Thought the Quantum Thief novels the best science fiction of the past ten years or so. Bought this the second it came out. Oh no I thought as I began reading. A spy novel. And a fantasy living dead novel. Worse, as I read on, it was clear that it was an attempt at a 'literary' character driven novel. Something no one except maybe Kim Robinson in the first Mars book was ever able to bring off -- that is write a novel where the characters were close to mainstream literary strong but a novel that still had that science fiction sense of wonder that we all crave. But in the breach I found Summerland a serious page turner. Enjoyable. Easy to get through. Emotionally and politically complex. Enough sheer writing talent to make it work. But still. I hope Mr Rajaniemi gets back to writing core science fiction as I believe he is our very best living practitioner of that craft and James Joyce he will never be.
What would the World be like if the scientists in the turn of the 20th century hadn’t discovered atoms and general relativity but aether and connection to dead souls instead? A brilliant parallel universe with its own physics and laws.In the plot with spies and double agents you can never be sure of who is on who’s side. All characters have their own drivers, goals and aspirations. The book ponders what makes us do the things we do, what kind of decisions and sacrifices we are willing to make, what is our purpose in life and the purpose of life itself.
Summerland (Kindle Edition) by Hannu RajaniemiSo, no big deal right? Oh, but let's give some context, as in England in 1938. Also Franco is trying to gain control of Spain. Stalin doesn't want that. And our hero, Mrs. Rachel White, works in intelligence, and deals routinely with agents both living and dead. It's the dead ones that give her the most problems. For a number of reasons, trying to trap a traitor in her own organization is not easy. And her mother keeps annoying her from the afterlife as well. Her husband is a WWI vet who had a very rotten time of it, and now his nightmares become real and he oozes ectoplasm and stuff when he's upset. If this sounds like it's very deliciously twisty and layered, it is! The characters (living and dead) are as real as it gets, and the storyline is tight and well done. Pick it up, you will thank me later!
I feel like I wasted $14. This book had a lot of promise in the beginning that seemed to grind to a halt before picking up momentum again. But when the plot regained momentum it was no longer interesting. It had too much pseudo science and made up terminology that bogged it down. The author should have written one interesting main character with a detailed backstory instead of an interesting main character with a bland backstory and a bland  main character with an interesting backstory.Oh, and the main conflict, that the Summerland is going to be destroyed by a defector, isn't explained. I never found out how that could happen or why. But the whole book harps on it. We are told he's going to destroy it. How? I don't know. But Lennin isn't the only threat to the Summerland. And no one knows how to defeat the real threat. But it's ok because the defector chose to pass valuable information on to the government to save lives. Â
Hannu Rajaniemi imagines a world that diverged from our own, not into the brass technology of steampunk, but into a world where the dead can be communicated with by Marconi's devices, a world of ectophones, ectotanks, and spirit cages. Take that backdrop and mix it with a pre-WWII tale of espionage, and you have a story that keeps you guessing until the end. The two main characters weave a braided path through the narrative, each commanding the reader's sympathies though often appearing to be on opposing sides. The world of the spy, where nothing is what it seems, is mirrored by the world in which it is set, where our history has been turned on its ear by contact with the land of the dead, yet still manages to play out most of the conflicts that marked our history. The story is told with a minimum of explanation; one of the pleasures and one of the challenges of this book is figuring out how this world works, how it diverged from our own, and how some of our historical figures would have reacted in these game-changing circumstances.

