From the Back Cover

Who knew that Bill Alexander's simple dream of having a vegetable garden and small orchard would lead him into life-and-death battles with webworms, weeds, and a groundhog named Superchuck? Over the course of his hilarious adventures, Alexander puzzles over why a six-thousand-volt wire doesn't deter deer but nearly kills his tree surgeon; encounters a gardener who bears an eerie resemblance to Christopher Walken; and stumbles across the aphrodisiac effects of pollen when he plays bumble bee to his apple blossoms. When he decides (just for fun) to calculate how much it cost to grow one of his beloved Brandywine tomatoes, he comes up with a staggering $64. But as any gardener knows, you can't put a price tag on the rewards of homegrown produce, or on the lessons learned along the way.

This is the best stain remover for laundry (including blood, feces, etc.) I'm never without it and the refill is so economical and lasts for months.

This book runs the gamut - it is fun, entertaining and educational. There is nothing pretentious about the author. He does not shy away from his periods of lack of success and you are also able to revel in his successes. I am not a gardnerer and have not interest in gardening and yet I was thouroughly caught up in this story. Perfect gift for anyone who takes even the slightest joy in gardening

Funny read. Took a long time to get to the $64 portion of the title. But any one who has gardened for a few years can relate to the stories and struggles. I would consider reading a follow-up or others by this author.

Very funny book. I purchased it before, lent it out, and never got it back. Now, I've purchased it again for my neighbor to read.

I bought both of Alexander's books at the same time and read this one first. I had heard of it from a friend who retold to me the story of Alexander's expenditures and how they resulted in his cost of $64 for a tomato. While he does actually calculate out this expenditure, his math is flawed. He grew many other things in the garden including flowers, but yet he assigned them super/farmers market prices thus isolating the tomato as the full bearer of any uncovered costs. The same could be done for any crop in anyone's garden. He could have just as easily called it The $49 Cucumber.Aside from this one story which comes at the end of the book, the work on the whole is a must read for anyone considering taking on a large scale gardening project (particularly in the North Eastern US). He tackles the problems of insects, rots, molds, pests, deer, contractors, and ideals about organics.

Great book by an excellent author. I've recommended this book to many friends and family members. I also bought his book Flirting With French and recommend it to anyone learning a second language or someone wanting to remember their own struggle with learning French.

The title caught my eye at my local library in the book club section. I am not a gardener but could not put this book down. If you love to laugh, like good writing, good family settings, intriguing writing style and just good wholesome humor this is a book for anyone like that. There are recipes even and hints for true gardeners. And of course shared frustrations from soil, to seeds, to animals to weather. Not to mention costs!!I have given this book to three friends, all gardening men, who have read it and also loved it. Their spouses report that they hear chuckles from their husbands while reading. That's a pretty good "review" I think.

I read the 64 dollar tomato at the suggestion of new friends who we invited over to teach how to make fresh mozzerella. As they sat and chatted while I made a fresh batch, they seemed to marvel at the things that we frankly considered normal in our lives living on a cattle farm with three children. First, just making cheese seemed out of this world, but we were washing vegetable from our garden and cooking with eggs from our chickens. As we told one funny story after another of our adventures in learning to do all the different things we do on the farm, they said "You HAVE to read The 64 dollar tomoato." Having now read it, I can see where the bumbling, out in left field, get a wild hair and plant an orchard for some strange reason author reminded our visitors of our lives. I certainly identified with the author as he wrestled with all of his misadventures and as a fellow partially successful gardener I truly identified and laughed out loud at most chapters. I would recommend this book to anyone who gardens as it's an easy and enjoyable read.My one concerning detail as referenced above is the author has his own reviews of products, books, etc. One of the books he offers his opinion on is Weedless Gardening by Lee Reich, a book I have reviewed here on Amazon.com. The concepts offered in Weedless Gardening are dismissed out of hand by the author without any attempt to test them. While I did truly enjoy the stories in the book, I couldn't help but feel sorry for the author as he quite literally broke his back over the years trying to garden the open earth way. Quite often during the read I wanted to pick up the phone and call the author, just give weedless gardening a try and you'll eliminate much of the work that caused the last chaper to be so funny and heart breaking. As the book winds down and the author has to lay down his tools due to health issues, I truly felt sad for him that his obvious passion for the garden was wasted on pointless labor. Labor that could have been invested to much greater good.

if anyone has ever puttered, daily, with large or small plots of land in an effort to have a few fresh veggies and/or herbs and spices, this book will keep you in hysteria (unless you have just been out digging weeds this moment!)and for those who have not tried, I will bet they want to try believing they will not experience these "normal" ups and downs when people come up against nature!!! An absolute 'must read.'

