I've come to really appricate the GURPS system. The High-Tech rules is a softcover book with loads of information.GURPS is known for the level of complexity and desire to be as accurate as possible. Many of their systems use a simplified version and this book has loads of information for tech 5 (1730 starting) through tech 8 up to (2050 where tech 9 starts). I can’t express enough if you are a new military mom, read this. It’s not one of those hokey ‘mom let go of your kid’ books. It’s nothing like that. I’m a free range parent (most of the time) and the information shared in this book is beyond grateful. When your child volunteers for the military because they want to, not because they have to, not because that’s the only choice, but because something in their bones tell them it’s who and where they should be, you let your child fly...you’re gonna cry a lot at the coop when their gone, but this book is gonna help. A LOT.

This book was/is a helpful tool of what a parent goes through as their child decides to be a 1%-er. The author takes you through her own life as a mother sending four children off to different branches of the military. From boot camps, deployment, marriage, births, death, and PTSD this book was amazing. But be ready - Kleenex DOES NOT come provided.
This is a great read for all military family and civilians alike. The range of emotions that I experienced while reading ranged from outbursts of laughter to child-like sobbing. As the mother of a United States Marine, I feel that this book was a much needed beacon of hope, insuring me that I am never alone. Abdi writes beautifully as he tells the brutal tale of his childhood in war ravaged Somalia Even when he moved on to Kenya it was still a perilous time for him. He wanted so badly to become American which was a land he knew from watching movies.Through chance and a good bit of luck he found support through the BBC and NPR before he won his golden ticket to get a visa to move to the country of his dreams.Once in the US he had to make many adjustments as he learned to live in Maine.This whole life experience would have broken many but instead it made Abdi stronger and instead of hardening his heart the adversity made his heart bigger.Please read this book....you will not regret it.
Once upon a time I was an avid reader of non-fiction. Now, as a 70 something senior, I gravitate toward lighter escapism fiction. I heard about this book on NPR and decided to check it out on Amazon. It was all the positive reviews without a single 3 stars or lower that prompted me to download it to my Kindle. Am I glad I did. The writing flowed, the story captivated. I could not bring myself to put it down. If like me you rarely or never read memoirs or non-fiction, I urge you to make an exception and read Call Me American. It is a heart wrenching story of what it is like to live in a war-torn country. It is also a story of hope and perseverance that will lift your spirits. I hope Mr. Iftin has another amazing book in the works.
I first heard of Abdi on NPR. I sat in my grocery's store's parking lot for 50 min. to hear the whole interview by a British reporter as he talked every few days with Abdi while he was still in Kenya and trying to get his green card. It was scary, astonishing and life-affirming. Abdi is now in the US and I hope to hear him at a book signing in Tempe or Phoenix, AZ. He writes so well. Do NOT MISS this book.

Somehow, this child, recognizing the futility of the tribal warfare, grasps onto the few elements of American culture that he can find, teaches himself English, and imagines a future for himself in America. You have to read the book, but you will understand, it is nothing short of incredible that he actually makes it. I learned so much from his story. It's clear to me now that we need to become a more welcoming country for these incredible people from desperate war torn areas. More people need to read this book.
I finished it on Saturday. Beautifully written. (With no ghost writer, people! He really did teach himself English AND can write and speak better than most of us.) I could hardly breathe the whole time and when I finished I didn't know what to do... I cried a little for all the terror and devastation. And then, everywhere I have gone since then, I see things more than a little differently. Your book is incredible Abdi Iftin. Your survival is mind-blowing, and we are all blessed by your ability to tell the story. I don't know how you remembered all of those days. Each moment of life seemed like another threading of the needle, under extreme conditions.
I have read a lot of memoirs and novels, but have never read anything like this book before. It has opened my eyes to what those seeking asylum in America endure. I thought I knew, just anecdotally from news stories, but I didn't know. I still can't truly know, because to know is to experience. But Abdi Iftin has invited us into his life with a stunning memoir, and he's done it through beautiful and thoughtful writing. This book also gave me a perspective on America that I have never considered, and I hope it will allow me not to take for granted our freedoms and the peace in which we are so fortunate to live, and so many died to ensure for us. To this brave young man: thank you for writing this book. I wish you much peace and hope your family is safe and healthy. To anyone considering reading this book: I can't recommend it enough.
I couldn't put down this memoir once I'd picked it up. Like others, I bought this book after hearing the author's story on NPR. I needed to hear what happened after he made it to America: what was life like? Where did he go, what did he do? These questions were answered, but just as compelling was everything that preceded the NPR story: his parents' lives in the bush herding animals, his early years in Mogadishu, and his family's survival through decades of war.Before I opened the cover I knew little of Somalia, and it is now a country that has texture and taste in my mind. For most of the book I felt a sense of anger and mourning due to the senseless violence, the US's role in destabilizing the country, and the utter destruction of a vibrant culture and people. But the author helped paint a picture--his picture--of a nation that could rise again, and of a rich future for his homeland. The book leaves the reader with this hope, in spite of an epilogue filled with foreboding following the 2016 election and growing anti-immigrant rhetoric: a fear that he never thought he'd find in the US.I am grateful for this story for many reasons: to know and appreciate a beautiful culture I didn't know existed; for the reminder of why it's important to resist extremism and hateful rhetoric; and as a reminder to practice empathy towards others. This book has also left me with a heavy question: knowing these lessons, what will I do with it? To that, I do not yet have an answer.

