Review
"A riveting read on how the law tears at the precious bonds that tie families together, even making legal strangers of kin, and what we can do about it. A clarion call for a paradigm shift in how the law ought to intersect with the family." -Dr. Kathryn Edin, Bloomberg Distinguished Professor, Johns Hopkins University "This wonderful book, written by one of the most interesting and thoughtful young scholars working in the field of family law today, moves beyond the stalled polarized debates to advocate for a new approach to the law's role in regulating the family that is both sensible and somewhat radical. Huntington argues that contemporary family law largely fails to even pursue what should be its overriding purposes-to proactively support stable, positive family relationships, and resolve disputes between parents in ways that reduce, rather than exacerbate, the costs of family conflict. This proposed shift from a crisis intervention model of family regulation to one based on prevention and repair offers a critique and a model for reform that is both insightful and thought-provoking. Failure to Flourish is a book that should be read by every academic, policy expert, and informed citizen with an interest in children's welfare." -Elizabeth Scott, Harold R. Medina Professor of Law, Columbia"Failure to Flourish is a sober but ultimately hopeful examination of the legal and political changes needed to help today's diverse families develop and sustain more positive, nurturing relationships. A must-read for policy-makers and family advocates." -Stephanie Coontz, Professor of History and Family Studies, The Evergreen State College, Olympia WA"Clare Huntington's Failure to Flourish is both an insightful critique of how the legal system fails families, and an optimistic roadmap for reform. I highly recommend this book to legal and psychological professionals, students, and to anyone concerned with reforming the legal system to better serve children and their families." -Robert E. Emery, Ph.D., Professor of Psychology, Director of the Center for Children, Families, and the Law, University of Virginia"Excellent for collections on family law, gender studies, and education...Highly recommended. All readership levels." -D. Schultz, Hamline University, CHOICE"Failure to Flourish is a brave, rigorously produced, carefully researched, and politically astute book. Huntington seeks to persuade a wide swath of the American political landscape, and at every turn she chooses her words carefully to accomplish that end." -Wendy A. Bach, Associate Professor of Law, University of Tennessee College of Law, Michigan Law Review"Huntington persuasively argues that American law contributes to this crisis by generally failing to consider the well-being of families." -Maxine Eichner, Harvard Law Review2015 PROSE AWARD HONORABLE MENTION FOR LAW AND LEGAL STUDIES

Readable, accessible (for non lawyers), and wise, Failure to Flourish, points to critical issues for all of us working on social justice and raising families to consider. The "New Jim Crow" of family law -- has the power to transform public institutions and public discourse.

I love James Michener's writing and am going to Spain in spring so wanted some insight into Spanish culture. First, the book was written in 1968 during Franco's last year's as dictator so some of Michener's views are now dated. Starting in the most remote, under-populated portion of Spain put me off from reading the rest of the book. But several weeks later, I picked it up and tried again and found his deep knowledge of the culture, people, food and life of Spain to be fascinating (once he got past Extremadura). I have read a few current guidebooks and a history of Spain, but this was by far, the book that gave me a real sense of Spain and what I should look for when we travel there. There is a wonderful chapter on Barcelona and Catalonia which gave me a deeper understanding of the current situation between Catalonia and Madrid. I would have given it 5 stars except for that awful first chapter and the last chapter that was all about bullfighting, the bulls, the matadors ad nauseum. If you're into bullfighting, this is the chapter for you, otherwise just skip over it like I did.
I read this during a recent trip to Spain to get away from the craziness here. His tales were a lovely addition to the trip, and although over 50 years old, amazingly relevant to current events. Michener was fascinated by Spanish history in that they had literally boatloads of gold coming to them, but they became quite backwards for a very long time. They used all the wealth in a quest to "defend the faith" rather than invest in needed agriculture, and expelled endless Jews and Moors who contributed expertise, to purify the country. That, along with inept and sometimesderanged rulers, was enough to overwhelm all the advantages they started out with. There are also a lot of personal anecdotes and adventures that help to decide where to go and to appreciate what you see.
A brilliant book, endlessly fascinating and including immensely varied perspectives on everything concerning Spain. It is not a travelogue, but an analysis of the Spanish people, their way of life, their psychology, their history, art, music, etc., etc. Basing himself in a number of different cities, many of them small cities that are not often featured in books on Spain. But through his conversations with people in all these places, he gains insights into all aspects of Spanish life. Michener's acquainance with the country is old and intimate, and he is deeply knowledgeable about Spanish art, music, literature, drama, the bullfight, and discusses all these topics, and many more, not in a lengthy, well-ordered and complete study of the subject, but as each topic is suggested by events, conversations, buildings, paintings, music, and other "encounters" he has during his many visits to Spain. The writer's style is magnificent, simple and unaffected, but inspiringly lyrical when he turns to topics that he loves particularly, art, music, birds, the bulls, etc.A deeply satisfying book and one that the lover of Spain will want to return to time and again.
