Walsh's `Antibiotics' is a great introduction to the major classes of antibiotics and how each works, or doesn't, against cells, including not only bacteria but fungi and cancer cells. Each class of antibiotic is described, with step-by-step explanations of the chemical mechanics of the antibiotic on its target. The author discusses the growing problem of bacterial resistance to antibiotics and what steps are being taken, in terms of new drug development and new schemes for existing drug use, to overcome this problem.This was a very satisfying read. The information is dense but the author's style is reader-friendly and concise. The text is supported by many illustrations of the mechanics being described and these illustrations are detailed and explicit. I wanted an up-to-date, fairly technical book about antibiotic function and this book fit the bill better than I could have hoped. I look forward to going back to Walsh's book again for an even better understanding.
Legendary among natural product chemists, Christopher Walsh takes us through the detailed mechanisms of the biosynthetic pathways which common classes of antibiotics target. This is a valuable reference book because it allows us to see why antibiotics work on an atom-by-atom basis--something which most microbiology texts are incapable of doing. A strong background in organic chemistry is required to really understand the mechanisms outlined in the text, but coupled with an undergraduate organic textbook, this book is superior introduction to the overlapping worlds of medicinal, organic, and biosynthetic chemistry.
Christopher Walsh is a great chemist and a great writer alike; Dr. Timothy Wencewicz was also my favorite professor, and he collaborated on it. Really made me appreciate antibiotic chemistry.
This book was written by the eminent biochemist Christopher Walsh, whose broad research interests include the study of antibiotic action and resistance. It is extremely well written and organized, with an abundance of excellent illustrations. The approach is to give the reader an in depth but not exhausting coverage of several key topics in modern antibiotic research. Both novice and seasoned researcher will find much of value within the pages of this modest sized book. This important work is published at a period in time in which the resistance of a broad range of pathogenic bacteria to antibiotics has grown to alarming levels. At the same time, many pharmaceutical companies have recently abandoned research and development of new antibiotic agents.Walsh starts the book with a brief chapter on fundamental antibiotic concepts. Where do antibiotics come from? How do they work? How does resistance develop? He next launches into a thorough review of the main classes of antibiotics, interweaving antibiotic chemical structures and targets of the drugs with the underlying microbial physiology processes that are targeted. He begins with the various classes of bacterial cell wall inhibitors, emphasizing the members of the large beta-lactam class, as well as glycopeptides and moenomycin. Next he delves into the multiple classes of protein synthesis inhibitors. He makes full use of the latest structural data emerging from X-ray crystallography of ribosomal subunits, to illustrate the mechanisms of drug action. The methicillin resistance story in Staphylococcus, mediated by PBP2a, is detailed, as is the resistance mediated by the mosaic PBP genes in pneumococci. Macrolide resistance by ribosomal methylation and the fascinating story of vancomycin resistance by the restructuring the terminal D-alanine dipeptide target is covered (Walsh's laboratory was a major contributor to the vancomycin story).The next section of the book deals with the biosynthesis of antibiotics by producing organisms, primarily Streptomyces species. These chapters interweave the genetics and biochemistry of secondary metabolism. The signaling pathways used among producer organisms, as well as the gene regulation of the individual antibiotic biosynthetic genes, which are clustered on the chromosome are discussed. There is a chapter on each on polyketide antibiotic synthesis (erythromycins and tylosin) and non-ribosomal synthesis of peptide antibiotics (penicillins, bacitracin, vancomycin).The book ends with 3 chapters on identifying new antibiotics. A survey of targets, both "old" and new is presented, and several suggestions for novel ways to interfere with bacterial function are briefly reviewed. Another chapter examines identifying new chemical entities with antibacterial properties. The initial part of the chapter emphasizes combinatorial chemistry approaches. Unfortunately, this process to date has led to only sparse results, with some inhibitors identified. As Walsh notes, the conversion of a chemical inhibitor of an antibacterial enzyme target to a lead compound that can be subsequently endowed with all the myriad pharmacological properties necessary to be a drug is an extremely daunting task. The vast majority of compounds identified cannot be successfully modified to possess the properties necessary to be a drug. A second approach that he covers, the modification by genetic means of antibiotic producing organisms to synthesize new antibiotics (combinatorial biosynthesis), may be more promising.Walsh closes out the book with some thought provoking chapters around the proper use of antibiotics, and strategies to minimize resistance development. He highlights the antibiotic resistant pathogens of the 21st century, and the continued problem of methicillin resistant staphylococci and vancomycin resistant enterococci. He makes it abundantly clear that there has been no victory in the fight against infectious diseases, and the reports from the front lines are less than encouraging for the future.