Dr. Chuck Missler's "The Rapture" (with a provocative "Christianity's Most Preposterous Belief" teaser heading) is the best book on Bible Prophecy I have read in some time. I love prophecy and studied it for years even before becoming a Christian. Because when taken at face value and applied to events in the Middle East, Bible prophecy is irrefutable. In Chuck Missler's brilliant book, we have an instant classic of prophetic exegesis that manages, in a mere 135 pages, to cover everything a Bible-believing Christian needs to understand about the Rapture, the Great Tribulation/Wrath of God, Daniel's 70th Week, the Beast Kingdom and the final Return of Christ at Armageddon. He considers Old Testament types and anti-types, the original meaning of words, and the obvious direction history is taking us to draw reasonable and comprehensible conclusions. Those who have studied Bible Prophecy know this is a significant achievement. In fact, the Bible Prophecy book mills have ruined eschatology with a flood of books that are either incomprehensible or convoluted or re-hashes of other authors or (and worst of all) total false doctrine nonsense. Dr. Missler's genius is that by keeping to the basics, presenting prophecy in a logical sequence and leaving room for speculation on unclear possibilities, he has produced one of the best books on prophecy I have read in the last 30 years of interest in this subject. I like that he is willing to discuss the possibility of a Middle East vs European Anti-Christ scenario, accepts that Daniel's 70th week need not happen immediately after the Rapture and that the Great Tribulation is actually the poured out wrath of God and NOT the persecution and tribulation that all believers should expect to suffer if they are truly Christians. Obviously, rapture deniers, secular trolls and preterists are going to attack this book for even suggesting that the literal interpretation of scripture is the best but that is to be expected. But for all others -- especially new converts or confused older saints who want an easy, accurate yet scholarly explanation of Bible prophecy truths, I can think of no better book than this one. Buy three copies, one for you, one for a Christian who doesn't understand prophecy and another for an unbeliever who needs to be warned of the great truths of the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. God bless.
Several months ago, I asked God to help me understand the book of revelation and increase my knowledge of the bible and especially the end times and the rapture as I felt very confused with all the different things I was hearing and reading about the end. So this book was , I believe, chosen for me to read. Thank you Dr. Missler for a concise, understandable read. All my confusion is cleared and my questions answered. Everything was backed by scripture and my bible was open by my side as I studied th Is excellent book. You took something that was to me very complicated and explained it in terms that anyone could understand. God bless you and everyone connected with this.
The title seems to be a rather mischievous play on words. However, the author does a good job of analyzing and presenting eschatology in easy to understand language without getting bogged down with heavy terminology.Chuck Missler calls a spade a spade. He presents a healthy amount of both biblical and historical evidence to support his arguments. He inserts a few out-of-the-square lines of thought which don't distract but does stimulate uncommon thinking.Overall, I recommend a read, regardless of your views, this will be a refreshing and healthy read.
I appreciated the thorough research from Chuck's long background in physics and the Scriptures. Thus he can give an excellent cover of the subject of the Rapture, and shows that this is no problem to our Lord to fulfil. Having more than 60 years since passing my first exams (Lth) in theology, I can appreciate this book and have lately enjoyed another of Dr Missler's books from Amazon, 'The Trinity'.
This book provides some compelling reasons to believe in a pre-Tribulation rapture of the bride of Christ. Well-written and highly insightful, my only wish is that Dr Missler had made it longer and gone into even more depth than he did. I am more convinced now than I was before reading this that the rapture is imminent and shall occur before the Great Tribulation. This is a must-read for any Christian struggling with piecing together the mysteries of God's Word and understanding end-time events. I will be reading it again to gain more familiarity with these concepts.
This books makes a great case for pre-trib rapture. But he also tells us to do our homework and read the Scripture for ourselves. I enjoyed every word of this book. It's hard not to agree with his interpretation of prophecy. It's also nice to see the excitement and passion he puts into his work. I am buying a copy for a friend. Highly recommend this to Christians who are wanting some clarification on Revelation and Daniel.
Chuck Missler gives plenty of scripture references and defines the context surrounding each scripture to inform the reader on the subject of the rapture. He is always informative, never overly wordy. No scripture twisting to try and force a point of view that is just not supported by the Bible. He is my favorite Cristian author. The book reads faily easy to anyone from junior high school and upward and anyone would greatly benefit from this.
If you have an open heart, search the scriptures; Jesus is coming again to claim by removal His bride, the church. This short book guides you to relevant passages that clearly indicate His return may be morning, noon, or night; we who know Him must be ready for whenever that timing is! Oh, looking for a date? Read some other book. This one just encourages us to always be ready.