I bought this book to add to my mosaic book collection as a mosaic artist, but I felt it was really just the same skills as large mosaics jut pared down. There were a few interesting projects, but I feel micro mosaicking may not be my thing and I'll stick with making larger mosaics.

This book offers some fairly nice micro-mosaic ideas. However, there are other projects that don't seem to apply to "micro" at all, even though they do present some interesting ideas. The biggest complaint I have regarding this book is the printing quality - it is terrible! Text and photos are fuzzy! In this respect it was a real disappointment in comparison to the other mosaic books that I have (which are eye-candy!).

I LOVED THIS BOOK ALOT AND GAVE GREAT INFO, BUT I WANTED TO LOCATE A PRODUCT THAT WAS BEING USED AND THE INFO THAT WAS GIVEN...LEAD ME TO A DEAD END. THAT REALLY DISAPPOINTED ME BECAUSE I REALLY WANTED THAT INFO.THE BOOK HAS WONDERFUL INFORMATION ABOUT GLASS & TILES WITH DIFFERENT APPOACHES. BOOK IS 5 STARS

I returned it because it did not include up too date information

There are not many books on this particular subject. I expected more detail on the process. There are more ways to do micro mosaics that are not mentioned in this book. Most of what she tells us in the book, I figured out by surfing the Internet.

DID NOT LIKE THE BOOK RETURNED IT

Easy to read with great color photos. I would recommend this to anyone who is curious about micro mosaic art.

