My husband suffered a stroke in August. I never had heard the word Aphasia before. I was told that with his stroke he has Aphasia. I needed to find out all I could on what this is. This book has been excellent in helping me help my husband. Please learn all you can about Aphasia. It will help you along with this patient who has Aphasia.
The content was okay- but the construction of the book was awful. Pages cut off weird, and uneven. I kept it, but am not too happy with it.
I really like this book for speech therapy in rehab settings. It's one of my favorites. Some of the information is similar to other books, but it has new information too. It's great to have so many ideas in one book.
My dad had a stroke a couple of months back, which resulted in him having aphasia. Unfortunately, Medicare only covered so many speech therapy sessions. I found this on Amazon and noticed it was the same style as what the therapist used, so I purchased it. It works great for my dad and would highly recommend it.

I bought this book for myself as I had a stroke 7 yrs. ago and aphasia is one of my side effects from it.PT & OT never addressed this issue so I was left with dealing with it on my own. I had a tough time finding books, even games, to assist me in working with this "disorder".When I found out that there was help available, I was so happy. FINALLY!! Someone who truly gets what stroke survivors have to live with. I am starting off slow with certain exercises in the workbook plus a good friend of mine, who's a math teacher, gave me a website to check out for improving math skills (another side effect from the stroke).This author did an amazing job and I would highly recommend this book to anybody who has aphasia. I plan to share this with my neurologist so he can tell his patients about it.And yes, the exercises are easy, so don't worry about it.
For helping my wife with aphasia , this workbook is the best I've found. Also speech therapist at home visit, for wife's therapy had the same book. Showed me that I made a good choice in purchasing this item! Very satisfied, results in progress in speech and cognition. Thank You

Thank you for your wonderful book. I enjoyed it immensely. Your look at the slave trade from the point of view of the commoner IS much needed and provides lots more data on a subject that is often described and presented in ONLY the top down, objective, sterile, them vs. us manner. The information from the bottom, in my mind, is richer. It allows everyday people the luxury of participating in the discussion. They can't say, "I don't know," "I was not involved." Few are correct. When evil is around, all are impacted, then and now. The Transatlantic Slave Trade was that type of evil. Your representation of it is much needed.I am only now in 2015 reading your book. I am sure your thinking has deepened from your experiences of traveling the slave route AND meeting the descendants. As a black American, I too experience the lingering, un-articulated feelings of "alien," "stranger" in the midst of everybody. Like you, I watch many people, of all races and colors in the US and else where, try to separate them self from the slave trade. It was not me, it was my ancestors, "they say." Your work allows ALL to grapple with the visual and non-visual clues in our midst that the hurt, pain and longing of "losing your mother" is very real and present in contemporary life. We are nowhere near post-racial.
I don't know where to start. I accept that I am African. Its my DNA. Its my genetics. Its why I have a high risk of sickle cell, high blood pressure, ect. Its why I have kinky hair. Its why I am made for the sun. I've felt so lost and confused. Presently, I despise the hyphenated American attached to my African. Why? Because I feel mistreated. I see my people getting robbed of life and no convictions. We have the same issues here or anywhere in the world. You can argue with another person over what side of the city they live on. Or debate with a Native American over whos history was the worst. Its no different then our brothers and sisters on the Continent. Its hard for us to comprehend that they will not get it. Nor will we get their pain. Maybe an understanding or tolerance but its life. You were blessed to return to the Continent. Although you visited other neighboring countries, I felt like Africa was being seen as a country and not an actual Continent where millions of variois ethnic groups, cultures, and way of life of people. Its not fair to generalize. Its so sad that so called "Black America" is still having identity issues. You made the DNA testing sound as if it was useless. I know for a fact people have discovered their biological parents, siblings, and yes even their families on the Continent. Whos to say you even descended from Ghanians or the next? If you do fine, but now all of us do. Some of us coule be Nigerian, Senegalese, Congo.. and more. To me, Ghana has gotten much better. Its a win win situation for all. I'd say... its like hey let me promote unity and tourism and I'll help you dual citizenship (Right to Abode) as well as affordable land and more to start your own businesses. Lets not act like countries were built on everyone being gentle and simpled minded. Maybe its the hustler in me. As long as you don't harm me, we are good. In fact, the African Caribeans were recently granted Ghanian Citizeship. So it must not be that bad. I'm seeing younger and younger going to Ghana. There is also more countries to experience. You may not like Ghana.. but you may love Congo or something. Thank you so much for writing this book. I learned a lot and I am grateful. You know if we can call someone Asian or realize that Whites proudly boast about being European (celebrating Irish heritage), and even having the world speaking European languages (English and Spanish) due to their colonization and supremacy to divide and conquer... we must not be Anti-African. Its sad.. and its due to self-hate in our communities. You are so quick to call yourself a social constructed label to separate yourselves from being African. I'm talking to who ever reads this. There is nothing wrong with having your cultures.. but be real with yourselves. Stop denying being African. Thats your genetics. You can't change that based off a "race" aka color and a nationality aka geography. Blessings to all. If you want to look for your Continental families. Definitely try Ancestry, 23andMe, FTDNA, and upload to GED match. There is a google chrome scanner for Ancestry to even create an excel for you to find them. They would love to get to know you. Look at the reunion videos online. Join the DNA african descendants FB group and watch your heart opens up even more for your beautiful African selves.