Luckily i had done iOS and Android natively so i could figure most the missing code, but if you are new, you will struggle and spend your time on a goose chase. You can see the provided code sample are different from the code in the book.

This is the best book on Mississippi I have read on the period when I was born. Many things have changed since then. A modern book of value is Dispatches From Pluto. They examine the complexities of Mississippi totally misunderstood by other sections of the country. We have per capita more elected and appointed African American public officials than any other state. But are constantly accused of white supremacy and suppressing the African Vote.
Harper Lee, Truman Capote, Margaret Mitchell, Kate Stone, Walker Percy, the writer's uncle...if you would know the living South and southerners, forget the Yankee Press and their take on the po' trash living in this wonderland of triumph and, sometimes, tragedy. The good news is that when Yankees describe us, no one wants to crowd in and we rather like that. This is a compelling book about life near the Mississippi River,it's beauty, culture, and fierce rampages. I love this book...it is a slow read allowing time for contemplation. Perfect reading in a chair beside the fireplace, a bed placed near a window, or just recovering from whatever life has thrown at you. Great writing!
While the chapters on race relations made me most uncomfortable I do know that the author was a man of his time. My father came from the same Deep South and I know he treated all men with dignity. Therefore, Although it will be offensive to many , I judge the book has insights worth reading. The beautifully written passages could not help but delight. The turns of phrase, and brilliant descriptions of his inner thoughts and outer landscapes are sheer poetry!Highly recommend
I first heard of the Percy family at a very young age from my grandmother Helen Mariah Finley Holmes who grew up in Greenville. Much later, one Summer at Sewanee, got to know one of the Percy clan, an excellent pianist, on a more personal level. If you're interested in Greenville and the Delta, and you must be because you're reading this, you probably know about Harriet Blanton Theobald, my grandmother's great-grandmother. Our family still had a home and close ties to Greenville when I was growing up. And my grandmother still owned a few parcels of land. William Alexander Percy's account of a changing Mississippi presents a cultured view of a changing way of life, a Mississippi few now know. The Delta has changed. When my mother died, we sold Rialto Plantation just outside of Yazoo City... we needed the money and couldn't afford the equipment costs. We're not so different even now... everything of value changes with time.
There have been several excellent reviews of this book. I agree with most of them. This book is worth reading even if only as an exercise in literary appreciation. There was once a time, Camelot I suppose, when people actually did think and speak with poise, elegance and most impressively, wit. I value the works of D. K. Chesterton for the same reasons. Percy certainly fits that mold.I, like Nolan Bond (see his review), am also descended from those red-neck hill people that Percy puts firmly on the bottom of the social ladder. I am old enough to know that they possessed many of the same values and qualities he did though without the aristocratic poise. My Dad, Grand-father and Great Grand father would have been tolerated by his family but never quite accepted as equals. However, what Percy does is so solidly evoke the admirable qualities of a life which is intent upon transcending the vulgar, that even his elitism is charming. His remembrances of his father are so vivid and so superior to the statement of his own life, that I can admire his dad even where I just chuckle at Percy himself. But you have to let that go. It is the wit that makes the book worth buying. The capacity to use the language as it ought to be used, understated when most deadly, evocative when most descriptive, charming throughout, which makes one yearn to have one more real conversation before death and boredom actually prevail.Percy is without illusion about himself. He is fearless in his appreciation of those qualities transmitted to himself as well as in his own failure to rise to the nobility they require. He never matches his dad, in his own eyes or otherwise. But along the way, he reminds us that poverty is not impediment to quality, and that true freedom begins with an internal conviction. Percy does not hesitate to consider that some men are superior to others - in that he was free of certain bonds which enslave us. He was thereby able to transcend all cultures and be at home, and appreciative, in them all.It is a life worth living, even if it wasn't always comfortable.