Chapter OneOn Friday, Mr. Lynch walked around the classroom making sure everybody had written down the due date in their assignment books. Luckily, he started at the far side, giving Mitty Blake time to whisper to his best friend, "Due date for what?""Notes for the term paper," whispered Derek. "The one you've been working on for four weeks?"Mitty hadn't even chosen a topic yet.But Mr. Lynch had been teaching for years. He had encountered many Mittys. So although the paper itself didn't have to be turned in until February 18, on this coming Monday, February 2, each student in advanced biology had to submit an outline, ten pages of notes and a bibliography including four physical books."Books?" said Mitty, stunned. He was sure this had not been mentioned before. "Mr. Lynch, nobody uses books anymore. They're useless, especially in science. Facts change too fast.""Books," repeated Mr. Lynch. "This is to prevent you people from doing a hundred percent of your research online."Mitty had done zero percent anywhere, but he had certainly planned--insofar as Mitty had plans, which he didn't--to do his research online. So he said, "Mr. Lynch, an actual book is out of date before it gets printed. Anyway, a good scientist does laboratory research.""We did laboratory research last fall, Mitty," said Mr. Lynch. "I don't recall that you threw yourself into your project. I recall that you received a passing grade only through the efforts of the rest of your team. A scientist, Mitty, has to be able to dig through the published research of others. A scientist has to grasp the background and history of things. That means books."Mitty was willing to grasp the background and history of rock music. On a slow day, he could listen to Nirvana or Pearl Jam. But the background and history of disease?Because that was the depressing topic of this assignment: infectious disease."Each of you," Mr. Lynch had said, so many weeks ago that Mitty could barely remember it, "will choose an infectious disease of plants, animals or humans. You will study the disease in history and its ancient treatments or lack of them. If the disease has a specific history for us here in New York City--for example, during the yellow fever epidemics of the 1700s, people sometimes died at the rate of three hundred per city block per day--you will cover that. Other sections of your paper: description and course of the disease, current treatments and ongoing research. Finally, if your disease has an application in bioterrorism, you will cover that also."Even Mitty had awakened briefly to the exciting possibility of bioterrorism.Derek of course had wanted to be an exception to the rules. "Can we research bioterrorism only? I want to do anthrax but specifically Ottilie Lundgren, the ninety-four-year-old woman who died of anthrax in 2001 when she opened her mail. She's FBI case number 184. It's impossible for me to use books. No book has been written about her yet. All my research has to be online." Derek warmed to a favorite topic. "I can solve her mystery. I believe everything is online now, every clue I need, and I can nail her murderer.""I would be proud of you," Mr. Lynch had said, without sarcasm, "and you may focus on Ottilie Lundgren, but all that will do is make your paper longer. You still have to include everything I described and you still must have four books. Remember, class, that I too know how to use Amazon.com. I too can pull up a title that looks useful and stick it in a bibliography without actually reading the book. I too can open up the free first chapter and find something to put in my notes. I will know if you actually read a book or if you are cheating."Mr. Lynch was one of the few teachers who admitted that even here at St. Raphael's, a Manhattan prep school for the rich and/or brilliant (Mitty fell into the first category), there was such a thing as cheating. Other teachers skirted this possibility as if it were anthrax-laced mail.Right away, rare cool African diseases like Ebola and Lassa fever had been chosen by eager students. Two other kids also wanted anthrax but promised not to invade Derek's territory by mentioning Ottilie Lundgren. As the days went by, people began discussing their topics with excitement, as if they were genuinely interested. One girl had been allowed to choose Immunization: does it or does it not cause autism? Mitty would get autism just thinking about that. Another girl really did pick a plant disease and was deep into corn blight. Olivia, whom Mitty adored, had chosen typhoid fever and was already so advanced in her research that she was using the library of Columbia University's medical school, because every other library in New York City was too limited. Mitty hadn't been inside any library in the city of New York.As soon as Mr. Lynch finished ranting, Mitty slumped down in his seat. He had perfected the technique of listening to music on his iPod while a teacher talked. It was easy if he wore long sleeves. He kept the iPod in its armband and ran the cord down his arm and into his hand. Cupping the earpiece in his palm, he would rest his head on the same hand and listen to his music. His eyes stayed fixed on his teachers, who tended to be fond of him because he seemed so interested.Mitty's main interest was music. His life plan was to become a rock concert reviewer, the world's best job, and to prepare for this career, he had to buy, listen to and memorize everything out there. He really didn't have time for term papers. He certainly didn't have time for books.Mr. Lynch extended his hand for Mitty's assignment calendar.Every fall, St. Raphael's handed these out.

This was a decent book. Definitely written for a middle school level, and although the story is very intriguing and the idea is unique, the ending was very abrupt and felt rushed. I think that the main character, Mitty, was developed well as a whole. I felt like I got to know him well, but with only 200 pages, the other characters felt pushed aside and very shallow. Other than this, the story kept me reading and I was interested the whole time. I finished it quickly and I enjoyed the reading, right up until the end. I felt like she had a page limit of 200 pages and she realized she had to wrap up the story in 40 pages. The first few chapters were 10-14 pages each, with the last four chapters being 3-4 pages each. The plot twist towards the end was decent, but was fairly obvious coming. The author tried too hard to sell the obvious ending that the twist turned out to be obvious.

Code Orange by Caroline B. Cooney is a great book. Mitchell Blake is a below average boy in high school. He has to do a research project on a disease, so he decided to do smallpox, the worst sickness known to mankind. One day he came across a book about all sicknesses with an envelope in it. He opened it, sniffed it in, and put it back. However, he did not know that what he had sniffed in was the last remains of smallpox scabs. He began researching his project and found the most common symptoms of the virus. They matched how he was currently feeling; nauseous, headaches and, most of all, pain. He began to feel uncomfortable, so he emailed a couple of special doctors to see if he was in trouble. His emails were forwarded to many other people and even the FBI! They were also forwarded to a couple of evil terrorists. One day, when he was walking in the park, a van pulled up to him. A woman in it said she was from the CDC and was ready to run some blood tests to see if he had the sickness. He started running away but gave up of tiredness from the smallpox. The woman was actually a terrorist! She and her crew forced him into the van and later into a cellar. There they kept him hostage until they were ready to unleash him. After many days he devised a plan to capture the terrorists. When they were giving him food, he faked having smallpox symptoms. They were kneeling beside him when he took off for the door and shut it. He then turned on a furnace and threw his shirt over it to create carbon monoxide, a deadly yet unscented gas. After a couple hours, Mitchell finally had a chance to call 911. It turned out that Mitchell had not had smallpox. Even though the ending was not very exiting, I still thought this was a great book

