Review
"The extraordinary reception that Mary Carruthers's The Book of Memory has received, as well as that of other recent studies of learned memory, amply justifies an anthology of high medieval memory texts. That Carruthers would coedit the volume with Jan Ziolkowski, one of our major medieval Latinists, is particularly felicitous. The result is a volume that will interest a wide spectrum of readers."—Patrick Geary, University of California, Los Angeles

This is a scholarly anthology of pieces written during the middle ages to help people remember (mostly biblical and other religious) written or verbal works. The introductions of the the book and of each chapter are interesting. Really, the whole thing is too dense for me, but that is not the fault of the book.
Take a look to see the kinds of images and tricks used by your ancient ancestors to remember massive amounts of all sorts of information. The medieval arts of memory are really ancient memory arts derived from the ancient Greeks and adapted to medieval purposes. The subject matter is therefore (what else?) religious, but the principles are the same. These arts cannot be learned by the application of general rules alone. Examples are needed and are supplied here in abundance. The arts are immediate and individual and need the application of the individual imagination in order to work effectively. The mnemonic image I like the best is penance. It is a seraph that is quite imposing when seen as a whole and almost seemingly impossible to memorize. But, because it is logically arranged and lends itself to narrative clues and cues, the thirty visual components of penance become clear and easy to recall. Thus penance becomes a easily assimilated doctrine, not a gaseous cloud of ideas, and something indisipensible to any twelfth-century reader striving for holiness.
All books by Mary Carruthers are great overviews of the topic and show a few techniques at memorization. The purpose of the book is not to teach the methods but rather place it in a cultural and historical perspective.
For those who love a designer hat from the age of the Bull, the book shares a good look into the world of Medieval culture through memory palaces of its populace.
Excellent research. A lot of new information about medieval age.
A wealth of knowledge, the past and present with the state of human cognition.
"The Medieval Craft of Memory: An Anthology of Texts and Pictures" is a valuable resource for the independent scholar interested in Medieval thought and mnemonic techniques. As a companion to Mary Carruther's other book "The Book of Memory" it is a welcome complement. It is of especial interest for the partially educated (as most of us are in these academic dark ages) as the selections are translated from Latin. Many of the original works are extremely difficult to find outside specialised libraries, so this book also is a tremendous time-saver. It is particularly useful as source for finding other works, as some of the selections are only partial. Of course, this would necessitate a knowledge of Latin. It would have been nice to have the Latin as well, but one can't have everything. For those interested in what authors the work selects from, they are as follows: Hugh of St. Victor, Albertus Magnus, Thomas Aquinas, Frances Eiximenis, Thomas Bradwardine, John of Metz, Jacobus Publicius, and an anonymous author. The mnemonic device of the Guidonian Hand is also given, but it is an illustration. Each author and selection is introduced with introductions of varying lengths. A general introduction begins the book as a whole, which is frequently useful (it is imperfect, but one can overlook that due to the value of the selected texts). A bibliography and index close the work.An appendix that includes brief selections from two texts from late antiquity, namely Consultus Fortunatianus's "On Memory" and C. Julius Victor's "On Memory" is also included. The greatest aggravation this book possesses is its brevity. In 311 pages it covers 14 authors, and at times the selections simply seem too short. Further, both St. Thomas's and St. Albert's commentaries on Aristotle's "On Memory and Recollection" require one two acquire a copy of Aristotle's original work, which is not included yet is needed to truly comprehend the commentaries. It is not difficult to find, but it is still a minor aggravation. As a whole, however, this book is extremely useful. It is not light reading, however, as it is a scholarly work and one should be prepared to work a little when one reads it. It is excellent for the medievalist, the enthusiast of mnemonics, historians of thought, and those simply interested in how well people can actually think and remember and how to go about training themselves to do so. At times the tone of the academic preambles of the editors are a little too dismissive of the medievals's values, but overall the book is an excellent tool for the thinking person. My hat is off to the publisher for putting out an academic publication that isn't a waste of paper and space.
