I'm using this book for my senior seminar class, which discusses issues in the juvenile justice system. I think this book would also be perfect for a juvenile delinquency class.- Detailed. The book covers a lot of topics and detail in only so few pages. There is a lot material so it will take some time to sit down and digest all the information.- Deceptively short. The book itself is only 384 pages, but the font is relatively small and is singled space. I find myself feeling like I'm reading the condensed small paperback versions of a novel. Personally for me, I had eye strain reading this book. It's not too bad though; I just wish the font and spacing could have been more user-friendly.- Roller coaster of a book. I found myself enjoying certain parts, and then some parts the authors went on and on when it could have been explained more concisely. Some of the more engulfing and captivating parts of the book is when brutal cases of juvenile crimes are explored.Overall, solid book, with some sequences of the book that are difficult to read.
Book was ordered for a college class. It arrived on time, but now I have lots of homework! :)

If there is one thing I've learned about Master's level criminal justice study, it's that Doctorate level professors do not know a thing about criminal justice. As a former military man, former corrections officer, and current municipal law enforcement officer this book did little to enlighten me on the topic of criminal justice. However as long as big university's require the purchase of extravagantly expensive textbooks, this edition will do.No offense to the author, but I found this books material to be dry, uninteresting, and irrelevant to the every day criminal justice major.

Some of the questions seem repetitive and it can be tough to come up with clever answers. I'm in my 30's and my best friend in her 40's and she LOVED it and sent me these photos as she went through it with jokes about what I'd written. For someone who enjoys thoughtful gifts that take a little time I recommend it, especially if you can play with your answers a bit. It would be nice if it had other things more related to memories you share, but it was still fine. I also cut out a few little pictures and taped them inside for fun.
I saw this book and thought it would be such a great birthday present for my best friend - I know she will appreciate the thought and sentiment that I’m planning to put into it. I ordered it early so there would be plenty of time to come up with thoughtful answers for the questions (I’ve got till January!) This book is really cute - even though I paid attention to the dimensions I was still surprised at how small it was. It’s just hard to imagine such a little book. It is about the size of the palm of my hand.There are some fun prompts in this book although they do seem a little repetitive, so you’ll have to be thoughtful to fill out this book without giving the same answers for multiple prompts. The prompts are pretty open ended too, so you can be creative with your responses. For example: “you ___ the best ___ ever†or “I am so ___ that ___†could be filled in with so many different answers. I also like that the pages have a lot of blank space so I can write long answers or additional memories on the page if I want to. I’m going to enjoy filling out this book, and I’m sure my friend will love it. If you’ve got a sentimental best friend of your own, I’d recommend giving this book a try.
I bought this for my best friend for Christmas and she loves it!I knew it was going to be pretty tiny (smaller than my hand) but I wanted something cute and simple.The prompts are easy and short, but it makes it so much easier to add your own flair to it!I printed outhe pictures for each page and she loved it.This is great if you are looking for a short, heart felt present!
I absolutely love this book! I think it's the perfect size novelty gift for sentimental besties. It was so overwhelming at first! There are 50 pages to fill in, some with multiple blanks! I was so overwhelmed I put it back in the envelope it came in and let it sit for 2 days before braving the creative brainstorm. I found that thumbing through and filling in the pages that came to me really fast got my creative juices flowing and then once I got back to the hard to answer questions later, it was a breeze to fill in.My only complaint is pictured well in the #31 & 38 page. The second "they're" down on the right. No pen would write on that area of the page!! It was so frustrating. I really didn't want that word to stand out and it absolutely does because I had to go over it so many times to make the ink stick...I don't think that's a reflection on the product though. I have this issue in cards and on post it notes. That's just a common problem, frustrating but it is what it is. This book is well made and sturdy. I'm very impressed considering how cheap it was to purchase.I'd recommend writing out what you want to write for each page before actually writing it in the book. Or maybe write it out lightly in pencil and then trace over in pen. Then erase the pencil later once the ink dries.I read a previous review that said the same thing and I was like pfft, I'll be fine. No. I made stupid little mistakes writing too fast, skipping a letter in a word and then having to fix it. So it looks like I'm a sloppy writer. I'm a bit of a perfectionist so I'll be reordering and starting over lol I want this to be perfect. It's hard to come by great thoughtful gifts like this. I'll be printing out pics and buying stickers to spice it up a little.
My 9 year old son gave this to his best friend who is living abroad and will be celebrating his double digit birthday next week.The book is small (about 4-5" long) and has 50 questions for the Receive to fill out. We spent a good hour going through each question. I typed the answers and the next day my son used these answers to fill in this book. My son enjoyed thinking deeply about his friend and how he has impacted his life in a positive way. We are sure that birthday boy will love this book.
I got this to put in a care package for my best friend, who is a Navy wife. She loved it and we had fun trying to see if I remembered what I had filled in. I was satisfied with the purchase.The star subtraction is because I wish the pages were more conducive to being written on. The paper is the gloss like the picture section in the middle of a hardcover memoir. I have pretty good handwriting but it was still hard to make it look nice AND avoid smudging.I also wish there were some that had more than one blank, kind of mad libs-style, just to mix it up.
I got this for my best friend who is moving across the country soon and it was adorable to make and to watch her read. I had to write out all the prompts on a separate sheet of paper though so that I wouldn't repeat myself. Doing that I found that a couple of pages were pretty much duplicated but it wasn't too much of a problem. Overall it was a good going away/holiday gift and I'd recommend it to anyone looking to give something sentimentalish to someone.
Super cute and cleaver. Highly suggest going through and writing out the answers before you actually print them in the book. You might be able to use the same answer for something better. I could have written the same answer on about 5 pages but I wanted it to make it more cleaver. Although, I did use the same answer more than once when it really applied and make me think hilarious thoughts. This is very compact and while I was expecting something bigger, I'm glad it is this small and portable and doesn't cause clutter in ones home. :)

