Each chapter is maybe 5-6 pages long, but will leave you deep in thought, enabling you to see God as you never thought possible.After having been through the series, Behold Your God, our men's group followed up this excellent teaching with The Knowledge of the Holy. After reading just a few chapters, it leads you to a realization, as Tozer teaches, that the purest way to God is through faith and love, in real relationship, and not through the intellect. Because man is a finite being, earth bound and given to his own reconceived notions of God, we are likely to build idolatrous views of God in the mind and intellect. God is all loving, and because He is, He desires to be in intimate relationship with each one of us. Once we undertake such a pursuit, God takes you on a spiritual journey that will last a lifetime. Love the Lord your God and pursue Him only. Chapter 21, on the Holiness of God, could be one of his best.
I'm a Th.M. moving toward the Ph.D in theology. So needless to say I have read and own my fair share of Systematic Theologies and/or volumes specifically dedicated to the Doctrine of God. Even among all those offerings by some lofty scholars of theology, Tozer's seemingly diminutive book is probably worth more to me than all the others combined. His take on the attributes of God is extremely insightful. It is practical enough for devotion material, yet intellectual enough for academic contemplation. It's also incredibly challenging upfront, properly setting the reader in the right humble frame of mind for entering the journey of conceptualizing AWESOME GOD! This should be required reading for the Church universal.
This is one of those books that every Christian should read. I love that it's not written in theological terminology that would be difficult for normal every-day-Christians to understand; rather, it's written in layman's terms and the concepts are very easy to grasp. Tozer does such a fantastic job of highlighting God's many attributes without reducing God to mere mortal understanding. It's a quick read with short chapters so you'll breeze through it quickly, but don't take it's small size for granted! This book is power-packed and life-changing. If you have never read The Knowledge of the Holy, please consider picking up a copy. I promise you that your relationship with and love for the Lord will only grow with the turn of each page.
If you ever feel overwhelmed by the weight of your problems, read this book. It explores the attributes of God. This book is so profound that I sometimes read only a paragraph and spend the day pondering it. I try to read it every few years.
I’ve been saved for quite some time but this book makes you question everything you thought you knew about God, but in a good way.Tozer effortlessly explores attributes about God that will leave you in awe of how incomprehensible our Beloved Father actually is. It’s been a long time since my reverence for God has been stirred this magnificently. I’ve read it several times and am currently using it as a morning devotional.
This is a must-read, in my opinion, for those who are seeking God with their whole heart. It makes an excellent daily devotional if you have 15 or 20 minutes a day to read a chapter. Very rich and insightful!
I liked the book when the author described God as best as he could describe Him which was pretty good. But every other paragraph it seemed the author was comparing our facilities for characteristics not comparable to God's which any born-again Christian already realizes. To have to read about our fallen state every other paragraph instead of about God I felt was a minor let down... However, the attempts to describe God were great in their wordiness and attempt at unlimited scope to describe the attributes of our wonderful, majestic, awesome God. I will definitely continue to read A W Tozer's books!

I agree with the author that Noah's Flood was likely caused by a comet, that other Old Testament disasters were likely caused by comets. I also agree that the Gog and Magog war is the Battle of Armageddon. I liked learning about ancient cultures that recorded details of comet impacts.However, I disagree that the Rev. 13 empire will be the Revived Roman Empire, and I disagree that most of the trumpets and bowls in Revelation describe comet impacts. Some do, most do not. He also does not see nuclear war and ignores statements in the verses that contradict his belief, such as in Joel 2, where he says Joel's army is comets. But it says they "leap over mountain tops" which comets do not do, but missiles and rockets do (see Discoveries in Bible Prophecy, by Michael D. Fortner).I took off one-half star for taking things too far, and one-half star for poor writing. I am also a nonfiction writer, and would give the writing a C- . It should be rewritten to consolidate the information instead of spreading it out through many chapters. You can read about Noah's Flood in detail in several chapters, for example. He should also condense it because he repeats things a lot and it makes it way too long and repetitive.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book! I learned so much from it and it all makes perfect sense! It is great to finally read a logical explanation for some of the unexplained events in the Bible. The best part is that Goodman is not using science instead of supernatural, he is backing up the supernatural with science! Who knew science and religion could work together? It's great!