This novel attempts to engage the reader with a fascinating what-if scenario of widespread epidemic in New York City. Instead, the reader is subjected to erratically developed narrative and cliche character development. The characterization in the first several chapters is either typical or unnecessary. When the real conflict finally develops two-thirds through the book, it's not even the conflict that the main character suggests will occur. I kept hoping something big would develop, but it just fell so short of my already low expectations. The end was very anticlimactic and even felt rushed. I read a lot of books at this level of reading, but this one is not on par even for that low level. I'm a high school English teacher and I am really sorry that this was the pick for summer reading of incoming sophomores. That's the last time we will let a science teacher choose the novel.

Mitty Blake is a high school student that does not care much for school. He does not even want to be anywhere near a school. He has a huge Science project about an infectious disease. He is away when he finds some scabs. These scabs help him pick his project, Small Pox. He no idea what Small Pox did to people, or even what it is. He inhaled these smallpox scabs; he has no idea if these are infectious or if they are not. He started doing as much research as he could on this topic. The only thing that he found is information about how dangerous the disease is. He does more research and finds nothing else. Mitty is only trying to save his own life. Terrorist kidnapped him when he was walking through New York. What do these terrorist want with him? Will Mitty die of Small Pox?Code Orange is a good book. I give it a 4 out of 5 stars. I thought it was a good book, but not the best book I have ever read. I like how the author did not end the chapters in a boring way; she kind of left it as a cliffhanger for the next chapter. The author made me want to keep reading to find out what would happen. I thought that the author did a very good job describing what was going. The way she included realistic elements in this story was awesome. Bioterrorism is a tough topic to write about and to read about, but this book presented it in an intriguing way. This is one of the better books that I have read this year. The characters in the book are well developed and make the story real. The best character was Mitty. He is a teenage boy that is intelligent, courageous and innovative.

The book is a middle school level book (6th - 7th grade). As a college student, I enjoyed the plot. It is fun, exciting, and full of suspension. The beginning of the book sets the entire story. I was disappointed with the ending, but the rest of the book is very detailed.

Mitty Blake is a carefree hero. He is an average student, likes his parents and sister, and breezes through school with average grades. Everyone likes Mitty. When the terrorists kidnap him to get the smallpox virus scabs to destroy New York City, he uses what he learned from his parents to survive. Kids need to read books about good families and good kids. One of my favorite sections was when his worried sister came home to be with their parents while Mitty missing. A lot of books have single parent households, dysfunctional siblings and emotional problems. Code Orange had a close knit family, siblings who like each other, and an average guy who solved a major problem using his head. Code Orange is my favorite Caroline Cooney book.

I've practiced and taught meditation for years, read everything on Eastern thought that I found from Alan Watts and Baba Ram in 1972 to Jon Kabat-Zinn and E. Tolle in this 'new age'. One day while in the library, I came across this slim volume and took it home.I found this thoughtful, humorous account to be one of the best books ever on the personal journey of spirit. I loved it so much, after returning it to the library, I down loaded a copy to my Kindle from Amazon. A great read and a very thought provoking volume that should be on everyone's list who is sincerely looking for a well rounded view. I've ordered his other books as well and look forward to continuing sharing this journey with Tim. Thanks for this book!

I've shared this book with at least a dozen people since someone first shared it with me nearly 15 years ago. An excellent, insightful, and entertaining read well worth the time spent with it. Perhaps problematic for folks actively struggling against dogmatic tendencies or elements of pride and/or identity. As with all teaching--take from it that which proves truthful and useful, and leave the rest.

Everyone who writes a book about Buddhism wants to be a guru, or at least that’s the writing posture they present. Tim Ward is an exception, and that’s the most interesting, refreshing aspect of “What the Buddha Never Taught”. He recounts his experiences as a novice practitioner of the Thai forest monastery tradition with insight and honesty. His candor is refreshing, especially given the mind numbing prose that characterizes so many books about Buddhism. His description of his “meeting” with Thai forest master Ajahn Chah is absolutely chilling. If you like candid books about Buddhist practice, you have to read this one.