This approach to memory explains how so many illiterate folk were able to present stories and often volumes of information without textual backup. We always seem to think of the "mid ages" betwixt the ROMANS (wow!) and the Renaissance as ignorant and "dark." It is only our lack of information that allows us to do so. This volume fills in many of the crevices, with little-known textual material.I love it!

Amazon.com Review
The horrifying sex murders committed in southern Ontario by Paul Bernardo and Karla Homolka caught the attention of the media and public of Canada like few, if any, cases in that country's history. Readers of either of the two previous books about the case (Deadly Innocence and Lethal Marriage) may be skeptical that another retelling is necessary, but Invisible Darkness benefits from Stephen Williams's prodigious research and his unique perspective on Karla's culpability. Williams had to jump several legal hurdles unique to Canada's "Crown disclosure" protocols, but eventually was able to gain access to more than 70 hours of videotaped police interviews with Karla, interviews with Paul by his defense attorney, and even psychiatrist's notes. Williams uses vivid vignettes to tell the story, and refrains from unnecessarily graphic details about the crimes. As the Winnipeg Free Press writes, "If any readers still believe [Homolka] was a victim of post-traumatic stress, abused into submission by Bernardo, this will put that idea to rest."

Invisible Darkness is a disturbing, dark, nightmare-inducing, well-written account of terrible crimes and the psychopathic couple who committed them. I read a fair amount of true crime but of everything I've read this book creeped me out the most. It is not for the faint of heart. The crimes are described in such horrific detail I almost put the book down, but the depraved couple who committed these crimes deserved no less. I'm interested in the psychology of psychopaths and serial killers and am always looking for a way into understanding them and seeing them as still human. But by the time I finished Invisible Darkness I felt a visceral hatred for Karla and Paul and not a shred of compassion. One of the things I found most interesting was the way Williams juxtaposed Karla's seemingly perfect domestic life (her fairy tale wedding etc) with the pure hell it concealed. Also interesting how the 'lovely' pornographic Karla managed to wrap therapists, the police, and her lawyers around her little finger with her tales of victim-hood. I think in this case the stereotypes of vulnerable pretty women that are ingrained in our culture worked in her favor. Though I would like to 'unknow' some of this book, it continues to haunt me.
Wonderful Book about the serial killing team of Paul Bernardo and Karla Homolka. They both sexually assaulted, raped, sodomized and murdered three teenage girls, Tammy Lyn Homolka (Karla decided to give her 15 year old sister's virginity to Paul as a Christmas gift, by drugging her and sexually assaulting her while Paul raped her but she died probably from mixing alcohol and veterinary anesthetic), Leslie Erin Mahaffy (Paul kidnapped her after finding her locked out of her house after coming home after curfew, they kept her for 3 days with both Karla and Paul sexually assaulting her but had to strangle her because Karla's parents were expected for a Father's day dinner. After they dismembered her body, encased it in cement and dumped it at Lake Gibson) and Kristen Dawn French (Paul and Karla kidnapped her from a church parking lot, kept her as long as they could, continually violating her and then strangled her and dumped her in a ditch). The most sickening aspect is that she's free.
This book chronicles the story of the so called "Ken and Barbie" killers. Most of the book seemed more focused on Karla than on Paul but I was able to get past that. Both of these killers are sick and justice has not been fully served on these two.The true events took place in the late 1980's and early 90's in Canada near the US border with Niagara Falls. The couple has their own love story along with their wicked crimes. Both Paul and his wife Karla are two people who delight in others pain. Paul is a serial rapist while Karla enjoys pain in others especially if it pleases Paul. While Karla tried to paint herself as a victim too under Paul's control, I believe she is just as wicked as he was.In the end, this wicked couple kidnap, rape, and murder three women including Karla's own younger sister (a gift to Paul according to Karla).Overall, not a bad read. The story got bogged down in the end with the police investigation but it was needed.