This was on the list of resources I was given for people dealing with spiritually abusive churches. I found it helpful.The latest fad in churches is *Membership Covenants* and getting people to sign them, which people are convinced they must do. In fact, these documents exercise inappropriate, authoritarian control over Christians' lives by pastors/elders, are unbiblical, and do not respect individual conscience. They are one of many tools used to abuse the flock. I watched excommunications and shunnings at my former church for the slightest dissent: a godly doctor (married to his wife for 45+) years was excommunicated and 200 people were ordered to never speak to him again because he had disagreed in private with the pastors/elders. It was sickening. Then a lovely married wife/professional woman was subjected to same because she wanted to leave the church and was troubled by its abuses. Then another woman was excommunicated for standing up to protect children from a known sex offender in the church. This book explains so much.
This is the second review I've been able to write because we have downloaded it on so many devices that we had to buy a second kindle version! We have benefited from the explanations of how abusive leaders misuse certain scriptures, how people influence the thoughts and actions of others, and why it is easy to stay under those influences. It is helpful for us to be able to label certain techniques (i.e. mind blocks), realize how they were used on us, and can identify them in action.
This book describes in good detail how spiritual abuse can happen and how some people get out of it.The interesting thing about spiritual abuse as described in the book, is that it doesn't only occur in religiouscults, but can occur almost anywhere religious people meet if the environment is right.I was impressed with the description of how people who abuse others spiritually often change the meaning ofcommon words in order to influence the minds of their subjects. This book will help you if you are confused & hurting!This was one of the first books I read after exiting a controlling bible cult that put into words, the mind games that I knew existed...but wasn't able to put my finger on or verbalize. From the first Chapter "The Discipleship Game" to the last I was mesmerized.The author, Mary Alice Chrnalogar had been a member of a controlling church group, so she really understands because she has experienced spiritual abuse herself.While reading the book, I would insert the word "pastor" for "leaders", doing this just helped me process the information, as the group I escaped had only 1 leader & he was called "pastor".She has check lists at the end of the chapters that really helped me, because I could visually see that "WOW!" at the end of the "Authority Unlimited" chapter, I checked 10 out of 11 that applied to the church/cult that I had been in! It was empowering & validating to see the proof right in front of me. Of course the proof was in my experiences in the abusive group, but her book helped me to honestly SEE & make sense out of what took place.Here's a quote from the book"Chapter 8: Vicious Information Control - Page 139..."...TRICKS TO KEEP YOU CONTROLLEDLeaders get you to believe that they don't interpret the bible, but just "teach what is in the bible" - making the bible synonymous with THEIR interpretation!Leaders teach you to think that, if you want to be truly committed to Jesus, you must believe every word THEY teach about the bible.Leaders prompt you to think that you are probably committing sins of pride or rebelliousness if you don't believe every word of the bible as THEY interpret it for you.....These are some of the ingredients for controlling...."At the end of the book there is an Appendix, called, "A Summary of Abuses" this list was extremely helpful too."Twisted Scriptures" allowed me to see that I was manipulated & yes, I was a victim of an abusive, controlling religious group. It helped me to understand & make sense of what I experienced.While reading her book I had many, many "Wow!" moments.I highly recommend this book to anyone who has family in a controlling group or cultic church. This book would be helpful to anyone who wants to understand the mind manipulations that happen to folks who are in cults. I didn't think I was joining a "cult"...I thought I was joining a "true church". Over time the atmosphere became oppressive & hurtful. I searched to make sense of what I had experienced & this book helped me tremendously! We found ourselves in an abusive ministry structure and found this book to explain everything that was happening and why my heat was so unsettled. A must read for every adult male and female in the days that we are living in. It really lays out what the abusive authorities are doing and how they manipulate. This book is geared towards people that are not feeling great within their churches but feel the inflicted guilt of leaving such groups either by social pressure, inflicted guilt, brain washing , intimidation, or fears of social rejection or intimidation by such groups. the book was written by someone that had such experiences and she does a good job at getting people to a place of well being without having to adopt all the myths that some churches impose on their groups.