Whether or not you agree with all of the sentiments in the book, anyone serious about his or her writing should not miss the opportunity to read an author gifted with outstanding imagery ability. His descriptions of the South in which he grew up put you right there at the scene. Like many southern authors he is a bit flowery, but in general, the pros far outweigh the cons. People who want to bury books like this are the same type who want to ban "Huckleberry Finn" from school libraries. Wishing the past had not existed is a poor substitute for learning from it. I find books like this instructive, in that you get much more of an honest, warts and all portrayal of life as it used to be.

Review
“[T]he best education in grand strategy available in a single volume . . . a long walk with a single, delightful mind . . . On Grand Strategy is a book that should be read by every American leader or would-be leader.” — John Nagl, Wall Street Journal “A remarkably erudite volume…[that] renders nuanced verdicts on an eclectic cohort of thinkers, writers, monarchs and conquerors…Gaddis has indisputably earned the right to plow different fields of historical inquiry, which he does in On Grand Strategy with self-evident glee and peripatetic curiosity.” —Washington Post “Thought-provoking…The approach is highly idiosyncratic and the structure loose; it has something of the feel of a personal manifesto or intellectual memoir.” —Weekly Standard“[An] eminently readable book by a master historian…It is a brilliant book—learned, seductively written, deep.” —The New Criterion “Lively…Gaddis concludes with an invaluable warning that true morality embraces neither messianic interventionism nor the quest for utopianism…Instead, ethical leadership pursues the art of the possible for the greater (not the greatest) good…On Grand Strategy is many things—a thoughtful validation of the liberal arts, an argument for literature over social science, an engaging reflection on university education and some timely advice to Americans that lasting victory comes from winning what you can rather than all that you want.” —The New York Times Book Review “An extraordinary treatise on the need to teach the principles of sound strategy to today’s leaders…The book…is a rich one. It makes sense of our world, but is also capable of beautifully crafted pithy historical judgments…It is a book that cares about liberty, choice and a moral compass, that warns against the hubris of an angry Bonaparte on the turn in a Russian winter, against leaders who do not listen or learn. A training manual for our troubled times.” —The Times (UK)“A fine summary of the complex concepts explored in [Gaddis’s] Grand Strategy seminar, full of vivid examples of leadership and strategic thinking, from the Persian king Xerxes to Churchill’s and Roosevelt’s WWII strategies…Gaddis brings a deep knowledge of history and a pleasingly economical prose style to this rigorous study of leadership.” —Publishers Weekly “A capacious analysis of how leaders make strategic decisions…A lively, erudite study of the past in service of the future.” —Kirkus Reviews On The Cold War: A New History “Outstanding . . . The most accessible distillation of that conflict yet written.” - The Boston Globe “Energetically written and lucid, it makes an ideal introduction to the subject.” - The New York Times “A fresh and admirably concise history . . . Gaddis’s mastery of the material, his fluent style and eye for the telling anecdote make his new work a pleasure.” - The Economist On George F. Kennan: An American Life Winner of the Pulitzer Prize ''Magisterial . . . [Kennan] bids fair to be as close to the final word as possible on one of the most important, complex, moving, challenging, and exasperating American public servants . . . We can be grateful to John Lewis Gaddis for bringing Kennan back to us, thoughtful, human, self-centered, contradictory, inspirational—a permanent spur as consciences are wont to be. Masterfully researched, exhaustively documented, Gaddis' moving work gives us a figure with whom, however one might differ on details, it was a privilege to be a contemporary.'' - Henry A. Kissinger, New York Times Book Review “[A] first-rate biography . . . Kennan's life maps right onto twentieth-century political history, and no one is better qualified than Gaddis to lead the way through it . . . Gaddis has written with care and elegance, and he has produced a biography whose fineness is worthy of its subject.” –The New Yorker

