She has been involved in the development of several body image-related scales. Dr. Smolak is author or editor of seven books and dozens of journal articles and book chapters. Galileo is mistakenly believed by many to have invented the telescope—a misconception that the scientist did little to correct in his own time. Rather, as Reeves, an associate professor of comp lit at Princeton, reminds readers in reviewing both the myths and facts of telescopy, Galileo perfected a relatively crude Dutch invention that he had gotten wind of. It was his improved version, which he christened a telescope, that he used to discover the four large moons around Jupiter and the topography of the Earth's moon. However, as Reeves recounts, reports of magical mirrors and lenses dated back to the lighthouse of ancient Alexandria, which according to legend, was topped by an enormous mirror that could spy enemy ships and set them on fire. Stories circulated about other cultures, often Eastern, whose rulers used mirrors to keep a watchful eye on their citizens and spot invaders from afar. The English friar and scientist Francis Bacon intrigued generations with stories of marvelous looking glasses and a mirror that Julius Caesar supposedly used to observe the coast of England from France. Not meant for those who want a systematic exposition of the technical development of the telescope. It is, however, a fascinating, detailed, deeply researched and novel approach to the history of the telescope. Conjures up and immerses the reader in the the complex zeitgeist of the 16th and early 17th centuries from which emerged the telescope. Sets the invention in the context of bitter scientific, religious and politic rivalry, scheming for patronage and superstition. The work emphasizes the role of slow and garbled communication of the time and the still rampant superstition, which combined to cause the conflation and confusion of rational and supernatural explanations of the telescope and other cotemporaneously emergent technologies (like the camera obscura and altimetry). The book is scholarly, but somewhat convoluted, at times testing the patience of the reader. In the end, it rewards the effort of the reader.
Great book for the amatuer astronomers library.
Although this book's subtitle is "The Telescope and the Mirror", there is very little discussion on the technical evolution and actual uses of these devices. Instead, the author focuses on the myths and legends about "magic mirrors" allowing the ancients to see what people were doing a great many miles away. The evolution of such myths over the centuries is also discussed, culminating with the invention of a real telescope, knowledge of which eventually reached Galileo. This is indeed a scholarly work. It is focused and heavily annotated, i.e., 166 pages of main text are supported by 50 pages of notes/references. However, scholarly works that are also aimed at general readers should be written in a style that is accessible, friendly and engaging. In my view, this is where this book misses the mark. Although I found the writing style to be authoritative, I also found it to be rather dry and awkward, due in no small part to the many very long-winded and often complex sentences. Consequently, it is very difficult to say what the book's target audience is. In my opinion, this is a work that should be studied rather than simply read for pleasure. It would likely be of interest to scholars who may be involved in research along related topics. However, I suspect that general readers, and even many history buffs like me, may find the book confusing and rather boring.
Actually, I was looking for a description of how Galileo was able to improve the telescope from 5x to 30x. There are no Glassworks in the book; no descriptions of how lenses were made. Galileo himself figures very little here: it is everybody else who had any claim to the invention of the telescope.

The horseback riding is whole body experience. This book describes how you should FEEL when you ride which is very enlightening. Knowing technique is very important but not necessarily helpful if you do not anticipate how your body must feel while doing various riding exercises. It is simply unclear. You are unable to judge what's wrong despite of your being "technically" correct (or so it seems to you). This book fills this gap beautifully. It also teaches not only how to receive energy from the horse and enjoy it but also how the horse can benefit (mentally and physically) from a good rider.Only one example. I read a lot of descriptions of what is a good half-halt and how to do it. Only after reading this book I finally FELT it. I felt how my horse re-balanced himself under me in response to my re-balancing myself. My horse is very very bouncy. By end of today's lesson I could do sitting trot on him because he collected himself considerably. It was still a little choppy but now I can see that it is at least POSSIBLE. Our circles were super (comparing :-)).I highly recommend this book. As one reader mentioned, it is mine opinion (I can be wrong) that it is not for first-time riders or vacation riders but for people who had ~10 lessons and are planning to continue riding.
Had to buy a copy to replace one from years ago. I recently came out of retirement to help my neighbor improve her skills and understanding of basic horsemanship. She had ridden for quite some time in her youth at a rental barn. This book is a classic and a necessity for anyone just starting to ride or wants to help their own balance and effectiveness no matter what discipline you ride. Sally Swift offers many ways to visualize her concepts all of which help the rider become more relaxed and balanced. I would lend a copy to all of my students (obviously not returned by my last student years ago.)
Buy this book -- if you're just starting, you'll probably get 3x more out of every hour you spend on horseback! Even if you aren't, I'm sure it's worth the $10 or so... your horse will probably thank you for it, too.I bought this just before I started riding lessons and devoured it. It's fun to read and extremely helpful. Coincidentally, on my third lesson or so, my instructor suggested that if I were to get just one riding book, I should buy this book called Centered Riding by Sally Swift... I told her I already had it, and we laughed.
The one thing I took away from this book was that it is best to ride imagining that there is a enormous spring above you causing you to sit straight. I applied this to every day life. I walked around for months pulled up by this string. And then I went for a check up at my doctor and he told me I had grown to centimeters. At the age of 50. No joke.
The best book on all things, proper and correct, in preparation for, and in the act, of riding. Have found no other succinct text, clever and thought-provoking illustrations, and factual processing. Well written, easy to understand and if you do it all to her specs, you will then have nothing but the perfect outcome for you and your horse. Bible-like, the definitive go-to book!
This is the horse riding bible. Sometimes I just open to a page to start my day with a nugget of truth. I could read it for hours. It's my favorite book. I had to buy another copy of it because I loaned mine out and the person I loaned it to wouldn't give it back until she had her own copy. This should be on all horse owner's shelves no matter what discipline.
Sally Swift makes everything so simple and easy to understand, throw out all the crap people try to teach you and go with S.S. she's got the know-how!
Anyone that wants to ride well and really desires to stay out of their horses way will enjoy and benfit from the principles Sally teaches. Her methods also have a positive crossover effect on one's posture in everyday life. This DVD and/or book will benefit Western and English riders as a "Balanced Seat" is the universal prerequisite to good riding. I had borrowed the book years ago and recently bought the DVD for my library. Because I work alone and do not have access to many qualified trainers and clinics; books and DVDs are my teachers. The DVD is good for quick "see how". The sound and picture quality of the DVD was good. I do think however, the book provides much more insight and detail. If you are a "high achiever" into detail I would get the book first. As your balance improves your horse will thank you and as we all know "if your horse ain't happy...no one's happy!"