A good addition to my collection - the matter is clear, well laid out and the language is simple and precise. Gary McGraw has been a pioneer of sorts in striving for Software Security - as the success of Cigital proves. His clarity of thought comes through well in this book.The one space I see need for change is that this book addresses the traditional software development scenario. As more of the world moves to Agile and DevOps, this model will need to be adapted to fit into ever shrinking and more focused development cycles - I look forward to an update from Dr. McGraw on security for the DevOps world.
Most insightful book regardless that it was published some time ago. Everything that is covered is applicable and needed today. This is more than just a light guide and advice; this is a complete and heavy book that all developers and especially those who want to improve security in software within their community. Gary McGraw's writings are very good. Excellent in fact. I highly recommend his books along with this one.
Great resource. Copyright 2005. Included Fortify Source Code Analysis Demo CD/Software is also dated 2005. Unfortunately, Fortify was acquired by HP, which appears to no longer provide a "rulepack" which is required for installation. I searched Fortify's site and HP's without success.
Good book if you need background on how to go about getting a software security plan in place and functioning.

This book was prescribed for a course I took in 2011-12. While the book covers the fundamentals well, the enclosed CD, which provides a copy of Fortify software didn't work. Assignments using the software on the CD was part of our course, and since the CD didn't work, the quality of course (not to mention the grades) suffered.As it turns out Gary McGraw offered fortify as a freeware, and without properly identifying the impact on this product( the book), he sold the software to HP. This is another case of lack of thorough due diligence prior to closing mergers and acquisitions. Unfortunately as always is the case customers ( in this case the students) were the losers.Of course, part of missed due diligence was our faculty that had not vetted if everything worked before conducting the course.Good book if only updated with relevant tools.
Written by an intelligent and well-qualified author who speaks plainly. McGraw alone is a diamond in the rough.

Despite the book's somewhat questionable origins, I found the content to be beneficial, even essential, for my own esoteric studies and for those interested in expanding their own understanding of the ancient teachings, mainly when talking about Eastern esotericism, of course. There is a lot of commentary in the book, but the deliberations are fascinating and vital if you're going to try to understand the book's deeper concepts.Essentially, when you die, you enter another state of consciousness. Everything you see and experience in the afterlife appears real, but--like a dream--the only genuine reality hides behind the myriad of illusions you confront. If you train yourself in this state of consciousness, the life you're living right now, and discipline yourself in the esoteric lore that has survived the ages, when you die, you'll find the path to Absolute Freedom. There are many names for this Truth, so I use more generic references. Some call it Love, others call it God, and--of course--there's the title Nirvana.Without a guide to help direct you to the great light of truth, you are very likely to interpret an illusion as reality or you might simply succumb to the desires which those illusions instill. Perhaps you have unfinished business on this plane of existence. Maybe you still want to experience sex more, have a family, or help people. Maybe you died unexpectedly and you're confused and want to return to those you knew. Maybe you're angry and want to punish the world you felt treated you terribly. Regardless of what motivation overcomes you, the illusions will alter and intensify accordingly and create images you will mistake as being real and necessary to gravitate towards or runaway from--aimlessly even, until you're hopelessly lost. Thus, you are reborn.Although the text seems to indicate that the training process is relatively simple, I'm convinced that it takes multiple lifetimes to really train your consciousness to know what to remember and what to do in the afterlife to avoid rebirth. Another name for this forgetfulness is afterlife retrogression. Many experience it, and--alas--many are reincarnated, their past decisions determining their future circumstances in the next life.What this book does is begin the long-long-long journey towards natural transmutation. Your body is a temple, the greatest Great Pyramid ever built. Every body you inhabit is equally grand. Without True Education, though, the pyramid remains vacant, unused. It becomes a tomb. If you open the doors to the tomb and rise again to hear the Word, you might learn the path to true salvation. Does any of this rhetoric sound familiar? Everywhere the teachings of Eastern and Western ideologies blend, but the Tibetan Book of the Dead clarifies what is basically important in this life: avoid afterlife retrogression, break the cycle of necessity, and become One.For a greater appreciation of these concepts, I recommend the writings of Manly Hall (namely "Death to Rebirth: Five Essays by Manly Hall"), a translation of the Corpus titled The Way of Hermes, Jewish mystic teachings found in the Bahir and the Sefer Yetzirah, Platonic and Neoplatonic philosophy that can be found in the Dialogues and The Enneads, and, of course, the Egyptian Book of the Dead.
Newer edition of the old Evans-Wentz favorite. Added forward, original text intact. Good bet for those of us who have lost their original copy and can't afford a first edition, new or otherwise..
There are far better versions of this book out there written by exiles from Tibet. I'm sure ol Walt had great intentions, but the first five pages of this book made my head want to explode with all the footnotes, parenthetical and asides.
Still reading it again for the first time in years. Heavy duty but relevant with respect to thinking of the important issues of life and death. Of course it's a magnificent classic. Thanks for the speedy delivery. It will take me a while to digest the work at my nightly pace. Much food for thought with respect to right living and pondering the nature of life as well as the afterlife.
Bought for someone who just experienced a death at her office of a young person. This is what I read after my NDE and so I thought this might help her.
Read it well and wisely. What more could be said than already has been? If one doesn't know what they're buying, this book will be an adventure for first time trippers, scholars, and mystics alike. Akin to many scriptural texts, the book needs be read aloud and studied with care for its illuminatory properties to influence oneself adequately. There are many interpretations and commentaries included for those new to such texts, and overall, these are worth the additional time and interest, if somewhat predictable for the familiar.
Cleared up a number of questions I had and helped me to correlate and verify certain kinds of information.
Excellent exposition of the possibilities that arise after the soul withdraws from the body. It doesn't really matter if one believes or not. What matters in this book is that it makes one reflect upon all of the possibilities not only after death but during this lifetime. One becomes more conscious of one's current activities!