I wish I could take Yale history professor’s grand strategy course. Reading his book is the next best option. At the heart of Gaddis’ book is Isaiah Berlin’s parable of the hedgehog and the fox. Simply put a successful strategist has to have the strategic focus of a hedgehog with the tactical flexibility of a fox. The strategist can’t view evolving events through the lens of a fixed ideological view and must be flexible enough to adapt to the changing environment. The enemies of flexibility are ego and hubris.Gaddis teaches us that there has to be a relationship between means and ends. As the Rolling Stones taught us we can’t always get what we want. He continually invokes Carl von Clausewitz’s maxims especially that war is the extension of politics by more violent means. As such he understands Bismarck’s view the “politics is the art of the possible. So too is strategy.Gaddis’ work here is also a paean to the liberal arts. He brings out the strategic thinking of Tolstoy, Saint Augustine and my personal hero Niccolo Machiavelli. He prefers intuitive thinkers over experts the latter of whom are more locked into rigid thinking. His favorite American strategists are Lincoln and Franklin D. Roosevelt. Lincoln understands how to use his technological and manpower superiority over the South by aggressively attacking in the Mississippi Valley and Roosevelt for understanding that the axis would be defeated by the factories of Detroit and California. Gaddis goes overboard, in my opinion, in giving too much credit for Roosevelt’s 1933 diplomatic recognition of the Soviet Union as a harbinger of the World War II alliance with Stalin against Germany and Japan. As an aside I wish Gaddis would have discussed the grand strategies of Bismarck, Lenin and Stalin. All three were masters of tactical flexibility with very strong strategic goals. So for those of us who can’t take Gaddis’ class, read his “On Grand Strategy.â€
I purchased this book because I enjoyed the authors previous book on the Cold War. This is a very readable, breezy and enjoyable book. Its like taking a Yale seminar-you can almost see the author pacing around the room, connecting events and writers across time and situations to make his point. The take-home message of the book is that grand strategy has to balance focus (a "hedgehog" approach) and creativity (a "fox" approach), and success requires attention to both means and ends. These aren't the most profound insights, but the historical examples were fun to read, and I enjoyed how the author links people, events and ideas to make his point.
I had looked forward to reading this book. Unfortunately, it was nothing like I had hoped. Other reviewers have used a number of unflattering adjectives to describe Gaddis' writing. I would describe it as pedantic and quite poorly written. I could not keep from being amazed by the poor quality of the work given the professor's position at Yale. One reviewer of the book wrote something on the order of this being a Yale course in a book. I think the faculty of Yale should take that as a slap in the face.Gaddis' writing here seems just short of a stream of consciousness; in many instances it nearly takes the form, as there are a number of sentence fragments, especially at the beginning of sections within the chapters. He meanders around a bit through various eras of history driving toward what I hoped would be some sort of meaningful result, something that would redeem the time I spent reading the 313 pages. That result did not come. There is minimal cohesion within the text, save for the strategic difference between foxes and hedgehogs. Were he to have simply sent out a tweet that said, "Plan ahead like hedgehogs. Mind the details like foxes," he would've conveyed a meaningful point, saved us all time and money, and accomplished it in under 140 characters. In the end, the best part of the book was that it ended. The grand strategy for this book is to avoid it.
Professor Gaddis is a wonderful writer, a superior mind and able story teller. So it sad to say that this work is not up to his previous standards. Though there is an overarching concept for Grand Strategy, is gets lost in vast verbiage, esoteric approaches and an exercise in name dropping. This is a twenty page magazine article that the author must have had a good time riffing on. If you have a lot of time to spend following along the path, and then losing the path, and trying to reacquire it, and having done so only to discovered the path you are on barely resembles that upon which you began, this book is for you.
Like most of the other readers, I did also enjoy reading this book, and upon finishing it, I would say I had a pretty good idea of what a truly outstanding strategist is. The examples were carefully chosen, and framing everything in the metaphor of the hedgehog and the fox gave a unifying theme to the book. Surprised to see Augustine in there, and also Metternich omitted. His evaluation of Napoleon is very interesting indeed, and requires reading the whole book to understand. My only complaint is the prose: sometimes a little convolute, and delivered as someone thinking out loud, like a lecturer. Not always easy to follow. All in all, a great book though.
From ancient up into current times the author writes an eye opening look into grand strategy and what it takes to balance power by explaining how grand strategy ties strategy and tactics, centralized and decentralized thinking and leadership as they work towards the outcomes we seek in today’s fast changing world. I highly recommend this book.