This is a tough book to read. It should be required reading in every American high school. The author evokes the emotional and physical toll the Atlantic slave trade had on those who were subjected to it in a way I have never experienced before.Having spent time in Ghana and been fascinated by those hulking slave castles, I am further haunted by the deepened understanding of what that experience was like for the imprisoned.The knowledge I have gained and the searing pain I have felt reading this book will never leave me.
There is something about the way she writes that just has a way of piercing your heart at its core. Her writing is honest and straightforward. i feel like she wrote this book for me that's how deeply I connected with it. As a daughter of the diaspora, a daughter of the enslaved, i appreciate this book so much. No, my wounds aren't healed but I feel like I can move on to healing and take the next generation on to healing and moving forward with the knowledge that I have gained from this book. The ancestors would be proud.
Saidiya weaves a compelling story of the search for one's identity while trying to make sense of the horrors of the slave trade. Her vivid descriptions of the infamous slave castles, combined with a uncanny ability to put you in chains with the slaves waiting for the slavers, create vivid mental images that simultaneously make you want to put the book down and keep reading. Her material is well researched and moves you back and forth from the present to the past to the present, all within the context of a search we all need to take.
a powerful, haunting book the author takes us on her painful journey shedding a lot of light on the painful and cruel institution of slavery in Africa and without.
So much information on Africa but this is a must read. The author engages you with the characters expectations and then her reality of Africa. Love it

In my opinion, Nancy Silverton's culinary talent is unassailable. I have never had a meal at any of her restaurants that was anything but perfect. So when I had dinner at Mozza Osteria not long ago, I knew I had to get this book. I am not disappointed. The gorgeous photos of the many of the dishes perfectly convey the focus on flavor and presentation that make dining at Mozza such a wonderful experience.As with any restaurant cookbook, there are recipes here that I will probably never make because of the many steps involved in the preparation. However, there are many, many more recipes in this book that are within the reach of home cooks and kitchens than almost any other restaurant cookbook I own. The pizzas are relatively simple, and explode with flavor, and many of the entree recipes include the side dish in the preparation. Wine pairings are included for most recipes.As always, the success of the recipes here relies on the ingredients, a point which Silverton stresses again and again. Some of the ingredients are hard to find, but worth seeking out for the best results. In that regard, the Mozzarella Bar recipes prove to be the most challenging in the book, even though they are among the easiest. I have tried too many brands of burrata to count, most of which I have discarded after one bite. I personally would not bother to make the burrata recipes unless I could get it from one of Silverton's recommended suppliers, Gioia. To do otherwise would yield disappointing results no matter what the other ingredients are.I don't have a problem, as one reviewer does, with the substituted pizza dough. Silverton explains the reason why, and as a long-time fan of her LaBrea Bakery breads and baked goods, I accept the reason for the substitution.I highly recommend this book for the recipes and as a lasting souvenir of the all too ephemeral experience of having dinner at Mozza.