If you love science and want to work on a fabulously fun project or two (or ten!), this is certainly a book you’ll want to read. Perhaps you’ve seen some pretty interesting experiments on YouTube and have wondered just how they’re done. Just how do they make those gigundous bubbles? Well, now’s the time to make your own! Matter is “everything in the universe that’s not just empty space.†Easy concept, you say, and you probably have already learned in school that it “comes in three main forms: solid, liquid, and gas.†Ah, but one thing that you’ll soon find out in your science experiments is the fact that “matter can actually switch from one state to the other and back if the temperature and pressure are right.â€Perhaps you might be thinking that conducting several experiments can be quite costly, however, most of the items you’ll need can be found around the house. There are a few things you might not have on hand, but dollar stores generally have them in stock. For example, tea lights and flavored gelatin can be purchased there. Other items such as sugar, dish soap, food coloring, masking tape, baking soda, and other common household items can be gathered before experimenting. Oh, and safety pays in many ways so make sure you find an adult for those experiments that call for one.The Growing Crystals experiment is a great ‘inside’ experiment, but if you decide to go for those Big Bubbles, you might want to take it outside. After you make the bubble mix recipe in this book, simply gather up your materials—a 3-foot long [1-m] thick string or yarn, a couple of round dowels, some duct tapes, paper clips, and a pair of pliers—and be prepared to have a bubble blowout! There are step-by-step instructions with visuals to follow. Before you try this experiment, you’ll learn a bit of amazing science you can think about when that rocket starts moving. In part, that “soap sits on either side of a very, very thin layer of water and resists the water’s surface tension, allowing you to blow big bubbles.†Huge ones, actually. It is very unlikely that would have discovered this book if not for a Chinese friend of mine who strongly recommended this book to me. While I learned to trust her literary taste, this was one time when I was a bit skeptical. The brief description of the book didn't seemed to agree with many things that I had learned during my formative years. Still, based on my past experience with her recommendations, I wanted to give it a try.As I started reading, I quickly got drawn in by the vivid narration. It felt like I am there in Shanghai in the late 1960s, watching the Chinese Cultural Revolution unfold in front of my own eyes. While I could not break away from reading the book, something nagged me to doubt the perspective of the autobiographer, who was a member of the privileged class, and therefore seen as a "class enemy" by the Red Guard and the Chinese authority. She was brutally persecuted and spent years in solitary detention.Just when all this was happening in China, I was growing up in Calcutta. During those early days of the Cultural Revolution, a political movement gathered steam in my part of India. Locally termed the Naxalite movement, it was the action of the Maoist faction of the Communist Party of India. At the same time similar movements were growing up in many parts of Europe, Latin America, and the rest of the world, all inspired by Mao Zedong's Cultural Revolution in China. This movement, mostly led by the college students in and around Calcutta, eventually took a huge toll and thousands died as a result of clashes with police, rival political groups, or in police custody.In those days it was hard to find a single building in Calcutta where the walls were not covered by stenciled images of Mao, with the absurd sounding slogan "China's chairman is our chairman". The little Red Book of Mao's quotations were omnipresent. Romanticized stories of the Cultural Revolution floated in and energized a whole generation of bright young people. Many believed they were witnessing the start of an ideal society with brand new values.This book told a very different story. It told the story of a time when a bunch of young people were convinced that almost anyone outside of the working class was not to be trusted. Intellectuals and teachers were forced to give up their professions and pick up hard labor, all foreign books, music, art was abandoned and destroyed. Almost anyone with any past western connection were seen as spies. Thousands were jailed or killed simply on the basis of suspicion. Gangs of Red Guards roamed the streets and took whatever action they felt was