A Day Which Will Live in Infamy is how POTUS Franklin Delano Roosevelt described the dastardly attack by Japan on the American fleet at Pearl Harbor on Sunday December 7, 1941. That attack (reminiscent of the surprise attack by Japan on the Russian fleet in 1905) marked United States entry into the worst war in history. Dr. William K. Klingaman a Virginia professor tells the story of the American homefront in the first year of the war. What kind of America would the 21st century traveler encounter in time travel back to that tragic year?a. America was a segregated society. African Americans suffered widespread discrimination throughout the South and the nation. The Armed Forces were segregated and many blacks were denied membership in trade unions and denied good jobs in the defense industry.b. Japanese Americans were forced from their homes on the West Coast and forced to live in concentration camp type facilities.c. America had an army of only 250,000 troops before the big buildup with the coming of the draft.d. Foods like sugar were strictly rationed and such items as tires, nylons, suits and other clothing was difficult to obtain.e. The first year of the war was very bleak as Singapore, Guam and many American outposts in the Far East were overrun by the Japanese.f. Curfews were instituted in many cities and locales and wild rumors of invasion were bruited about in the land. The author covers many other changes in American life during this period. One is thankful that we modern Americans do not have to suffer through the hardships of the World War II era. This is an excellent history of the homefront during the early days of World War II and may be read as a way to learn about this time. Recommended.
Author Klingaman is to be commended for relying upon contemporary media reports and his extensive bibliography rather than the nostalgia-tinged reminiscences of those who lived through this era. His review of the year beginning with Pearl Harbor shows that the American people of that time were neither better nor worse than those living in today's turbulent society. Bigotry, racism, greed, and incompetence reared their ugly heads in a nation ill-prepared to wage war in 1942. That our country not only endured but prevailed is a comfort. Readers desiring a view of history unburnished by the patina of legend will enjoy this book. All citizens would benefit from pondering the halting footprints left behind by the passing of the "Greatest Generation".
This is an excellent work which addressed the state of America just before the onset of WWII and the events following which includes the years 1941 and 1942. The emphasis is on the home front although it does give a brief history of the immediate cause of the war; and the “Darkest Year†is a good description of the mess we found ourselves in at that time. At that time; a time where the country was going through a strong isolation period as it does from time to time, we were completely unprepared as to our military and indeed, our national attitude. Folks, we were on the verge of loosing the war!The author writes in a in a fashion which outlines perfectly the division in our country and our and how we overcame them. The book is well researched and written in a fashion which is nonacademic which is rather refreshing. Our country went through many changes in many way during this relatively short time period and gives us come idea of how we got to where we are today. It also gives one hope that despite these wretched time we are going through now that there is hope...yes we still have a strong country despite all of it and I am still hopeful.
Americans in 1941-1942 were in a state of "it can't happen here and many innocent lives were lost
Of all the books written about World War II, how many focus on the home front? I've never read one. William K. Klingaman's book focuses on the pivotal 1941-42 year in which Americans at home began to realize the enormity and far-reaching implications of the war. His prodigious research turns up both telling statistics and man-on-the-street opinion.Until reading this book, I basically had the whitewashed "Greatest Generation" picture that implies everyone, both military and civilian, pulled together and willingly sacrificed to win the war. Mr. Klingaman's book disabuses us of that notion. In the year following December 7, 1941, Americans increasingly came to resent government interference in their lives, not really resigned to the inevitability of war yet. They resisted sugar and gas rationing, lying about their need if they thought it would get them more. They hoarded anything they thought might be next on the ration list. They drained their bank accounts and stuffed their money under mattresses, fearing the government would commandeer their assets. They bristled at edicts that dictated what they could and couldn't wear -- the government slimmed down suit and dress profiles to use less fabric, and nobody was happy about it. Writers who toured the country (Alistair Cooke... who knew?!?) found people going about their daily lives, concerned only about their own affairs and apathetic about world events. It wasn't until the country began to be emptied of its young men that the reality of it finally registered. Also unknown to me was that in this first year following the attack on Pearl Harbor, it looked like the Allies might not win the war. They were beaten by the Japanese in battle after battle and by the Germans with their U-boats, losing men, ships, planes and territory at an alarming rate. Americans had to rethink everything they believed about America. "It has been a year in which the American people have come to realize that no nation is unbeatable," the author quotes Hanson Baldwin, the military editor of the New York Times. As journalism is my first love, I thrilled to all the quotes from the writers of the day -- Ernie Pyle, H.L Mencken, S.J. Perelman, Walter Lippmann, Adela Rogers St. John, and so many others. The tenor of the times comes across vividly through their observations. I can't wait to have my father read this book, so I can ask him about how the war was for him at home on my grandparents' farm as a 14-year-old boy in 1942.