Unlike his historical novels (Hawaii etc) that I read 40 or so years ago, I was thrilled that this was a memoir. I'm planning to visit Spain next year. Michener created a masterpiece by combining multiple trips into stories organized by area/region. The depth and breadth of his knowledge of history, art, literature, architecture etc is amazing. He hooked up with a photographer and the combination of narrative and pictures is outstanding.
I lived for a while in Spain. I was overwhelmed with a sense of the pageantry of history. Greeks and Romans, medieval conquerors, biblical characters and monarchs had trod this very ground. However I travelled mostly in blind awe. It was then that I chanced upon an American edition of Michener's Iberia in a small magazine and book stall. Iberia covers it all in encyclopedic detail. It's dated now [1966] and Spain sadly has been wrenched into Starbucks sameness. But the ancient footprints remain. You need fore knowledge. You might want to take this book with you if you plan an Iberian visit. Michener is awesomely experienced in art, history and global politics. He is an entertaining story teller too. P.S. Spain is 3/4th. the size of Texas but with a vastly more long and complicated history in comparison to size. Michener does a pretty good job in describing Texas in his book Texas. That fellow sure got around [1907-1997.]
James Michener's Iberia: Spanish Travels and Reflections chronicles the author's travels in Spain and his long-term love affair with all things Spanish. Published in 1968, the text is of course dated. Iberia has chapters on Badajoz, Toldeo, Cordoba, Las Marismas, Sevilla, Madrid, Salamanca, Pamplona, Barcelona, Teruel, Santiago de Compostela, and Bull fighting.Michener devoted parts of several chapters, and one complete chapter, to bull fighting. He was a passionate aficionado of bullfights, even though the vast majority of the bull fights he saw were profoundly disappointing.Michener is known for his long, rather slow, books and this one is nearly 800 pages of reminiscences. He can take many pages to describe hardly anything, but the reader hardly cares as the writing is so good. Readers interested in Michener's three pilgrimages to Santiago de Compostela will be disappointed by the lack of detail about those trips. The 1968 hardback edition features photographs by Robert Vavra, a friend of Michener. They are black and white and rather self-consciously "artistic."
The original publication of Iberia was 1968 and I read it then as I was a fan of Michener. I enjoyed it then but even more so the second time I read it in 2017 as I had just come back from a trip to Spain and Portugal. Iberia is a travel diary by Michener who was a very curious traveler and found many interesting people to chat with and many interesting places to visit while in Spain. I recommend it to anyone who has a particular interest in or is traveling to Spain.

I talk about how The Tower, the Zoo, and the Tortoise is the funniest book you will ever read about losing a child, which of course, sounds crazy. Well this book is the funniest book you will ever read about surviving breast and prostate (her father) cancer. In both cases I think it's because nobody can make you both laugh and cry like a good humor writer. You know you shouldn't be laughing, but you can't help it, because the writing is just so good, so insightful, and of course, so funny. But a big part of that is that while beast cancer is the overarching theme of this book, it's really about Kelly Corrigan's family, and what a family they are. Still, it's the wit and wisdom of Corrigan that makes this book so good. It reminds me a little bit of another book that I loved, called Funny in Farsi. Both writers lure you in with what seems like a mundane tale about their wild and crazy families, only to deliver a laugh out loud punch line at the end. A huge thumbs up.
I enjoyed every single page of this beautiful story! My sister had recommended a different book by this author. But I always feel the need to start with their first book. Even though this isn't a series, it's just what I do. I had no idea it was her story of cancer. If I would have known, I surely would have skipped it. My last 3 books read(not all on purpose): "When Breath Becomes Air" 5stars "The Bright Hour" 4stars, And, "The Best of Us" 5stars. All 4 are people dealing with cancer. I have enjoyed them all. The Middle Place is funny, sad, and so honest. KELLY CORRIGAN TELLS IT LIKE IT IS, in a way that made me feel like I was with her the entire time. I felt like I could walk up to her family, as if they would know me. I like her style of writing, and absolutely loved this book, and Greenie too! I am onto her next book "Lift"
I hate to say someone’s life story isn’t interesting but I know so many people with breast cancer so maybe this book seemed too run of the mill. It was a quick read though and I hope the author and her Dad are well
I enjoyed reading this story but the epilogue was so poignant and real. A tribute to a generation of hard-working mothers with good parenting skills.