necessary to punish and destroy the "Counter Revolutionaries". As a result of all this, people stopped trusting anyone, even closest family members, because under pressure anyone could point fingers. Those were horribly brutal times in China.Six years later we came to know of the ouster of the Gang of Four in China, the mastermind behind the horrible atrocities that happened in the name of the Cultural Revolution. Even though the authorities never directly blamed Mao or denounced the Cultural Revolution, all the old policies were reversed, and today's China is very far from the days of the Cultural Revolution. In spite of all that, somewhere deep in my mind, the romantic notions probably persisted. That was perhaps why my initial reaction was slightly doubtful. But as I read more, and also based on many other books I have read recently about that time in China, I realized that even if you discount the political beliefs of the writer, one cannot deny the inhuman conditions that prevailed, and the sheer madness of the ideology.What is most sobering is the fact that perfectly smart and well meaning people are capable of being blinded by a powerful ideology where we stop to question the facts. Anything that does not fit the ideological mold is ignored or explained away. That is the danger of an ideology, any ideology. Our intelligence is no guarantee that we would not fall victim of its anesthetizing effect. Ideologies are the thinking crutch of the intellectually lazy, where once you accept the framework, you don't have to do much critical thinking anymore, as the ideology does it for you. It is a black box where you can throw in your problems and the moral answer pops out.In 1977, just after the ouster of the Gang of Four, my parents visited China for the first time. At one point they visited Mao's mausoleum, who died an year earlier. My mother, not a particularly political person, saw the body of the man and started to weep. When I asked her what made her cry, she said she was thinking of the the thousands of young people in Calcutta who gave their lives believing in this man. I wonder what would have been her reaction if she also knew that thousands of innocent people were tortured and killed in China under his rule, and perhaps with his knowledge. Such are the complexities of history.
Bought this book to share after a friend lent me a copy to read. I wanted to lend it to friends/relatives as I was so impressed with Cheng Nien's story and her amazing spirit. The way she carefully chose her words and her great reasoning ability gave us a glimpse into a country where words matter more than most of us in the West can imagine. My favorite part of the book was on page 538, where the author compares her new life in America to life in her beloved China. To watch the nightly news, you would think we in the U.S. live in a terrible place, but Cheng Nien reminds us how valuable freedom is, and the many things our country does right. Reading books from those with such strength of character and courage in an inhumane world is uplifting, and quite educational.
She lived through HELL, but outsmarted all the commies -- a brave soul. All the young know-it-alls who think communism is acceptable should read about conditions under Mao and much of it in China today, where they track your every move. It's amazing what whiners and complainers they're turning out of our EXPENSIVE universities -- it's scary.
This book is one that should be required for every student to read to give them an ideaof what this Country did to destroy their citizen's lives and freedoms. We must be awarewhen government gets too much power. There was no way it's citizens could protecttheir family or freedoms. They had no second amendment to protect their rights tobear arms. It was an awful time in China and if you had any ambition to work hard andget ahead it was considered against the government in power.Read it...you will want to be aware of what could happen when we take our liberties for granted...
I must commend Ms. Cheng for her ability to write about her experiences during the Cultural Revolution with such candor and courage given the many devastating events. I was quite amazed at her ability to hold strong throughout her incarceration and rejoiced at her final vindication, even while saddened at the loss of her daughter. As a Westerner, I was informed of the political situation in China via the various media at the time but could no way have understood the intricacies from those sources as was detailed in this book. Perhaps it will sound strange but I feel, in some way, honored and privileged to have read this book.