Being originally from Southern Ontario, although having left before most of the events described in this book, I was quite horrified by this whole story. I won't describe the story itself in any detail as I believe it to be very public knowledge--the author does a very good job of relating what happened. The rapes--although not two of the murders--are described in very graphic detail that many readers will find traumatic to read. It is horrifying how matter-of-fact the act of rape became for this couple. For example, at one point Karla and Paul are entertaining people they called "friends" in their home. At first it seems like this might offer the reader a brief respite from the continual onslaught of horrible crimes. But the respite is brief: the very next paragraph, Paul is in the bathroom raping one of his female houseguests.Williams does a good job of describing the rapes, the criminal investigation, and the trials in considerable detail--although, as noted, the details are shocking, for those who want to know more about the case, there is a great deal of information here.Despite the detail, however, there are significant questions left unanswered. Despite the graphic detail on the rapes, the deaths of two of the girls happen offstage. Thus the important question of who was more responsible for those deaths--Karla or Paul--is something that we can only guess at. I had hoped to learn more about this, as it is an important question given the plea bargain that allowed Karla to go free after a relatively brief sentence, whereas Paul is locked up presumably for life. I was also left with some unanswered questions about the plea bargain itself. The way it was generally described in the media doesn't seem to be the full story but the exact motivation for the plea bargain remains a bit unclear.I understand that Williams' other book on this subject gives more detail on the plea bargain itself, and I look forward to reading that book as well--to the extent that one can "look forward" to any kind of reading of this sort of subject matter.
Even though I already knew the story, I found this an incredibly compelling book. I've seen television episodes on this case and have read another book about it. Stephen Williams clearly has some inside information that was not released to the public. For instance he describes what is happening on the videotapes that supposedly nobody but the jury, the police, the lawyers or the court had access to. There are a few times where the description of a person or place was a little excessive, but I didn't think that was enough to take off a star. I highly recommend this excellent true crime book.

My son started this series last year when he was in third grade, he still loves it.
Pompeii has been an interest of mine for some time and I enjoyed sharing this interest with my daughter by reading this book with her. The book was very accurate and it held my daughter's attention. I believe I learned a thing or two as well!
Since hearing a song about Pompeii, my daughter has been fascinated with the subject. She read this book and another in one day. Impressive for a child who is not too fond of reading. The story has also encouraged her to read more books about history.

In this book (based on his dissertation) Carson surveys the literature from the time of Moses through the apostles and into the Christian era, examining attitudes toward these two topics frequently posited against each other in Christian thought: divine sovereignty, through which God ordains what will come to pass, and humans' responsibility for what they choose to do. This survey helpfully includes old and new testament biblical sources, but also deuterocanonical and other apocryphal sources, contrasting the development of rabbinic and christian thought over that period. (Carson writes with a protestant christian pressuposition). He closes his book with an honest assessment of the tension between these two axiomatic points of doctrine. The book is divided into 5 sections:- Introduction - chapter 1- Tracing the issue in the hebrew canon - ch. 2 - 3- Tracing the issue in 'intertestamental' works (including deuterocanonical and other works from that period proper, and rabbinic literature into the christian era) - ch. 4 - 10- Analysis of the issue in the writings of John - ch. 11 - 12- Theological reflections given all of the above - ch. 13Each section is undoubtedly immanently accessible to people familiar with the subject domain. I found the second section very eye-opening, as other works I have read have exclusively focussed on biblical (non-deuterocanonical) sources: it was "tough slogging" to follow the academically oriented text, but rewarding to do so. The review of the new testament works of John, in contrast, is more accessible to any Christian who has thought about this subject, and it also is rewarding for its well-reasoned interpretation. I would heartily recommend chapters 12 and 13 as being well worth the value of the book to anyone not willing to endure the more challenging first 11 chapters.Intellectual honesty characterizes the work. Carson's conclusions are well argued, dispatching various simplistic "answers" to the tension between the two doctrines (from "hyper-pelagian" to "hyper-calvinist" and many in between) by demonstrating how they reshape rather than resolve the apparent conflict; typically, they address the issue at one point but fail to follow through the logical implications. Carson himself does not end with a tidy, simple resolution to the tension; rather, he:* clarifies what the bible clearly teaches about these two doctrines (remember my comment above about Christian Protestant perspective), and* clarifies what presuppositions this apparent conflict challenges. The reader is left with a renewed appreciation for how one should be humble about the conceptual frameworks we on all have on which we try to structure our understanding of such teachings.Carson focusses on God's sovereignty from a "purpose", contrasted with a "directly causal", perspective. The only point in the book I find weakly supported is that he defends an asymetry in divine sovereignty between election and reprobation, and generaly causality of good vs. evil. He includes minimal argument; here's hoping he will might explain that position (Dr. Carson, if you reading this, how about an article in 'Modern Reformation' magazine?)To challenge Carson's work, anyone that wants to take him on must demonstrate how an alternate understanding is more compatible with the biblical texts, rather than demonstrate how it is more compatible with one's presuppositions or how it leaves one with a more "comfortable" answer.Note, for an easier read that includes an over-view of the conclusions reached here without many of the supporting arguments, consider reading Carson's also excellent book "A Call To Spiritual Reformation" - chapter 9 in particular.