A semi interesting account of a month spend in a monastery. The author seemed to lack an understanding of Theravada Buddhism. His struggle to use the discipline of the monastery to his advantage was interesting.

This book has been around for a long time, but its message is still pertinent, especially for newcomers to Buddhist thought and practice. Tim Ward describes his visit to a Thai jungle monastery in an engaging manner. Ward focuses on the excesses of hierarchy, regulations, and austerity -- none of which are central to the Buddha's basic teachings. Ward relates his first-hand experiences with serenity and doubt, with temptation and laughter, and with suffering and insight. In many ways, it is an ideal book for readers who are just beginning their explorations of Buddhism, seasoned travelers will revel in it as well.Stanley Krippner, Ph.D.

This is a sweet book of self discovery on a path that many Westerners have taken over the past forty years using Asian ideas and practices to come to terms with an inner world they find uncomfortable. Tim Ward ended up in the Western monastery in Thailand of the Buddhist monk Ajaan Cha who was teacher to Jack Kornfield and Ajaan Sumedho. Ajaan Cha is the lineage head of the many monasteries Sumedho has help found in England, America, Australia, and elsewhere around the world. By the time Tim arrived in 1985 Ajaan Cha had been disabled by water on the brain for more than five years. Tim's tale of the monastery is revealing of the outer flaws of monastic life and his own struggle to come to terms with them. Monks influenced by Ajaan Cha and his students often promote monastic life as the answer to life's problems. The world Tim reveals is all too human. There are personalities, there is blind submission to Thai culture which treats monks almost as magical persons. Laypersons earn merit for themselves in this life and future lives by feeding and serving the monks, and the monks rationalize what they know to be a way too simple understanding of Buddhism because it maintains their lifestyle. Tim befriends another novice with whom he can talk about all these contradictions. The friend leaves and, although apparently not there much longer, Tim becomes really angry about what he feels are compromises. The anger is palpable and the reader senses how out of proportion it is to the inconsistencies in monastic life. The book is redeemed and Tim begins to understand what he has been missing when the very monks he dumps his anger on respond to him with authentic compassion. Their monastic life has imbued in them both a love and equanimity so they are not at all hooked by what they recognize as clearly Tim's discontents whatever the actual problems of Thai monasteries may be.This is an engaging book. There are wonderful descriptions of the discomforts engendered by mosquitoes, ants, scorpions, and snakes of a countryside which had once been wild and was giving way to civilization. The dialogue between Tim and his friend, his taunting of others in the monastery, his easy explanation of Buddhist ideas make for interesting reading. The book flows nicely and, as reader, I looked forward to what challenge would come next for Tim. These days Buddhism is presented as a cure all touted on the covers of popular magazines. The Dalai Lama has become a hero. While Buddhism can offer some people relief from their problems, it has a long diverse history as a religion with all kinds of awkwardnesses not revealed by its promoters. It is refreshing to get a look into one man's experience in a monastery. It has many familiar ordinary human failures along with redeeming qualities. And of course, other people in other monastic settings have had quite different experiences. I think this is an important book to read for both Buddhist practitioners and people for whom Buddhism has been placed on a pedestal.Charlie Fisher author of Dismantling Discontent: Buddha's Way Through Darwin's World

Everyone can be a fundamentalist. This "problem" is not limited to Christians, however much we Buddhists would like to think so. Tim Ward shows how Theravada Buddhism, with its stress on the "perfect Dhamma" and hundreds of rules, can be corrupted in practice. Example: monks seem to take advantage of ignorant laypeople. Not surprising; monks are people, too. Example: cliques form in the monastery, and monks can be catty and nasty to each other. Not surprising, of course, but you never hear about it. Example: monks aren't allowed to kill anything. So, they take a layperson with them into the jungle, and say, "Get rid of this", pointing at weeds or whatever needs to be cleared. This is not consistent with the spirit of the rules, but it follows the letter of the rules. Thus the problems of literalism raise their head. Tim Ward is a gentle, well meaning traveller who does all Buddhists a favor by showing that Buddhism can fall victim to the problems of all religions.