I'm extremely impressed with the book. First, I live in LA and am a huge fan of both Pizzeria Mozza and Osteria Mozza, so I already know I like most of the recipes. Second, I appreciate the fact that these recipes are truly different (sometimes in subtle ways) than the 'standard' versions of the dishes presented. Example: the meatballs. Mozza has wonderful meatballs, and you could spend a lot of time trying to figure out what is special about them. It turns out that the answer is quite simple: they contain no beef, but they do contain ground pancetta, so the meats are veal, pork, and pancetta. This may not sound like a big difference, but I strongly recommend trying the recipe and promise that you will have a hard time going back to regular meatballs. Third, I like the intellectual honesty of the book. Example: the Torta Della Nonna contains three cheeses, Philadelphia Cream Cheese, Coach Farms Goat Cheese, and mascarpone. This is a very non-traditional combination, but most important, it is exactly the kind of thing done in a restaurant kitchen (ie combining commodity cheese like Philadelphia with high end Goat Cheese) that most of the time no one would admit to in a book. How many times have I bought a restaurant cookbook where it is glaringly obvious the recipes bear no resemblance to what is actually done in the restaurant? Not so with this one. The exceptions, where they exist, are well specified. Fourth, these are simple recipes that pretty much anyone with a moderate level of cooking experience could make (possibly with some artistic license, for example not making the pasta by hand as it's recommended), but ones that have enough twists and changes in them that an experienced chef is sure to learn some exciting new flavor combinations. Fifth, the details behind each recipe are there for people who want them. Example: one of my favorite Osteria Mozza dishes is the orecchiette with rapini and fennel sausage. Most books would just call for 'fennel sausage' in the ingredients when in fact the specific fennel sausage is really key to the dish (and it's an excellent one). In this book, the actual fennel sausage recipe is there -- of course it's up to you whether or not you want to go to the trouble of making it. Bottom line - I have a huge cookbook collection. While I enjoy thumbing through most of them, this is one of the few that I will actually make a lot of stuff from on a regular basis. Highly recommended, especially for those who can't drive a few miles to eat at the restaurants in person.
Nancy Silverton is a fabulous chef that I have followed for years. Her food is exquisite and her cookbooks are beautiful.I fell in love with the pictures in this cookbook long before I cooked a single recipe but, in cooking many of them, I was not disappointed.I have used numerous of the recipes in this book and each and every one of them is well-written and easy to follow and execute. They all turn out really well and are super tasty.I recently had the opportunity to dine at Mozza and was thrilled to see many of the dishes in the book were still on the menu and they tasted just like the recipes I'd been following...although so much better at the restaurant with Nancy cooking them instead of me. ;-)This is one of my favorite cookbooks and go-to for dinner parties.Victoria Allmanauthor: A Chef's Journey with Her Captain
This cookbook really needs more photos to show each dish. Trying to plate properly isn't so easy. Plus, we all eat w/our eyes first, and not seeing the chef's final presentation really is a buzz kill in feeling inspired to make the dish.
I love and share the few recipes I've tried. We had fun with their pizza dough. My favorite recipe is Peperonata with Ricotta Crostoni. I eat it with everything! I will try more recipes, because they are tasty.
Wow. I mean. Wow. She takes time to translate to the home kitchen and is very thorough. If you are looking for quick 30 minute recipes. Stick to putanesca. If you want that truly rich flavor that separates good and great and are willing to invest the time, then buy this book.

The Diaries of Adam and Eve and Other Stories is an utter delight to read. What a gift that great Southern gentleman, Mark Twain had! I enjoyed reading his work so much that it inspired me to write a little playlet and produce it before an audience who also found it vastly amusing-- according to the strength of their laughter.I highly recommend this Twain book for anyone wanting to smile.
I liked the Diaries of Adam and Eve. It is a humorous short story that gave the first man and woman a personality that differs from the well known bible version of them. Adam is annoyed by Eve, at first, and Eve trys to figure out why. This version is slightly different than other versions in the fact that it doesn't have some excerpts that other versions do, but I used it for school work so this version was just fine. I'd definitely reccomend this book to someone who'd like a laugh.
The Diaries are charming and endearing. They are followed by a few short stories of a very different genre - not really dark but sardonic. I would suggest the Diaries Annotated, however, since this version of their diaries is quite short.
This was wonderful. I laughed so hard with Adam and Eve in their conversations. My friend bought it after she read my copy. My minister liked it too. Mark Twain is a wonderful writer.
I don't know if the Diaries of Adam and Eve are well-known among Twain's works, but the works in this book are wonderful--witty, touching, and memorable. A great read!Kathy

Tuvia Tenenbom, the author of three bestsellers in a row, is a journalist, dramatist, and the founder of the Jewish Theater of New York. Tuvia studied for his doctorate in English literature at St. John's University, earned his MFA in playwriting at CUNY-Brooklyn, received his BS in mathematics and computer science from Touro, and finished his rabbinical studies in Jerusalem. This is the third book of Tuvia's that i have read and by far enjoyed the most.Under all the layers of PC and "good manners" lies the truth. Tuvia Tenenbom has that innate quality of being able to ask anything, say anything without guile. He has an almost childlike appearance & naiveté which disarms all those he interacts with. He is razor sharp however with insights and honesty that are rare and hard to find in this day & age. Yes, truth hurts but it will also set us free. This book is a must for all humans, jewish or not.