This is a great book for discussing its main premise but needs re-reading and much thinking through of ideas presented. A dictionary nearby is useful, too. Not being a theologian or scholar, it takes some work to get through but is well worth it. Carson presents a difficult topic and though more simplified explanations would be to my liking, I enjoyed/am enjoying the challenge.
Unlike most authors who tackle this subject, Carson refrains from leaning too far in either direction. He pulls it off because his focus is on scripture. Consequently theologians and philosophers of various positions refer to this book. It is a must read for anyone who wants to do a little deeper study into the subject.
good read
What do you get when a biblical scholar writes a book on a difficult theological topic? Not a very good book. Carson attempts to explain the divine sovereignty-human responsibility tension in Scripture and early Jewish literature. He goes over the Old Testament, Apocrypha, Pseudopigrapha, DSS, and a host of other Jewish literature. According to Carson, as Judaism progressed in time human responsibility became more emphasized and merit theology began to develop (though DSS can be seen as an exception). He basically refutes E. P. Sanders' view that early Judaism was a highly grace oriented religion with no concept of "earned" righteousness (though he agrees with Sanders that early Judaism did not totally put aside God's grace in the salvific process). The section on how the OT and early Jews understood the tension is slightly informative. It can provide students some information on how early Jews formulated the tension between grace and merit. The more interesting (and more useful) sections of Carson's book is how the Gospel of John formulates the tension between divine sovereignty and human responsibility (chap. 12) and the theological implications of his study (chap. 13). Carson argues that John keeps the tension in balance (though not totally solving the dilemma) by positing BOTH divine sovereignty and human responsibility in people's actions. He argues that John, following the OT, does not see the logical incoherence of holding both concepts at the same time (i.e., humans are commanded to believe and obey even though God is sovereign over all human actions). The last chapter (13) pretty much summarizes all the points made in the book. What is interesting is that Carson does not come to a firm conclusion on the matter except to conclude that this tension is a lot more complex than the human mind can process. One wishes that Carson can push this matter a bit further - but, again, he is not a theologian or philosopher but a biblical scholar. In the end, what Carson comes up with is a compatibilist (Calvinist) concept of divine sovereignty-human responsibility (in contrast to the more classical Calvinistic model promoted by the likes of Charles Hodge). Overall, the book is useful in some respects. However, because this was Carson's doctoral dissertation at one point the reader will find the reading a bit difficult at times.
You can not beat this completed work by D.A. He does a great job. He Def has the authority in this arena of theology. A must read for any serious Christian trying to conform his mind to scripture and not the world. Rom. 12:2
Great book by Carson!

The seller gets a 5 star, and this is by far a BETTER version than the more recent ones. Too much politics in them. This has less of the environmentalism religion and more of the science. Arrived on time and as expected.
Great Book
Exactly what I was looking for!