Holy mackerel, what a load of banal garbage ! Perfect if you're a starry eyed, "touchy feely" idealist. Some examples of things to do: "Become a citizen activist", "Become a songwriter lyricist","Find your own food" and the silliness goes on and on. Don't waste your time, money or intellectual capital with this tripe.More travel adventure, less transcendental soul searching would have helped. I don't read a book to be preached to.

This book is full of creative ideas for adding fun, adventurous, fulfilling activities to your life. I especially like that it is so well organized, with specific activities listed under general categories, making it easy to find something that fits your personality! It is a fun book to leaf through and gather ideas, and also to see that if others can do it, you can too! Although my own bucket list activity is included in this book (traveling the world), I loved reading up on some of the many ideas here, some of which never even occurred to me.

A really fun book of creative and unusual Things To Do. Gave me ideas on new adventures to experience, ways to recharge and inspiration to Just Do It

Meh.

Gifted this to my friend for Christmas, he loved it. Found the book very interesting.

Fun gift for my Dad! He is really enjoying it!

I expected another think. But Is ok.

Great book. I have a number of ideas that should make my retirement more interesting.

I love this book for the fact that helps me keep track of all the characters, remember the plots associated and most importantly, remember the names and the clans! I love the show but struggle with the many plots and names. This author has done a great job in capturing the plots in short and effective language. Great effort.

I think it is always good to have a recap on the story line and know more about the entire game of thrones word. As an avid fan, I found this book to be rather refreshing as it is something different from the other books.Interesting stuff and is suitable for beginners

If I were the author i'd have been embarrassed to put my name on it, because this book is a mess. Basically a scene by scene, wildly out of order description of the (TV) version of events and characters from "Thrones". The book is littered with misspellings, incorrect punctuation and warped grammer, full of idiotic mistakes and mawkish misinterpretations of the most basic story elements. Provides no new take on "Thrones" and nothing a die-hard fan probably doesn't already realize. There are several other books about "Thrones" that are better then this one, such as "GOT Season one Ultimate unofficial guide" and "Winter is coming: Symbols and hidden meanings in GOT". While these other books are by no means masterful works on their own they are still much more interesting and well written then this ebook..

Tad out of date. Feels like something from the internet that got printed.

The only draw back is there are no photos of the characters.

Yay! At last, a book that will definitely help me with understandingthe movie more!I've seen this movie on HBO, but never really seen the first part of itso it was really hard for me to understand the characters of the movie.Glad I found this book and my purchase is really worth the price!Totally loving this, and if you would love to know more about the character'sof this movie, you really have to buy this book, first! :)

There are so many grammatical errors in this. I guess it's an Ebook that became published somehow. I was expecting WAY more.

I really like GOT, so this is fun for my extra reading on it.

I'm amazed at the low quality of the binding. It separated after 2 days of light use. View the pictures-- it came completely off, and the book is about to split into about 12 different sections. This is crazy. After returning it, I'll update this review with information on how good they were at returning the book.

My son loves this book and the previous book in the series, but the binding is AWFUL!!!! Luckily, I’m a book binder, so I’m repairing the book myself, but not every kid is as lucky to have this kind of crafty mom. Seriously though, I’ve never seen a more poorly bound book. Ours broke after the first day.I’m still giving it 3 stars because my son loves this series so much. I hope the third book is bound better than the first two!!!!

We returned it. The binding broke as soon as we opened it. Returned and waited for a new one. That came super fast, but once again within 5 minutes the binding broke. The book was poorly manufactured which is too bad because my daughter was super excited to read it.

Cheap binding failed, started falling apart after a day of use, great stories though, my 10 year old is hooked on it

Kid asked me to purchase this book. She found it at a brick and mortar. It appears to read like a comic book or Japanese animation book. She was very happy when she opened her gift bag, with this book inside. Cam on time in perfect condition

Falls apart immediately! Terrible make.

The story is great and my son loved it, but the book fell apart after reading it once. Poorly put together.

A gift for Christmas and quality of binding barely lasted the day. I wrote the publisher and received an out of office message. I will see what kind of response I get to consider more stars. The book itself my son loves.