I have long been intrigued by what the geological historical record says about the earth's past, and how it relates to the future of our planet. This book takes the reader through the past while linking it to stories, long considered myths by most and demonstrates how said myths were likely born, the impact that they had on life at that time and what may very well lie ahead.I highly recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in Velikovsky and others who looked at the skies and earth to discover our past.
I highly recommend Dr. Jeffrey Goodman's book "The Comets of God- New Scientific Evidence for God."Dr. Goodman has done what no one else out there in Bible prophecy land has ever done. He proves the Bible using history, archeology, science and linguistics and not opinion, doctrine or spin. Many of the things he proves are definitely upsetting to the prophecy apple cart and there will be many who will not receive his findings. But my eyes have been opened to some things that I used to believe that I have now rejected as false understanding.The book is rich in facts that provide a fresh look at old beliefs. Dr. Goodman is a "Polyglot" and His ability provides a deeper understanding of the meaning of many words in scripture that we have taken for granted. Understanding the true meaning of words is a key component to Bible study and comprehension of the scriptures. Although the translations of our Bible are very good they are not perfect. As time unfolds, so also does our knowledge increase and we should embrace it! (Dan 12:4)Thank you Dr. Goodman for your courage and perseverance to search out a matter!Proverbs 25:2 It is the glory of God to conceal a thing: but the honour of kings is to search out a matter.Sarah Beveridge
This is a really terrific book. Dr.Goodman clearly and concisely shows how God uses natural phenomenon to accomplish His will. I e-mailed the author and asked about Velikovsky's work in this area and he responded by saying, "Velikovsky was the first to champion the idea of the Earth and the solar system having undergone sudden and violent catastrophic changes. He was correct when he looked at comets as being important instruments of change...." A really fascinating book. If you've ever wondered why ancient man would worship little lights in the sky, you'll have your answer!!
Makes some of the profesies come to life. Certianly Daniel and Revelations. When God goes to war nobody wins but the Godly! REPENT---would be a good word for the day.
Good read. Not complete in his assumptions. He takes many verses and squeezes them a little to hard. Still a good book. Many ideas I had never considered.

This is what happens when you tell your publisher you're going to write a biography of notorious recluse Bill Watterson, including an interview with the famous artist and author, but you never actually get an interview with Watterson. There is nothing new here; some awkward and unnecessary interviews with people who knew Waterson in the distant past or maybe know someone who went to college with him or something like that. This narrative would have been far better suited as a long-form piece for a magazine or website; as a book, it's mostly filler.
There are problems with Nevin Martell's book, Looking for Calvin and Hobbes: The Unconventional Story of Bill Watterson and His Revolutionary Comic Strip. While the title encourages the reader to think he or she will be reading the story of how Calvin and Hobbes came to be, what we get instead is one man's personal odyssey to score an interview with the elusive creator of the strip, Bill Watterson. It's true that we DO get to read the results of Martell's research (which include lots of tidbits regarding the aforementioned story), and it's often interesting. However, the book suffers from the plethora of personal asides about his wife, prior writing projects, and rock star interviews Martell had done.Another problem rises due to the fact that Bill Watterson owns "Calvin and Hobbes" lock, stock and barrel. As a result, there are no comics printed in the book. Instead, Martell resorts to taking page upon page to describe individual strips, from first panel to last. While I acknowledge that this wasn't the author's fault, it adds a level of tedium to some sections of the book.And yet another issue with the book comes in the writing itself. Martell primarily writes for magazines, and that's how this book reads: as a series of magazine articles on the same subject, rather than as a coherent whole. He repeats quotes from earlier parts of the book, summarizes earlier chapters in later ones, and so on. This would be fine if we were reading the book one chapter at a time over several weeks or months, but it doesn't work in book form. Also, his description is sometimes clumsy: "Everything was drenched in pure white, as if God had forgotten to shake the Earth as he would a snow globe." That's a long way to go for a simple image. In addition, Martell sometimes makes errors when discussing the comics themselves. When talking about Calvin's use of the cardboard box (one of the great conventions of the strip), he states that the Atomic Cerebral Enhance-O-Tron is one of the box's many uses. Well, the ACE was a colander that Calvin put on his head. A small error to be sure, but one that a fan will easily catch. Several more are scattered through the book.However, the book is worth reading. His interviews with Watterson associates are illuminating, and his chapter on how Calvin and Hobbes influenced other comic artists is a must. He rounds up a who's who of current and former comic artists and syndicate bigwigs for these chapters. No one can fault the man's legwork.Overall, I'm not sorry I read it. It was obviously a labor of love for Martell, and that comes through on every page. The problem is, that often comes through too strongly. It's interesting, but not essential to ones' appreciation for, or understanding of, the wonder that was Calvin and Hobbes. 3.5 stars.
