purchase price of this book is worth just this one golden nugget of information.If you are thinking of buying this book, checking it out of the library or borrowing a copy first is a good idea.

This is a GREAT book. King’s writing style is easy to read, his instructions are clear, the photos are great, and the methods are useful to any body of any age and any dimension.He had me at Understanding Good Fit. I’ve been appalled and at times horrified at some social media images of garments that have pulls, drag lines, side seams that veer to the front or back, vertical and horizontal wrinkles and other indicators of poor fit. Yet followers of these accounts fawn over them and exclaim how perfectly they fit the wearer’s body. Sorry to piddle in anyone’s cornflakes folks, but it just ain’t so. While design ease is a feature of patterns, and closeness of clothing to the body is a personal choice, there are some telltale signs that a garment simply doesn’t fit, and many (most?) people have not been trained to identify those signs. Kenneth King has, and he generously shares that knowledge in this book.There are only two downsides, IMO. As King himself admits, this method isn’t easy (I’d go so far as to say it’s really hard) to accomplish if you don’t have a fitting buddy or a custom dress form. That is a real downside, but it is not insurmountable. Also, and this is a really minor nit, I would have loved it if the book showed the before and after garments side-by-side on his model subjects so you don’t have to flip from the back of the book to the front to see the changes.Other than that this is a terrific resource. Do I think it’s a must-have in any sewing aficionado’s library? YES!Don’t hesitate on this one. You’ll be really glad you bought it.

FANTASTIC book!!! This containes so much information that I have been searching for now all in one place. Clearly written, wonderful photographs and using "real" everyday women to illustrate how to fit clothing. (Thanks to all of the women who allowed Mr. King to use their body type in this book.) Mr. King said his "mission for this book was to help the female sewist better understand the shape she has and the best way to fit it." MISSION ACCOMPLISHED. A must have. Thank you Mr. King.

This is absolutely the best book on fitting muslins I have read. It is clearly written, the photographs are excellent and it shows step by step how to read wrinkles and drag lines to make the correct alterations to both the muslin and paper pattern. Highly recommended.
