Grade 3 Up-The same little blue engine "that could" is back, with a new author and illustrator. This time it is encouraging readers to choose the track that best suits their interests and talents and forge ahead on life's journey. Dorfman suggests that though there will be "deep river valleys" and "high mountaintops," dark tunnels and uncharted territory, "I think I can" should be their clarion cry. The rhyming text often does not scan and forced rhymes such as "toured"/"aboard" are sprinkled throughout. Ong's illustrations feature pastel colors and a train that looks very much like its forebear. Children and adults of different ethnic groups and genders greet it on its route. While this is a pleasant book with a much-needed message of confidence and perseverance, that message can only be understood by older children and adults. To pair it with illustrations that have a definitely "young" look makes for an uncomfortable fit. And this text breaks no ground that has not already been mined in Dr. Seuss's Oh, the Places You'll Go! (Random, 1990). I actually gave this book to a high school graduate headed for college. The words are beautifully poetic and a great guide for life in general! I think everyone should have to read it not just the little ones. Beautiful illustrations as well. I love this book. It is a great book about the journey of life; with the ups and downs, including the bumps along the way. A great read for any age, but good to read to kids.
Such a great book!! I bought 3 of these for my kids and throughout the years have had special people in their lives write them a message on the inside. I plan to give to them when they graduate high school. This book makes for a great gift.

I originally bought this book for my oldest son, who was obsessed with trains when he was three. Although he liked the book's pictures and rhymes, he did not really understand the "story" and grew bored with it. Now that he is seven, I reread this to him and he really enjoyed it for its message. We stopped at the end of each page and discussed what he thought it meant, which was pretty much spot on for the most part. I saw online that a dad had all of his daughter's teachers sign a copy of "Oh, the Places You'll Go!" throughout the years and presented it to her at her graduation party. I am going to steal that idea with this book.I also read this at the end of the year to my 6th graders to kind of remind them of all they accomplished during their first year of middle school and to help them make smart choices in the future. As a language arts teacher, I also appreciate the metaphors and deeper level of thinking needed to engage in a meaningful conversation with my students.
Cute book. Actually has very valuable life lessons for anyone. Basically find YOUR place in the world. And keep trying until you figure that place out. I bought this for my adult son moving away from home to another state.
Such an adorable book! We read it online for free through We Give Books and loved it so much we immediate bought it for our daughter. It's one of her favorites and my husband and I both really love it too. It's nice to have an entertaining book that also teaches a lesson rather than just reading silly book after silly book. I have since bought this book 3 more times to give as birthday presents.

I bought this the day it came out because I'm writing a book on the mental game of hockey that I can give to my clients and thought this was great timing to read this hockey book. There are 95 hockey stories in this book. 90 of them are GREAT and so vivid that you can smell the ice. 2 of the stories are ok and 3 of them suck. But thats ok because when you do the math on the price per story its still a great deal. I love how Wayne tells about his passion of hockey, discusses Gordie Howe playing different teams and games and more.If you are looking for tips. This isnt really the book for that but he does discuss how it comes down to Aggressiveness, passion and hard work of course.Hockey fans and players will love this awesome hockey book by Wayne Gretzky, " The Great One"
I absolutely loved this book - it starts with some amazing stories from the old history of hockey, most very interesting and heartwarming - it appears to me that Wayne Gretzky found a way to mention every single great old star of the game along with many current stars too. The book later goes on Into some of the stories from Gretzky's career too. All told, an absolutely great book!
I loved this book! We listen to it on CD in the car; so inspiring. We are new to hockey, but our family loves it! Gretzky is a class act. I make my son listen with me, and I'm so thankful for Gretzky's influence on him. We re-did his bedroom in a hockey theme with Greztky quotes I pulled from this book. Thank you #99ðŸ‘
Without doing proper reading about what the book was about before buying it I expected all of the stories to be about Gretzky's career. This book is about the history of hockey and all of its great players.
The book chronicles the development of hockey in North America with many personal anecdotes of individual players. It provides a rough framework of the development of the NHL. That said, Wayne is a far better hockey player than he is a writer.
I was surprised that this book ended up in many ways as a historical reference point for the sport of hockey. Pleasantly surprised. The book does cover the career of "99" but does not shy away from the long and deep history of the great sport which is hockey. Well worth your time.
I don't know much about the game and have a hard time following when I watch, but this book is a page-turner. The stories are so entertaining and I appreciate learning a bit about the game's history in between the stories. The book reads so easily and makes Gretzky comes across as a nice, down-to-earth, sensible, and humble man.