You are warned that this book is not a traditional biography. Certainly there are a lot of biographical details about Bill Watterson, but a goodly portion of the book is the author's journey to obtain them. Generally, I enjoyed this book, but if I were his editor, I would have asked him to make some cuts. My advice is to take it with a grain of salt and skip around if you feel you need to.
This book did so much more for me than entertain me with stories of Watterson and Calvin & Hobbes. It made me inspect myself in some ways and has inspired me in others. What a good book and about such a thought provoking subject. Great job Nevin.
In the film industry there's a well known curse on the filming of Cervantes' novel Don Quixote. Cinematic giants such as Orson Welles and Terry Gilliam have attempted to capture this legend on cellulose. Though various musical, theatrical and made-for-television productions have appeared, none have yet succeeded in the realm of major motion pictures. Gilliam even released a documentary about his misery called "Lost in La Mancha" (he's apparently exhumed the "Man Who Killed Don Quixote" project, set for 2011 release). Nevin Martell's short book "Looking for Calvin and Hobbes" provides a biographical equivalent to the motion picture Man From La Mancha (though in this case the "curse" orginates from the subject). The book could probably carry the title "Lost in Chagrin Falls." Unfortunately, despite the book's actual title, Calvin, Hobbes and their elusive creator, Ohioan Bill Watterson, still remain at large. In fact, this three-parts authorial memoir, one-part biography may even add to the Watterson mystique. The obstinately elusive cartoonist dodges the author at every step. But this just validates the law of induction, for he has turned down just about every interview ever sent his way. Given the glut of evidence concerning Watterson's attitude towards publicity, this project was Quixotic from its very conception.Drooling, blathering fans of "Calvin and Hobbes" probably know everything relevant contained in this book. Nonetheless, those who love the strip but know next to nothing about its creation or its creator will learn quite a bit. Unfortunately, even readers in that demographic will have to wade through pages of memoir that may or may not prove interesting. And this book is more of a memoir than a biography, which the main title states pretty clearly, though the subtitle belies with the words "the unconventional story of Bill Watterson." In the sometimes meandering,largely first person narrative, only fragments of Watterson's story appear. A few of Watterson's interviews and essays get quoted nearly in entirety. These quoted passages stick out neon-like as highlights. The surrounding intrusive narrative doesn't really add much to them. Along the way, readers learn far more personal information about the author than about Watterson. Though some anecdotes, such as Watterson's famous quote "why would I want to talk to Steven Spielberg?" and his berating speech at the 1989 Festival of Cartoon Art prove rewarding even if some experience them as reruns. The author does seek out numerous people who knew or worked with Watterson. He demonstrates admirable persistence here. Unfortunately, these episodes typically relate no more than good memories or reminiscences from many people who no longer know the cartoonist. Raving fans may soak up every word, though they may not learn much new. Others may find them uninspiring along with the author's ruminations about his comic collections and memories. Most unfortunate is what the author refers to as "the finale." Yes, a member of the Watterson family does finally come forward, but the encounter, rare as it is, reveals as much as the other encounters. The family respects the cartoonist's privacy. And the cartoonist himself seems extremely uninterested in further talk about "Calvin and Hobbes." Further, he seems to subscribe to the Sartrean notion of genius, namely, that genius resides in creative works rather than in the people that create them.Though Martell does not find Calvin, Hobbes, or Watterson, "Looking for Calvin and Hobbes" nonetheless provides a good overview for the uninitiated. Those interested in Watterson's pre-"Calvin and Hobbes" work will find adequate information here, but unfortunately only in narrative form. The book sadly contains no pictures. Doubtless anyone who reads this book will learn something from it, though the sections that read more like memoir could have withstood extensive reduction. One thing remains certain, this is no "Schulz and Peanuts," the