Loved this special book where Kelly showed her warts with no hesitation. I snort laughed while reading. She was full on with her joy, her fears, her life.
A good story teller - as a breast cancer survivor I cried and laughed. She tells it like it really is
I loved this story of life and strength, family and love. The Middle Place helped me to appreciate even more deeply the spirit of a young woman - Kelly Corrigan - who, like my beloved daughter, had to surrender to her baldness and her new identity post diagnosis. This kind of "put your feet down on the floor every morning" living takes enormous courage and humor. It all comes through in this memoir. It also takes sheer guts to write about a journey that is both scary and unpredictable while making oneself vulnerable in the process. It's also the truth that sets the spirit free.Kelly Corrigan loves her enthusiastic and attentive father. I loved mine for similar reasons. Daughters who are this cherished by their dads survive things. Kelly also had to beat her cancer while her own father battled his. Watching it outside; experiencing it inside, all this while raising her precious children. Speaking of which, every mother will adore reading about the tender moments of mom and child, those quiet, gorgeous times that we sigh, "I love being a mom"! I think of Kelly's mom and siblings here with seeing two people they loved going through treatments at the same time. What faith this family must have.I enjoyed meeting Kelly's husband on the page. A spouse who is our port in the storm - when the waves are rocking and rolling the boat - is a blessing from heaven above. There is a refreshing authenticity in The Middle Place because Kelly Corrigan rips the face right off pretension with her humor and story-telling ability so I say high five on this book. I say bravo to this young and very gifted writer.Mary Jane Hurley BrantPsychotherapistBryn Mawr, PA
Someone said every book is ultimately about death. That thought applies to Kelly Corrigan's memoir, The Middle Place. Corrigan, a young wife and mother in her thirties faces her own mortality with a breast cancer diagnosis. At the same time she desperately strategizes with her family of origin to find the best treatment for her beloved father, also diagnosed with cancer. She is caught in the middle place between protecting her children and her father. Death is the centerpiece of this plot. The reader wants cures for both of these wonderful people. But Corrigan balances grim facts with wit and humor. Her voice is chatty and intimate. She brings life and love to the pages with portraits of her father, her funny brothers, her long-suffering mom, her darling husband and two cute kids. Corrigan takes time to honor those she loves with words. Her texts brim with specificity and life. She doesn't leave out the struggles. When she is jealously annoyed to find her husband Edward talking on the phone to his parents, she knows she is being irrational and unfair. Her husband's kindness and acceptance of her craziness makes the reader love him even more. Corrigan contrasts her love for her father, which is total and unrestrained, to the love for her mother which has limits. She shows real life, and flawed people coming together in crisis. Most of us try to keep thoughts of our inevitable demise in check, but with Kelly and her family the reality of death is too clearly defined by results from the medical lab. While the reader cannot deny the pain of this memoir, Corrigan finds irony. With death as the initial plot Corrigan writes about life. She spells out the details of everyday life and relationships, not death. She lives life with humor and passion even as she is faced with dying. Each day matters. Each relationship matters. This facing-death memoir is really about life.

This book describes the loveliest old walking trails. With detailed maps, GPS data and route fotos of outstanding points for better orientation. And lots of interesting facts worth knowing about the Islands of Dionysos.
Already when you sail into the harbour, you can sense the island's tremendous cultural diversity. On the left, you peer up at the enormous portal of a classical temple; on the right, you glide past a small Byzantine chapel and, towering above the huddled Cycladic city, a Venetian kástro from the Middle Ages. The city, dating back 5000 years, is one of the oldest inhabited places in the world.
When you penetrate further in to the island, you are surprised by the diversity of the fertile landscapes. An enormous rugged mountain massif – consisting of granite, gneiss and marble with three peaks rising to an altitude of almost 1000 metres – forms the background for the green heart of the island, the Tragéa plains, covered with olive groves and ancient oaks. Stretching further westwards is extensive farming land, until it meets a never-ending landscape of dunes along the seaside. Connoisseurs of small bathing bays can find wonderful spots along the rocky east coast.
However, it is not just nature which surprises with its enormous abundance. People have also left outstanding buildings during their long habitation of the island. Except in the lively Mediterranean harbour city, they tended – for reasons of security – to live in compact mountain villages which allow us, even today, to trace the tracks of old Greece. In addition to the white-washed cube houses, there are also a great number of castle-like residences from the Venetian nobility of the Middle Ages as well as fortress-like Orthodox and even Catholic monasteries. Art-lovers find not only the remains of classical temple complexes, but also monumental statues worked on by artists and left behind in ancient quarries. The Byzantine chapels from a later period house Early Medieval frescoes.