Inside a jail cell where her best friend was a spider?Although autobiographical, this book reads like a novel and you easily follow along and fear for this woman’s life and integrity right beside her.It reads like a novel because in this country, regardless of the current climate, you can’t believe that this could actually happen anywhere.
What a horrible story! She must have been some kind of Saint to have endured what they put her through. She had steel too; she maintained throughout the ordeal that she'd done nothing wrong; which she hadn't (other than "Thought-crime" perhaps...)It starts out well enough, and the state tolerates her after the 1949 Revolution because of her foreign contacts. She had a taste for fine things and had collected many. Then the Cultural Revolution comes along and her life goes utterly to Hell... and stays that way for the better part of 20 years. They killed her daughter.Only a truly noble Human Being could emerge from such a nightmare of a tale without being poisoned in their innermost being. Ms. Cheng is one of those kind of people. What a lady! Makes me proud to be a human; a feeling I don't get much these days!
There is so little that Westerners know and understand about China and its history in the last 100 years. This is a big step in helping you understand the culture and thinking. And it’s very scary. And some elements still exist or are only temporarily sleeping. Excellent and scary and long.

I bought this book hoping for a tour guide type book. I am not really sure what this book is trying to be. The photos are very nice and there is information I have not seen elsewhere. However, there are few details on only a select number of hotels - the hotel write ups contain no information on getting in touch with the hotels, their prices, ratings, or websites. Each hotel has 2-10 sentences written on it. There is some unique content about the history of the island and the men who have been involved in the evolution of the island.For quick reading and information on the culture - I would give it 4 stars. Because it is advertised as a guide book, I give it 3. This book is not helpful for travel planning.
PACKED FULL of lots of information-great book and very helpful
This is a good book for an overview of St. Lucia. It has nice pictures and briefly describes many of the locations. It is not a travel guide in that it only mentions a few hotels (and not the newer ones) and restaurants. For me, it was like a book of postcards, giving a glimpse of St.Lucia.
This book is very well written and it really make our vocation perfect. We were able to plan all trips ahead and saved a lot of time on that beautiful island. highly recommended.

About the Author
Allyn Washington was born and educated in Connecticut, where he also began teaching at Trinity College, his alma mater. He taught at Boise Junior College (now Boise State University) before joining the newly forming Dutchess Community College, in Poughkeepsie, New York, where he began writing "Basic Technical Mathematics," At the time, technical mathematics did not have a text that gave students the math they needed to successfully achieve their goals in the technical mathematics program. Al decided to write a book that specifically aligned itself with the technical programs these students were taking. He wanted his text to be flexible, allowing instructors to teach in ways that would most benefit their students. Through his vision and determination, Allyn Washington created the "Technical Mathematics" series. Mario F. Triola is a Professor Emeritus of Mathematics at Dutchess Community College, where he has taught statistics for over 30 years. Marty is the author of "Elementary Statistics, 10th Edition," "Elementary Statistics Using Excel,"" Elementary Statistics Using the TI-83 84 Plus Calculator," and he is a co-author of "Biostatistics for the Biological and Health Sciences,"" Statistical Reasoning for Everyday Life," and "Business Statistics," He has written several manuals and workbooks for technology supporting statistics education. Outside of the classroom, Marty has been a speaker at many conferences and colleges. His consulting work includes the design of casino slot machines and fishing rods, and he has worked with attorneys in determining probabilities in paternity lawsuits, identifying salary inequities based on gender, analyzing disputed election results, analyzingmedical data, and analyzing medical school surveys. Marty has testified as an expert witness in New York State Supreme Court. The Text and Academic Authors Association has awarded Mario F. Triola a "Texty" for Excellence for his work on "Elementary Statistics," Ellena Reda is the Department Head of the Mathematics, Physical and Computer Sciences Department at Dutchess Community College in Poughkeepsie, NY. She began her career at DCC in 1988 as an adjunct instructor. Ellena received her Bachelor's degree in Mathematics at Marist College, her Master's degree in Mathematics/Education from the State University of New York at New Paltz, and an advanced graduate certificate in Educational Computing from the University at Stony Brook. She is the program coordinator at DCC for the Verizon Next Step Program, has served as the program's mathematics curriculum leader, and has taught a variety of courses in this technical program. Ellena is a member of the American Mathematical Association of Two Year Colleges. She was a writing team member of the NSF - AMATYC Math Works Project. She was the principal investigator for a National Science Foundation Computer Science, Engineering and Mathematics Scholarship (CSEMS) Grant and a team leader/teacher leader for the State Professional Development Collaborative, an NSF/ATE Grant. In spring 2005 she was named a Regional Teacher of the Year by the New York State Technology Education Association. Ellena has co-authored the "Excel Manual" that accompanies "Elementary Statistics," 8th, 9th and 10th editions written by Mario Triola. In her spare time Ellena enjoys golfing, running, and reading. In 2003 she ran her first marathon to raise money for the AmericanStroke Association. Since then she has run 2 marathons and 3 half-marathons. She has three grown children and lives locally with her husband.

The rented book arrived in bad condition. The cover was so dingy that when I wiped it with a wet wipe, the cloth had black grime on it! The binder was loose, which is probably to be expected but a little unnerving because you don't want the thing to fall apart on you. The worst part for me was that it had hair and other disgusting dried matter (food and what appeared to be boogers) attached throughout the pages.
