The War Journal of Major Damon

A Veterans Day treasure, the true, first-person account of a captured World War II soldiers incredible escape and courageous journey home, discovered after more than fifty years. Of all the heroic stories to come out of World War II, few are so extraordinary as that of Major Rocky Gause, who was captured by the Japanese, escaped from the infamous Bataan Death March, and, with a fellow soldier, endured a harrowing voyage across the enemy-held Pacific in a leaky, hand-crafted boat. In the battered notebook he kept throughout his journey and later converted to a thrilling narrative, Gause traced his steps from the besieged city of Manila on New Years Eve, 1941, to his safe landing on the Australian coast ten months later.

A friend told me about this book so I ordered a copy. As a WWII history buff, I'm amazed that I've never heard of this amazing story. It's like "the Incredible Journey," staged in WWII. The book is well written and very interesting. My only complaint is that I wish the author had elaborated a bit more on what became of the other major characters in the story. particularly Lloyd Osborne and Rita Garcia.

This is an incredible story of Rocky Gause's escape from Bataan and Corregidor to Australia. It is an awe inspiring story of a man's will to be free and safe and all he is willing to risk to achieve that. It is a real good read and what makes it better is that it was written during the war before his death in a flying accident. I always like books written "real time" and to see how people thought during the times they went through and what their mindset was. Great read and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a great adventure story. Only thing the book lacks is what happened to all the people that helped him during his journey.

Major Damon "Rocky" Gause is one of those members of the Greatest Generation that Tom Brokaw has written about. He did two hitches, one in the U.S.Coast Guard and one in the army airforce, as an enlisted man. He learned to be a pilot (as a civilian) and when WWII broke out he was commissioned as a pilot. He did very little flying before the war and was sent to the Philippines . His airplane never arrived, so Rocky became a foot soldier on Battan and Corregidore. He was capatured, and escaped. Then he and other army officer got a sailboat which they used to get them from the Philippines to Australia in 55 days. Their journey was filled with all kinds of encounters. After arriving in Australia they were decorated by Gen. McArthur. Rocky was sent back to the USA, and told no more flying. He persisted, and went to England to prepare for the Allied invasion of Europe. Unfortunately he died in a plane crash in England. During his flight from the Philippines he kept a diary, which in later years was found by his son who got this fascinating book published. It's a must reading.

Lieutenant (at the time) Gause really escaped over and over, repeatedly. It's an amazing, dramatic, hold-your-breath page turning story. The Army and War Department made a mistake in sending him on War Bond PR duty, for very long. He should have been put in charge of training of all special forces, rangers, and even replacement troops for the Pacific War, on "how to escape" and "how to survive" and "critical thinking when all chips are down and against you."I doubt that many people alive today could even survive his long boat ordeal on the open seas, to Australia.Hats off, Rocky! And, like the man said (in the Forward), so glad that you were on OUR side!

Good book told in his own words. Great "survival" story. Father saw program on PBS and wanted the book. I bought each of us a copy and both enjoyed it.

Major Damon Gause managed to escape from Japanese forces in the Philippines twice and braved many types of hardships. These hardships include the jungle, the ocean and several islands. It's tragic that he was killed later in the war. This is one of the best escape and survival stories of World War II. Against all odds this pilot got out of the horrible and deadly Battaan situation and to safety in Australia. The harrowing tale has many twists and turns, and held me in suspense the whole time even though the ending.

This is a tremendous book about the escape of an American from Japanese held Philipines. Major Rocky Gause and another American escape in a small boat and travel thousands of miles in Japanese held waters all the way to Australia. Their trials and tribulations are all in the book. Once you start reading it you can't put it down. You don't have to be a war buff to enjoy this book. It's almost unbelievable what they did. Pleas read the book, you won't regret it.

In The Reformed Doctrine of Predestination, Loraine Boettner gives a clear, thorough, accessible description of the subject doctrine (including, importantly, what it is _not_), including Biblical grounds for the doctrine, and Biblical responses to many common objections to it. Boettner further discusses some of the implications and practical ramifications of the doctrine, and the place it has played in history. I can't really address whether the treatment is persuasive, as I was in general agreement with the doctrine before I read this book. His interpretation of the doctrine includes some positions that, while certainly consistent with other treatments of Calvinist doctrine that I've read, haven't been expressed as part of that doctrine (specifically, that the number of the elect is far greater than the number of the non-elect, and that infants who die will all be saved).I note that, although the copyright date is 1932, the book has clearly seen some revision since that date, as it contains references to events from the 1950s and 1960s. The date of revision is not indicated on the copyright page.My only complaint with the book is the poor print quality. Five stars for the content, minus one for the print quality.

Excellent book. Very informative on Calvin's theology. Calvin gets a bad rap regarding Servetus. He wasn't a citizen of Geneva till 1559, way after Servetus was burnt. Calvin had no political power and couldn't change the mode of execution.

This is a great overview of Calvinism. He thoroughly covers the 5 points, answers common objections, and uses scriptures galore to support these doctrines. He also gives a history on John Calvin, and the effect Calvinism has had on places where it was believed.Overall great book. It will probably serve as a reference for me later on.

This is an excellent book and Loraine Boettner has done the Reformed Faith proud as he always does. I do not believe in election the way Calvinists do, but that did not stop me from reading and liking his book. I think all Presbyterians and Lutherans and some Calvinistic Baptists would be reinforced in their faith by reading this book. It didn't change my view in the slightest, of course.

Some people avoid labels for their beliefs and this includes Christians. They will particularly avoid labels for various understandings of Christian theology. But without labels, every time you want to explain your theological framework you need to launch into a lengthy discussion. But if you use terms (e.g. orthodox, liberal, reformed and evangelical) much can be conveyed immediately. The Reformed label for a particular understanding of Christian theology has seen a resurgence in recent decades. But exactly what is Reformed theology? Basically it is the understanding that God is sovereign in the salvation of man (i.e. every Christian was predestined to be a Christian long before they lived). And it is called Reformed because it was a key teaching of the Reformation. Of course the Reformers taught much more than predestination, but believing in God's complete sovereignty in salvation is essential if one wishes to call themselves Reformed. So what is entailed in the Reformed doctrine of predestination? Boettner's book is an old but helpful defense of the Reformed doctrine of Predestination. Initially in the book Boettner asserts key doctrines concerning God's planning, sovereignty, providence and foreknowledge. Then he moves on to teach the five points of Calvinism:(i) Total inability/depravity;(ii) Unconditional election;(iii) Limited atonement;(iv) Efficacious/Irresistible grace;(v) Perseverance of the saints. Then Boettner answers common objections against Reformed doctrine:(i) it is fatalism;(ii) it is illogical;(iii) it makes God the author of sin;(iv) it discourages motivation to exertion;(v) it represents God as unjustly partial;(vi) it is unfavourable to good morality;(vii) it precedes a sincere offer of the gospel;(viii) it contradicts the universalistic Scripture passages.Next Boettner teaches about other relevant issues including the harmony of Reformed doctrine with science and Islam. The book then closes with a quick review of Calvinism in church history. My only problem with the book is that it briefly promotes post-millennial eschatology and seems to be ignorant of Reformed Baptists.Nevertheless, if you are trying to understand what exactly is Reformed theology, Boettner's book is an excellent and convincing treatment of the subject.