massive 2007 Charles Schulz biography that Watterson actually reviewed for The Wall Street Journal. This reads more like a memoir of an attempt to write a book as in-depth as David Michaelis' magnum opus. But to be fair, Schulz frolicked in the limelight relative to Watterson's hermetically sealed public attitude. In the end, Martell asks the question many fans have likely asked: will Bill Watterson appear again? Will he change his vow of silence towards his cartoon masterpiece? Though he supposedly now paints (though some in the book say he's not too satisfied with the results yet) many forsee the artist's potential "second coming" in this medium. Maybe. Maybe not. If he does come out again and speak openly, this book will instantly become obsolete except as a documentary of the thick shell the cartoonist maintained in "retirement." And this begs one big, nagging question that undergirds the book. Obviously Watterson doesn't want attention. This book hammers that point in like a suspension bridge rivet. Obviously the time isn't ripe for a resurgence. So why, given the evidence available, even prior to this book's publication, was this project undertaken? Skipping the obvious answer, Martell and the publishers sort of got what they deserved. If anything, this book should stand as a warning to those who want to seek out Watterson. He will only appear when he's ready and he will appear on his terms. And if he doesn't, then his amazing strip remains. And isn't that enough? Those who voraciously covet a Hobbes doll may protest. But Watterson doesn't owe us anything. He's living his life the way he wants and maybe we should just leave him alone until he's good and ready.

I have been healed twice of rather big problems because of this book alone once and the other time with the help of a Christian Science Practitioner. Many years ago i had one of my legs pulled out of joint, was bleeding and was unable to stand on the leg and yet 30 minutes after it was totally healed and this just from the information in this wonderful book. The second time I had a series of bloody noses which went on for a about a week or so and the last one was so bad that I had to hold pressure on the nose and when I let up it was a gusher and I called the practitioner and she on the phone talked with me about the truths in the book and in a short period, maybe 20-30 minutes my nose stopped and that was the end of it. I felt like I could get hit in the face and still not have to worry.There are a lot of wonderful books on healing, millions of people have seen results, some large, some small, but the most important thing is it works and the side effects, of which there are some, are one is made better morally, spiritually as well as physically.Read and enjoy, it will be a great help in whatever quest you are one.

The principles and information in this book have been tried, tested and demonstrated by millions of people world-wide for a century and a half. No-one can ever claim that this book contains anything less than truth and a proven practical guide to health, abundance, peace and happiness. I personally have experienced hundreds of healings, large (miraculous) and small (yet oh, so meaningful) in all areas of my life from applying what's explained in this book. When you're tired of all the New Age (& LOA) fluff that simply doesn't work, dive into this book whole-heartedly. Read it very slowly (it's depth is uncharted) and work to comprehend it. Each and every paragraph warrants re-reading multiple times and pondering. This is the only book you will ever need to read for the rest of your life here, but it will require repeated re-reading. this is the real, old-school metaphysics, written by a true master.
I have a hard copy of this book, but recently found this for my kindle as well. I've been working my way through this intriguing and very deep work by the founder of Christian Science. It's comforting since I've been dealing with health issues, but I don't know how to interpret much of her writings or how to properly apply them in my life.
This is the textbook for Christian Science and will give new insights into Christianity, indeed all spiritual lineages. Groundbreaking--new theology.
Introduction to metaphysics of a high order. Mary Baker Eddy is an extraordinary teacher. May not be for everyone, but definitely worth a peek. .
Interesting read, It is an easy read with applicable principles. May not align with some mainstream ideology, but this is why Christian Scientists are different. Recommended for anyone simply looking to learn about other's belief systems.