I found the book to be enjoyable and just as entertaining as the Movie. Both book and Movie are compelling with intense drama from beginning to end. The engaging story tugs at the heart, and the entire colorful cast of characters in the film did a great job of performance as we follow Charlie's footsteps into a circle of friends to compensate the emotional trauma in his life. After seeking therapy for his social problems, he meets two friends and is taught how to party. Every character has problems from a troubled past, some learn to cope and others cannot get past a tragic event. The themes for this movie is finding love, being accepted, learning to cope, and the true meaning of friendship. Many viewers will be able to relate to the emotional trauma, and some viewers may find it difficult to relate if flashbacks of a troubled past are too disturbing. Overall, the characters light up the screen, and the heartfelt story keeps your attention throughout. Highly Entertaining from beginning to end!
I am 74 years old. The world is different now; there are more risks and more choices than when I was 15, but this movie reminded me of what it felt like to be 15 and 16 in 1954 and 1955. In those days homework was accompanied by radio with Rock and Roll music thanks to Alan Fried, Ranger hockey against Maurice Richard, and Gene Shepard, the best story teller of all time. Most of us had after school jobs which gave us enough spending money to begin making choices independent of our parents, and every day we left home and entered the world alone, with very little confidence but with the hope that everything was going to work out. Watching Charlie going through his day, observing the antics of his friends and trying to make sense of it all, brought tears to my eyes. The beauty of the movie is that it captures the universal experience of adolescence, and fortunately, as difficult as the experience may be, just like Charlie, most of us make it through.
The Perks Of Being A Wallflower is a truly moving story about Charlie, a freshman in high school, who is by no means popular. He is very shy, but that all comes down to a mental issue that occurred because of something that happened when he was younger, which you will get the gist of later on in the book. The author, Stephen Chbosky, has plotted this story very well. It isn't your average book set up - Charlie writes letters to an anonymous reader known as 'Friend'. Charlie tells this person everything he does and feels, who he meets and loves. Charlie meets two outgoing outsiders that are much cooler than him, but they accept him and he finally feels included. Patrick, a gay, happy and outgoing teen, and Sam, a beautiful young woman, introduce Charlie to a new world filled with sex, drugs and The Rocky Horror Picture Show. They also show Charlie the power of music and Charlie becomes more and more music savvy. He particularly likes The Smiths and the song ‘Asleep’. Charlie goes on a rollercoaster ride full of emotions, and learns that he has the greatest friends he could wish for. If you read this story you will laugh, cry and keep reading on. It is not to be missed. Charlie will show you that high school can be enjoyed if you have the right friends and becoming a teenager isn't as scary as you think, even though it seems that way. Although, I could not relate to any of the characters in the book, it was interesting to learn about what other people might be going through. This book really opened my eyes, and made me realize that people might seem fine on the outside, but there are often bigger things going on in their lives. Charlie's story touched me, because I feel like many authors don't like to talk about the things that Charlie went through as a kid. It was a refreshingly new way of writing. I would most definitely recommend this book to a friend because I think that everyone would enjoy reading this book. If I could change something about this book, I wouldn’t change anything. Although some parts were sad, I think that the book wouldn't be half as good if anything was changed in it.  All in all, The Perks of Being a Wallflower is an easy and fun read, and I highly recommend picking it up.