Chrnalogar's volume is addressed to those who might be in an abusive pastoral or ecclesial relationship. Her tone is direct but polite. The references are clear and well annotated. The research is very well documented. For a volume designed to assist people in a troubled relationship, this work also meets high academic standards. A great addition to any pastor's shelf regardless of denomination.Other reviews note that Chrnalogar is a Roman Catholic. It was clear to me that she was from the way she presented some of her thoughts and ideas. Don't let her denominational affiliation stop you from reading her work. This is first-class scholarship.

I bought the book because the author claims to be an authority on the science of sourdough, its digestibility and nutritional benefits. The book is informative, but...On page 203, it states “Extensive research was completed to write this book, however, there is not room to list the hundreds of studies used. For those interested, all source material and references listed are linked to the original studies at sourdough.co.uk.â€The text DOES NOT include a list of references, which would have only added a few more pages and would have gone a long way towards legitimizing its claims, allowing readers to look up the references to evaluate the studies for themselves. Furthermore, the information IS NOT on the author’s website as the book promises, UNLESS it is behind a paywall only available to people who have further subscribed to one of her classes. This is not acceptable. If I were the publisher (Kyle Books), I wouldn’t allow an author to do this.I am not just disappointed, I am pissed. And I wouldn’t have written this negative review had the author addressed my concerns on social media.
I've been trying to learn to make sourdough bread on my own for a while. Read a number of books including The Bread Baker's Apprentice and Artisan Sourdough Made Simple. There's nothing simple about sourdough, and I fully understand this is a discipline that takes many tries (and many failures) in order to really understand what's happening let alone get a loaf of bread that will make all the time (and flour!) worth it.I've also been following The Sourdough School on instagram for some time. I like Vanessa Kimbell's personality. But I think she should have hired a good editor as well as a great number of test-reader/bakers (who've never attended her class or follow her online) to do her recipes from the beginning. It is patently clear she did neither of these.As has been said before, there are grammatical (and technical) errors that make following incredibly difficult. There is page flipping back and forth multiple times within a single process to double and triple check you know what she's talking about--and even then you're never really certain. Terminology is inadequately defined, and steps are unclear.I imagine this is likely a helpful handbook if you've attended one of Vanessa Kimbell's workshops in person, with the ability to ask questions in real-time for clarification. Otherwise, this is not a book for a sourdough beginner. And I do hope a second edition is forthcoming after feedback from all these would-be-bakers who are thoroughly confused, like myself, even after baking her "basic" recipe more than 5 times.
Beautiful book , complicated recipes with too much back and forth following recipes. Returned. For the author, spend less time on fancy photos and more time writing recipes that follow more easily. Encourage you to have people try to follow your recipes using just your book, not easy.