Item exactly as described
An easy and understandable book.
great
This is a good, well-written textbook with a lot of great illustrations and diagrams. However, the book is written on a very basic level, and only provides a very superficial coverage to current environmental science topics. I would not recommend this textbook for upper-level high school students. For teachers, this textbook also includes a resource CD with Powerpoints, tests, quizzes, and other worksheets.
Got this book for my nephew. He was thrilled. He needed it for school. Nice price point too. Anything for the kids.

#36,170 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)
I'll leave the other fine commentaries to explain the need for and the history of the Hours in a life of prayer, and concentrate on the tool itself and the mindset necessary to embrace all it holds.Anyone who has decided to purchase these books, has made a sizable investment and also made a strong personal commitment to advance their prayer life. They are intimidating. They look (and are) "official" and complicated. They are certainly not for light reading. They are not easy to use, nor is there an easy way to learn to use them. These are serious, life-long tools used to spiritually shape and grow the soul. With the shortest volume a bit over 1700 pages, and the longest almost 2400 pages, the Hours require attention, dedication, study and slow, steady easing into this rich resource. It can't be said enough that you must gain some knowledge on how to use these books and have discipline in following the path of the prayer. It takes a while to be comfortable with the books as they are configured. The volumes are structured well for their purpose, so you can go from section to section with ease, as you learn the flow of the Office. Your prayer will unfold from the center of the book, outward to the prayers for that Office, to both front and back sections as needed, each section having content necessary to that Office. It will take some time to learn the method of prayer in conjunction with the Office recited. But the price you pay in the discipline required to learn to use this tool will be returned a hundredfold, with life-long (and further!) rewards. The books are big and have many sections that may be referenced during the Hours, and it takes some time to be comfortable with the back and forth between sections required at various times. Even changing sections, the book remains comfortable and usable for right or left hands. The volumes themselves are a bit larger than a large paperback novel. The first thing you notice is how very well the book fits the hand. One of the reasons to use a book rather then an electronic version for prayer, is the intimate tactile connection. As you pray, the feel of book-in-hand and the act of turning the page links you to the words, pulls you into the prayer. Even changing to a different section of the book provides a moment's pause to reflect and carry on a thought, which can be lost in the electronic versions of the Office. The paper is high quality and light weight, with a low-glare soft ivory color, enhancing the black print and the instructions printed in red, while not bleeding through the pages. Print size and type is easy on the eyes, and not hard to follow. The soft and pliable covers are colored for the seasons they represent, and hold comfortably in the hand while sitting or walking. In actual practice, one universally recognized problem is that there is no single authoritative guide easily teaching how to properly "use" the books in prayer, and the "instructions" such as they are, are not really clear and may be confusing in explaining the steps in how to pray the various Offices, holy days and seasons. One valuable tool I highly recommend, is the short and very well-written book "The Everyday Catholic's Guide to The Liturgy of the Hours " by Daria Sockey, and a visit to her very helpful blog. Internet based sites with helpful guides are also very available. All prayer requires effort, and more so here in this highly structured method of prayer . It's important to take your time to learn the set up of the book, the form of the Offices and the flow of the weekly and liturgical calendars. When beginning to pray with these resources, take it slow and easy, immersing yourself a little deeper into the discipline of prayer as you grow comfortable with each Office and what it holds. Do not do too much, or you will grow in frustration and work against progress in your prayer. This is a rich meal - take small bites and savor each one. One benefit as laity joining the raising of this prayer on behalf of the entire Church, is that we are not required to follow a certain form but we can adapt to our own circumstance and pray as we can, as little or as much as we will. This can help us to grow slowly and confidently in our prayer and method, expanding our reach as our need to grow closer to the Lord increases. For decades, I've switched between the excellent one volume version of the Hours and a four volume set, as circumstances dictated. The single volume is a great starting point and tutor in how to follow the structure of the Offices. The four volume set is a treasury of riches from Tradition and the Living Word that will hold you close for a lifetime. May the Lord bless your efforts and your journey toward Him.