Who is this chameleon when not pretending to be someone else? Jewish? Does he ever go to synagogue when not required for an interview? German? Does it express itself other than his choice of beverage? American? After decades can he define it? Is he proud to be an Amrican citizen?Superficial and depressing in the way his earlier 'Catch the Jew' wasn't. It offers no different options even in its conclusion. For example, if determining parentage percentage to be an Indian is racist what alternative does he propose. Keep in mind Israel demands at least 25% for entrance as a Jew and most Halacha (Jewish law) 50%.Tenenbom (Christmas tree?) is always folksy and entertaining but the 'Lies they tell' is not his best work.
To begin with, I have read this and two other books by Mr. Tenenbom in which he engages in first-person antagonizing of his interviewees. His methods are provocative and somewhat unethical, as he frequently lies about his national and religious identity in order to get his subjects' truest feedback. I have serious questions about whether the people he is interviewing are giving their truest answers, or the one they believe are likeliest to satisfy the correspondent. For that alone, his books should be banished, or at least get no more than a single star.THAT said, the books are extremely entertaining, and the author should get double-stars for his willingness to tackle identity politics in a depth that no one else seems to address. The truths he unearths about human nature are achingly painful to observe, which means they have the ring of truth. All people, all relationships, all families, all nations, all religions and all ethnicities eventually have to deal with "membership" -- who is IN, who is OUT; who belongs, and who does not. We establish various boundaries for ourselves in interesting and contradictory ways. For Tenenbom this inconsistency sparks ridiculous outrage, which is itself entertaining to read.For example, in the United States, our constitution establishes that an American is someone born here, or to an American parent, or naturalizes. In Judaism, we are members of the tribe if our mother is Jewish, or if we "naturalize" through conversion. For certain native American groups, membership follows 1/16th "blood." In Germany, there are people whose grandparents and parents were born there, but have not been able to become citizens. It makes sense, in principal, that groups are entitled to determine who does, or does not belong. Yet for some reason, the native American tribal membership pattern is outrageous to Tenenbom. This is ridiculous in itself -- but because it is true to his own personality, it is interesting to read.This book deals with the intricacies, conflicts, and ridiculousness of American identity politics. Written just as Donald Trump was about to be elected president of the United States, and this may date the book, somewhat. But as of THIS review being written, when women are marching in defense of their rights, and Nazis are carrying citronella torches and guns through the streets, when the AltRight and the AltLeft are looking more and more like one another, this book is painfully, heartbreakingly relevant.
This book is written in a very serious vein but at the same time is laced with a certain amount of humour. There are a number of chapters which brings a smile to the reader.The author writes in the first person and relates the meetings that he had with Americans of all classes – from the wealthy to the poor as well as with black and white Americans. He had travelled the length and breadth of the US and visited most of the states. Each state seems to be an island within itself and the people living there were interviewed by the author. All the interviews were spontaneous and in many cases surprising. Tuvia Tenenbom kept an open mind during all his interviews and has the gift of gaining a certain amount of trust from the people he interviewed that allowed them to open up and express personal views and life experiences they had, which they kept secret even from their closest friends and relatives.All his the interviews are anecdotal and laced with cynicism when it comes to judging his interviewees. He always introduced himself as a journalist with another identity, never saying that he is Jewish and that he is from Germany in most cases.Many of the people that he had interviewed seemed pleasant enough until he asked them about their views on climate change, Israel and the Palestinians. Those who were against climate change were, strangely enough, also against Israel concerned about the Palestinians. Some even expressed anti-Jewish sentiments.The book is quite a fast read, entertaining and humorous in parts. It is deserving of four stars and I would recommend it to those who are interested in the heterogeneous population of the US and its characters.
The honesty of Tuvia is admirable, no PC obfuscation for him. He is a courageous investigator not afraid diving into the darkest parts of a city to interview his subjects. Apparently he has an uncanny talent for connecting with everyone. The style in which he tells the story however is somewhat erratic, he jumps from here to there both geographically as well as informatively, which takes away from the subject he wants to depict. An entertaining read but not a deep one.
I wish I could write like Tuvya - because if I could, I would write a better book. His generalizations on the basis of single experiences are not always warranted. As a foreigner to the American scene he does see things that Americans tend to overlook, but he doesn't really have a clue about what makes the USA tick. He obviously has problems with hsi background. He is not comfortable with completely abandoning his Jewish background, nor does he seem entirely happy with permanently leaving his native Israel. His pretending to be a German does not quite come off. So what is he?