We’ve used this book on an iPad with the Kindle app extensively these past months and are delighted with it. The pictures are lovely and helpful. I just received the hard copy today and am eager to pass it on to my grandson who is a sourdough baking enthusiast as am I. The book clearly explains why sourdough breads (without added yeast) have added immeasurably to my wellbeing. It is indeed gut-friendly! Note to Americans: get a small scale that weighs grams. Thank you Vanessa Kimbell! Wish I could attend your Sourdough School in the UK.

I have been baking sourdough for 2 years and have been so intrigued by the science that Vanessa Kimball brings to this subject. Finally, I have a way to explain to friends and loved ones the health benefits of eating sourdough bread. Many people have an aversion to eating bread, or treat it as a guilty pleasure, it does not have to be this way. But, much bread sold in America should not be consumed and very likely, harms your gut. What an amazing price as well. I don't know if I would start with this book, if you were just beginning, simply because so many factors go into making good bread. It can daunt a beginner. If you are a beginner, try Ken Forkish's book instead, otherwise jump right in!!!
This book is gorgeous, well written and informative to boot. A must have resource for anyone mildly into baking and sourdough.

I am new to programming. I somehow missed picking up any language as an undergraduate and by the time I became a graduate student in physics I knew I needed to pick one up fast. I've tried many books but I just can't get through them. I usually don't make it past the 2nd chapter. There are many reasons for this but mostly the authors do not have enough examples and they tend to go off on tangents that detract from the lesson at hand. Recently I began a research project that used a ton of Fortran 90 legacy code and so I decided that I needed to try again. I got this book about a week ago and I am finishing chapter 5 at the moment. This book is great for learning how to program. It cuts right to the meat and gives well explained examples and quizzes throughout the book. I worked the examples and quizzes and a few problems from the end of the chapter after reading through it. If you are looking for a reference this probably isn't it. If, however, you are a beginner like me looking to learn how to program in Fortran 90/95 this is your book.
I have been using this text to learn Fortran 90/95. I have used Matlab significantly and understand very minimal C++. I find this book very useful and informative. It outlines programing pitfalls and tips for good programming practices. The examples are very easy to follow and the index is very usable. I would say this is a good book if you are just learning Fortran. Another thing I like about it is the fact that it has a chapter discussing older Fortran practices and the new/ modified commands. I have been using that section a lot to update an old Fortran 77 program I have. Overall it was well worth the $60 or so that I paid. There may be other references that are available online for free, but I like that I can highlight and write in a text, so I prefer printed material to online material.
I am currently enrolled in a course called high performance computing and this was the recommended text. I basically do not anything about computers let alone programming itself. This course was a 3rd yr maths subject. I found this book really easy to read, I could pick up the concepts and logic behind it all pretty easily and be right into the discussion within seconds. Lots of examples and test cases with concepts explained pretty clearly, even questions that you are likely to ask are all answered. If you never learnt to program, or new to fortran, this is the THE book to read. I pretty much just read this book and teach myself, I find it alot more use of my time than going lectures when I can just read fortran in my time. just for the record, look up fortan in wikipedia, this text is the first reference.
This book is great for the Fortran beginner to the frequent user looking for a nice reference guide. It teaches the basics without overwhelming with details, and then divulges into advanced detailed concepts in later chapters. In this way, it is as good an introduction as it is a reference guide.The real benefit of this text is in its numerous examples, all relevant especially to the scientists. For every concept, there is an example of its usage. Examples even show pros or cons of ways in which one can write his code, leading to discussions on programming efficiency.All in all, a great text.

I got this book to help expand on my knowledge of programming for school. I went in knowing C++, so this book was more than helpful. I could see it being of great use for a first time programmer too.
This is an easy to read text with great examples for Scientists and Engineers. Never thought I would find a book on computer programming that held my attention. Read straight through it. Nice tips and boxes to alert you to new features.
I have written and maintained a lot of Fortran 77 code and a small amount of Fortran 90 code, so I was looking for a book that would include the changes in the language in Fortran 90, 95 and 2003, what they were for and how to use them. This book does a very good job of that.