This set comes with the inserts, including the Saint Joseph Guide to The Liturgy of the Hours. Amazon says they're frequently bought together, but there's no need to buy the Guide separately unless it's close to the end/beginning of the year. Mine was purchased in June 2017 and came with the 2017 Guide. The product description doesn't list the inserts and the Catholic Book Publishing website doesn't really show them well so I have included a couple pics of them.
As a seminarian, the full 4-volume set of the Liturgy of the Hours is required, whereas I had just been using Christian Prayer before. The Office of Readings has now become my favorite hour of the day! There is such a wealth of knowledge and practical wisdom contained in those texts, they have profoundly affected my spiritual life already, even in the week I've been praying with them! One of the best (required) purchases I've ever made.
When you buy the Catholic Book Publishing edition of the Liturgy of the Hours, the publisher includes inserts with frequently used liturgical texts so you don't have to keep finding those texts in the depths of the book. Convenient! But they're printed on flimsy normal-weight paper, which means that unless you're scrupulous, normal wear-and-tear will take its toll. This little package is the inexpensive solution. It is the same texts, but printed on much heavier--and much more durable--card stock. You will likely find this a good investment if you're using the book every day.One observation, though: Since the four volumes of the Liturgy of the Hours are fairly expensive and these cards are inexpensive, why doesn't Catholic Book Publishing simply package these with the books in the first place?
The Liturgy of the Hours IS the prayer of the church. It took me many, many months to figure out how to read the prayers, but now I start my day with the Office of Readings and Morning Prayer. I end the day with Evening Prayers. I take the volume we're in with me when I travel.Don't be intimidated. Once I figured out how to use the bookmarks and how to follow the order of the prayers, I found myself immersed in the great prayer of the Church. Get the yearly guide to help. Also, in the Liturgy books you will find directions in red print. And the books come with cards that guide you even further.
What a lovely set! Well bound, the imitation leather is clean and durable. The books come with insert cards that you can put in the appropriate book for the appropriate time of year if you need them. I don't like the inserts can fall out while I'm praying, so I just put a ribbon where the repeated passages are located. I've used a variety of offices - The Little Office of the Blessed Virgin, Shorter Book of Christian Prayer, all the apps that are available using my mobile phone or tablets but I wanted the books as a back up and I'm glad I purchased these.I'm not going to lie - the Liturgy of the Hours can be complicated to learn, but the fruits you receive from the praise you give and the meditation on our Lord are immense. If you are ready to deepen your prayer life and relationship to God it's time to start saying the Liturgy of the Hours.
I really love this set and find them much easier to use than I thought. For anyone serious about their faith, this is a must!
The Liturgy of the Hours is the official prayer of the Church; it's importance ranks second to the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. This four volume set has the office of readings, morning, daytime, evening, and night prayer. I've had the one volume set for a long time but since purchasing these I have been saying the office of readings and found the readings to be very spiritually enriching - writings of the Fathers: St. Agustine, St. Ambrose, St. Cyprian just to name a few. The second reading is from the Old Testament. I strongly recommend praying the Office if you desire to read and pray the Scriptures and join millions of Catholics in prayer!

This cookbook has a nice spread of different things to try. Not overly helpful in method, with cheeses that can be an issue. Good starter with a little help from the internet.
I inherited a fondue set with no idea what to do with it. This book is FULL of great ideas you'll never find on the net.Bought the book used - I can't find any evidence of use, much less abuse. Perfect condition.I hope I don't mess it up ,-)
This has such great recipes, and such a wide variety! Love hosting parties with this as a guide for fondue/ shabu shabu (aka hot pot), sauces, dips, etc.
I bought this book to go along with the fondue set my friend registered for for her bridal shower. She loved it and uses it when she has company and makes fondue. The illustrations really bring the recipes to life.
I have gotten this as a gift for both a dear friend and my mom, and both of them love it! I have had the opportunity to try a few of the recipes so far, and they are delicious.
Lots of great fondue recipes. If you are looking for a book to get some new fondue ideas, give this one a shot.
